Kin g , who would fin ish fif th, said, " T h e bi ke started to miss and fifth place was as far as I could go. " With five laps in th e 25-lap race, a num ber of things happened. G raha m passed Carr off the last turn only to be repassed a t th e entrance to turn one. The Peo ria crowd got what it paid for - good, close racing. With a lap an d a half to go . Adams ' cl u tch b r o k e and tied up th e transmission. Carr led the start o f th e las t lap and th en Carr and Graham closed o n T resser and O rr as they came down the h ill. Tresser, not wanting to lose h ard fought grou nd raced the leaders _ to th e flag. Tresser was la ter fined $50 for ignoring the bl u e n ag an d not pulling over to a llow th e leader s to p ass. Carr took the ch eckered nag wi th Graham right mrhis rear fender an d Tresser , w ho wo u ld h a ve been lapped, ri gh t th ere wi th the two front runners. . G raha m appeared satisfied wi th seco n d: " It's really h ard to ra ce o n a n arrow groove; yo u have to fig h t the bike and th e track. I'm h ap p y with th e ride." About th e Ch ar lie G ard ner H a rley 'h e rode, which is usuall y ridden by Steve Eklund, who is sidelined due to an inj u ry , G raham said, " I really lik e th e Knight frame. Steve (Eklu nd) an d I m ust be abou t the same size. We only had to ch ange the foo tpeg location an d a few other thin gs."
