Edwards stomps Sunrise Old Timers MX ' By Sam English ADELANTO, CA, J UNE 5 Suzuki-mounted David Edwards of th e Los Angeles Old Timers MX Club swept through both motos to lock up th e o vera ll win in the Am ateur class a t Sunrise Cycle Park. Edwards d idn't get th e holesh ot in th e fir st moto but did tak e charge on th e th ird lap to run off a nd leave the rest of th e pack to fight for second place. Robert Jones, Jim Hollon, Kurt Sofka, Sam En glish a nd Curt Kentzman enjoyed what proved to be som e of the closest and fastest racing so far this year. The first rnoto fin ish ha~ it Edwards, J ones, English , Heintzman and Sofka. The second mo to also belonged to Edwards as he went to a wire-to-wire win, but no runaway thi s mo to as he was pressed by H eintzman who finished second for the moto and third o vera ll. At th e flag it wa s Edwards, H eintzman, J ones, H ollon and English. Expert ac tion' was 'also a thriller as Steve Dunlop ~ot th e holesh ot a nd started lapping n ders long before th e end of th e moto. With Dunlop's easy win he was moved up to th e Mas ter 's class for a trial moto and proceeded to claim third in that class. In th e first moto acti on th e battle for second place was between AJ Smith, Hal Grady and Tom Widick. Good solid racing for 12 laps and a real clos e finish had it Dunlop, Sm ith, Widick, Gra dy, and Moeller. At the start of the second rnoto Gary Willison jumped out and never looked back unti l th e finish. By Scott Daloisio' GARDEN A, CA, J UNE 2 Schwartz, who guided hi s Budwei ser/C. T .!. Brace/STP / K&N / Cirell o Racing Weslake to victories in heat a nd sem i, had th e lead wh en a red flag sto pped th e proceedings for Gary Hicks and Steve Lucero when they went down o n lap two. Everybody res tarted a n d H icks narro wl y edged Sch wartz to the first turn. T he teenage rider held the poi nt until th e back ch ute wh en vetera n Sch wartz slipped by o n th e ou tside. Just behind th e lead du o were Lucero and Eddie Castro and they were engaged in a heated battle for thi rd. That all came to a n en d wh en Cas tro sho t to the in sid e and, in o ne spectacu lar move, go t past Lucero a nd the restarted Hi cks. T he dim in uti ve Castro se t h is sigh ts on the lead er , but Schwartz was not to be denied. Hicks waited back at seco nd a nd he pulled alo ngSIde Castro as th ey took th e whi te flag , but Castro slammed th e throttle open a nd fought off the challe nge. Schwartz won, chased by Castro, HI cks a nd Lucero. Bernie Tusko , who has com pe ted off a nd o n since 1985, has apparently fo u nd himself a top-notch ride. Getting a sho t a t the Division One riders failed to scare Tusko. H e got by Bill y Gray before th e end of th e open ing circuit of th e H andicap main and never looked back. While Tusko was racing away on the KEZY/ Pro Design Jawa, the lo ng yardage riders were looking for a clear path to th e front of the field . Gray was in second, but Trinon Cir ello, Sco tt y Brown a nd Sco tt Brant were set to mak e a charge. Brant 'd ro p ped from the hunt before th e halfwa y point wi th a broken machine. Cirello and Brown advanced past Gray on lap seven but it was far too late for them to hav e any cha nce of catching the streaking Tusko. . Gray's woes continued wh en he fell in turn four just before the white Ilag.Tusko had no problems on the final revolution and he scored an easy win. Cirello had another impressive outing and took seco nd with Brown third on a brand new Jawa. . Impressive-looking rookie Kevin Jordan was promoted to Divis ion Two for th e night and made the Ham!" goes i,:!side of Kelly Inman during act ion at Speedway USA Vi ctorvIlle. Hamill won the Scrat ch and Han di cap mains. Hamill hammers Speedway USA By Scott Da loisio i VICTORVILLE, CA, J UN E 4 Bil ly Hamill had a tough night a t Speedway USA. H e sta rted th e evening off wi th a crash in a heat race and he ended the evening with a cras h, but sa ndwic hed in between were wi ns in both the H andicap and Scra tch main even ts. . Wh en H amill brought his Speedwa y U SA/ Va nce & Hin es/STP / Monrovia Diesel/Quak er Stat e Weslak e to th e line for th e Scratch main, he had never cap tured a Scratch main in hi s career. Referee Dennis De'Tem ple released j he starting ga te and Hamill blazed into th e lead inch es ahead of Bobby Schwartz and Steve Lucero, Lucero passed Schwartz off tu rn two bu t Schwartz took it back when th ey reached turn three. Lucero caugh t up to Sch wartz a nd they were dead even a t the end of th e fir st circuit, in turn two o n lap th ree. Tha t let Sch wartz by wi th Brad Oxley also taking adva ntage of th e miscu e. Hamill wa s oblivious to all of the passing behind him and won his firs t-ever Scratch main by a com fortable margin over Schwartz, Oxley a nd Lucero . Things were a little tougher o n Hamill in th e Handicap main as he had to co me from th e 40-yard line. Kell y Inman, Kelcey Gordon a nd Greg H ancock were th e initial pa ce setters but th e H amill steamroller was running down th e pack. Mik e Maz zacane replaced Hancock in third o n the first circu it. Inman went down in turn two on the second lap and that gave Gordon the lead. Hamill found his way to third on th e se cond lap. Lap-after-lap Hamill leaned on second-pla c~ Mazzacane, who refused to budge. Mazzacane held Hamill at bay until the fifth lap when he slid off th e groove. Hamill got by Mazzacane and a lap-and-a-half later he took th e lead when Gordon spun out in turn one. Hamill led the remainder of th e way for the win ahead of Schwartz a nd Oxley. Shumate shines at Ponca City MX By Jenny Balles PONCA CITY, OK , JUNE 5 Brett Shumate ra n away wi th th e 250cc Expert overall a t Ponca City. First moto action saw Steve Bayles fir st off the line with Clint :Tones a nd Shumate close beh ind all aboard .Hondas. J ones soo n motored past Ba yles and into th e lead . Bu t it didn't tak e long before Sh u ma te passed th em both in mid-ai r, o ver a j u mp, th rus ti ng himself into th e le ad posi tio n. As Jones a nd Bayles battled for seco nd, ' Yamaha rider l Whisperi n Sm ith came from behind and managed to get past both riders, putting himself in second positi on. By th e third lap of th e IO-lap race, Shumate was beyond striking distance with Smith in a comfortabl e sec o n d , followed by Bayles. Positions stayed th e sa me until th e chec kered. T he secon d moto was just as exc i ting with J ones stealing th e hol esh ot followed closel y by Shuma te, Cagiva-mounted Robbie Clauss, a nd Bayles. J ones' lead was -shortlived as Shumate, o nce again, flew Into th e lead over a jump, leaving J ones in seco n d and Clauss following. By the second lap, Bayles had passed Clauss and began pressuring J ones for second position. As Shumate stretched his lead, Bayles motored past Jones and int o second pl ace. A determined Smith regained co n tro l after a fir st-lap accident and started gas sing his way through the pack. He quickly moved up a position at a time, until he was in a comfortable third place.
