Rick Simmett (23) won the 125 and 250cc Pro classes on Saturday but didn't do as well the next day. Here he battles with Phil Larson. Ryan Huffman (208) and Jason McCormick battled in the 80cc Intermediate class and split w ins in the two events. Simmett, Hart, Graves top Pac-West MX openers By Brian Barnes ALBANY, OR, J UNE 4-5 A trio of H on da riders scored Pro class wins at the first and second rounds of the Continental Motosport Club-spo n so red Pac-West Motocross Tour. Rick Simmett took both th e 125 and 250cc classes on Saturday, while Grayson H art and Tony Graves took th e 125 and 250cc classes, respecti vel y, o n Su nday . In an unpreced ented move by promoters Ralph Huffman and Bob Leach , a long with CMC P resident Stu Peters, 270 riders mad e a gO-mile journey south Saturday morning to escape the rain-soaked hilI s o f th e Wash ougal Mot ocross Park. Leach 's Alba ny Su pe rcross Park was the destination. Saturday 32 The first mot o o f th e da y featured the 125cc Pro s and Hillsb o ro H onda /M S Racing/PBI-sponsored Hart took a wire-to-wire wi n. T ed Holt folIowed H art off th e sta rt and sta yed in second for five laps until Simmett blasted b y. Am erican Honda /Hondalin e / P J l /Oakl eybacked Simmett tried to catch Hart for the remainder of the moto but came up just short to take second. Lance Sm ail. Scott Steffy and Holt were third. fourth and fifth. The second moto was Sirnrneu's alI th e way as he set a blistering pace. Simmett took a convincing win with Smail looking impressive for second in the rnoto and second overall. Hart and Steffy took third and fourth. In the 250cc Pro class Answer Racing-rider Scott T yler holeshot moto one with Simmett, P hil Larson, Gary Beyer and Hart folIowing behind. Tyler loo ked strong running out front for a few laps. but on lap four it was evident Simmett was on the gas. Simmett stalked his prey for the next couple of la ps and then made a quick pass to take over the lead. Beyer was also looking great as he got past Larson to take third. Beyer chased both Simmett and Tyler until lap seven when both Larson a nd Hart got by, b ut Simmett was by then long gone to tak e the win. Ty ler 's performance ea rned him seco nd with Hart ove rta king Phil for th ird o n the last lap. Beyer and Steffy were firth a nd si xt h. T he seco nd mo to again rou nd T yler taking the lead on the holeshot WIth Phil a nd Mike La rson, Sim me tt a nd Steffy in tow. T yler led Phil [or th e first two laps u n ti l Sim me tt passed Larson on lap three a nd th en tried to do the same o n Ty ler. Both riders ended up o n the grou nd with Phil getting by to lead th e next cou p le laps while Sim me tt a nd T yler go t ba ck goi ng. Sim mett soo n regained speed and sped by Phil to take over th e lead o n la p five to continue o n to the wi n. P hil , Mike . and T yler th en p ut on a grea t show to th e finish as Mike passed Phil to take second on th e last lap. Tyler a nd Beyer rounded out th e top five. The 125cc Intermediat es put on a gr ea t show with Todd Schini putting together two excellent rides [or fir st o verall. Behind him both Brett DeVries arid Scott Hickson dueled [or the next two spots with DeVri es taking the measure o f Hickson for the second spot. Matt- Worbes, Jason Norton and Paul Rowland filled the top six. _ The 250cc Intermedia tes met up with tough competition in the form of Jari Heinonen. Heinonen new to both wins and the overalI but th e rest of the field was up [or grabs as riders had problems in either one or the other moto and couldn't put together consistent finishes. Mike Williams took second by virtue of his 7-3 performance while Jim Cottet took a 2-8 ride to th ird. Darren Po ulsen and Steve Sm ith rounded out the top five. Sunday A completely redesigned ' track greeted th e riders and Mike Larso n again outdistanced th e Open Pro cla ss on ' his Kawasaki over Mark Sp ooner, but in th e com bi ned moto with th e Intermediates it was Tony DeVries a nd Sco tt Will iams who pro vid ed the action. DeVries won th e first mot o after a race-long du el with Williams, but th e seco nd a nd deciding moto ga ve Williams th e overa ll af ter he ma de a gr eat pass o n DeVri es and made it sti ck to tak e th e win with his 2-1 score. The 250cc Pro class once again provided great raci ng and Hart was the man to beat in moto one as he took the hol eshot and never looked bac k to tak e th e win. Behind him G ra ves, Ty le r , Simmett and the Larso n broth ers wa ged a race- lo ng battle th at went down to th e wire. G ra ves looked stro ng in taking th e runner -up po sition, while T yler , Simm ett, Mike an d Phil Larson came acro ss th e fini sh lin e in a tight grou p [or third through sixth. T yler again found hi s way to the fro nt of th e pack as mot o number two got underwa y with th e La rso ns a nd G ra ves followin g. Mike La rson wo uld not be denied this wi n as aft er gelling away fro m T yler he sped to th e victory. Seco nd in th e mot o went 10 Roseb urg H onda/O 'Nea I/ProCi rcui t/ Maxima-sponsored Graves, but h is co nsistency paid off si nce he took the overall wi th hi s 2-2 score. Phil La rso n. T yler and Han followed the to p two home for third, fourth and fifth. In the 125cc Pr o class H art was the class of th e field, taki ng both victories a nd the overa ll to bo o t Graves tried d esperatel y to ca tch Hart in both motos, but ca me up sho rt a fter great rides. Mik e Bell put in two fourth place rides for third ov erall with Simmett and Smail fourth and fifth. The 250cc Junior class had some fin e rac ing action as Brittan Burlingame took the gold back to California after scoring a wi n and runnerup. Canada's John Harris wound up taking second overall via his 4-1 score with Brett Bierek and Dan Reynolds th ird and fourt h . . The fiOcc class round ni ne Kawasaki riders going at it for the o verall win. The to p three riders were the class of the field though as Stan Sloboda, Bill Bin ckl ey and Brett Boeh m scored first th rough third in both motos.
