J ohansson closed to the rear fender of Weisel and th e two p ulled away from Minert , who was now bein g ' p r essu red b y Ya ma ha -mo u n ted Marvin Olson a n d Mi ssi on Yam ah a -r ider Bob Ri chard. The battle for th e lead co nt inued as J oharisson stuck his front tir e · inside of Weisel time and tim e again on ly to be denied the lead slo t. Behind the lead pair, a battle was forming Ior the number th ree posi tion, as Minert was trying desperately to hol d off the charges of Olson. The next three slots were occupi ed by Richard, Jay Biery and Gene Powel. . Weisel and J ohansson carried th eir battle clear to the finish line wi th Weisel less than a half bi ke's length in front. O lson was next, having slipped by Minert lat e in th e race , and Richard rounded out the top five spots.' . In mo to two , Weisel again took the holesh ot and once again it was J ohansson and Minert hot o n hi s . heels. Weisel hel d onto th e lead for three laps befor e J ohansson, after waiting and watching, made his bid for the lead. It was now Weisel doing the chasing with Mi nert, Olson, and Ri chard in fro nt of a large pack of riders. Late in the rno to, Weisel dropped back into the chase pack and O lson closed to almost challenging distance as the moto came to an end. Johansson took the win and over all with Olson's 3-2 overall finish good for seco nd. In Vet Expert action, Ala n O lson put ' his Pro Circuit' Kawasaki into the limelight wi th a pair of come from beh in d win s. H onda pilo t Kurt Goldie follow ed the KX rider to the checkered flag in each mo to with Greg Berg to th ird in mo to one, a nd fourth in m oto two. Berg recently tu rned expert less than a month ago and has been running con sistently in front of the class holding off Pete Vetrano, Terry-Ca ble's Terry Davis and a large group of o ther ri ders today. Vet Intermediate rider Mark H oward, rod e to an overall victory by winning moto two after a third pl ace showing in moto one. Riding an Open class Honda , Tony Feldhaus went 2-4 for second overa ll wh ile Whi te Bro s. rider Mark Granberg put hi s Honda CR250 into third overall with a 5-2 outing. Deatherage OXNARD , CA, JUNE 5 First Ch oice Racing's David Trauter was the man to beat in th e highly co m p eti ti ve Middlew eigh t 50cc Expert Stock class agains t a hardchargi ng Steve George at the SREpromoted Min i road races at Oxnard; Trauter topped the field for the overall win by tak ing command early in both his .heat s and never rel inq uis hing the l ead . George was not only tryi ng to keep pressure on Trau ter bu t also kept busy as o ther riders were trying to make a move on his position. Yamaha rider Joel Randel put together a 4-3 tally to land third overall. . In Middleweight 50cc Novi ce Modi fied racing Peter Yurfest waged war with Car l Essl, who captured second in the first heat, and J ua n Gonzales, who coll ected second place in the second heat. 'By way of th e second heat scores the overall win ner was Yurfest, Go nzales was second . and Essl third overa ll. Houston hammers Gold Country Spdwy By R.C .Jones AUB URN, CA, JUNE 3 J ohn H ouston Jr. blasted to victo ry for the second week in a ro w aboard his Fashion a nd H air/Coca Col a/ Trick/ Bell / Co dy Racing-prepared J awa in the H andicap main event and Mik e Delacy roa red to hi s first Scratch main win at Gold Country Speedway. . Shaw n Rep pert too k the ear ly lead as the H andica p main unfolded. Bob Hicks and Houston were fighting for second and both riders wanted to use th e o u tside line. As H icks an d H ouston banged wheels out of turn two, Hicks dropped back and H ouston went aft er Reppert. Houston moved pa st Reppert through turn four and took th e lead as the white flag came o u t. Wh en H ouston came o ut of turn four for the checkered he grabbed too m uch traction, sending him wildly down the track and towards the waIL H ou ston stayed on th e gas for the win and sla m med into th e wa ll just over the start-finish line. Reppert and Rob inson raced dow n th e main stra igh t with Reppert able to hold off Robinson for seco nd, Del acy, aboard the Aria / Ca li f P lumbing/M icro Mach Godden/ H &S Cycles-sponsored Godden , shot o u t of ga te one an d held the in side rai l th rough the fir st lap. Ji m Sisem ore moved into secon d but was relegated to th e o u tside line by Delacy. Rocky Robins on, sq ueezed ou t of the battle for the lead in the first turn, worked past H ouston for th ird and went after Sisemore. On th e n ext la p R o b in so n , with a brilliant move, slipped pa st Sisemore into seco nd and starte d pressing Delacy. Delacy was enjoying his lead for the next two laps and all Robinso n co u ld do was to knock o n Delacy's back door before Delacy closed the gat e. In the firs t moto Craig Smith got the early drop on the ga le to lead Longergan, Skip Early, Steve T rujillo and Rodn ey Os ma n around th e first tu rn .
