SANFORD, NC , MAY 29 Steve McSwain and his Scott Goggles Honda 500 co ntin ued the ir domination of the North Carolina H are Scramble Seri es by taking his fourth overall win in five events at the Devi ls R id ge hare scra m bles . McSwain won on a hot and dusty day but not before 125cc rider Gregg Erwin applied some hea t of his own. T he 500 and 125cc class started together setting up a head-to-head shoot-out between the two riders. Erwin put in his best ride of the year giving McSwain all he wanted in the tight sections. Mc Swain pushed hard in the open sections and It p roved too m uch for Erwin and the Triangle Cycl es Honda 125. McSwain built a lead of abou t two minu tes by the gas stop and never look ed ba ck. Erwin went o n to destroy th e 125cc class with G ra y Leonard taking second on a Suzuki. Buren Hamick came back from an injury to take th e 250cc class win and regained a slim lead in th e series . Harry G reenlee go t a win in the Sen ior class aboard his Kawasaki 250 and tigh tened up the sta ndings in th at class also. Howard hammers at Bakersfield ST By Laura Tisinger BAKERSFIELD, CA, MAY 20 . Craig H oward p iloted his WoodRotax to the 600cc class win at Bakersfield Speedway in th e fourth ro und of th e BRA Points Seri es. After a restar t in th e 600cc hea t race, Gary Furravati wh eelied off the line to tak e th e lead in turn one. Fu rravanti was pursued by a hungry pack of riders who diced back and forth fo r positions: On th e third lap, Jim Rosa was running second and holding off Mike H ale as H o ward was look in g for a passing opportunity. On lap four H oward found th e o pportunity and moved into second, bu t then Hal e mustered everythi ng he had and blew by both H ow ard and Rosa co mi ng o u t of turn four to take over the runner-up spot for good beh ind winner Furravati. T he pros scra mbled at the start of th e main event as Honda-mounted Hale held th e lead over Furravati and Howard. Howard took over second behind Hale on la p two and on th e next lap he passed Hale for th e lead and pulled out a comfortable lead. Haynes, Heisler handle Hillbilly Hills MX closer By Gary Crider MACON, GA, MAY 15 Alabama racers Dan ny H aynes and Darr yl H eisler came away with doub le victories in their respective Mini a nd A divisions at H illbill y Hills MX in the final round of th e Georgi a-Alabama Spring MX Seri es. Over 200 entrants were on hand for th e Georgia Cycle Supply-sponsored event. Overall series awards, along w i th co n t in gencies from Scott, An swer, Oury and Silkolene, 'were pres ented a t the tra ck. H eisler topped both th e 125 and 250cc A classes after winni ng three out of four motos, Marti n rode all three A divisio ns but finished seco nd each tim e. H o wever, he won the 125 and 250cc A Series Champ ions h ip . J oe Rogers was series ru nner-u p in both classes. H aynes led the 65cc and Junior Min i points race fro m the open ing round of th e six-race series and he concl uded the series in style, win nin g all four motos. Identical twin s J ason a nd J am es G ri er fin ish ed second a nd third, respectively, in Junior Mini ac tio n and th ey finished the series with identical 232-point scores. Runner-up honors fell to J ason by virtue of h is better finish in today's fin al round. Du e to the unusually large number of ent ries in th e 250cc/10 pen A and Senio r (30+) cl a sses , ad d i tio nal classes were crea ted. The A class riders with 500cc machines go t th eir own class wh ile Senior riders over 38-years -old cou ld ride in a "Su per Senior" di vision. Florida's J on McCabe topped th e 500cc A division with hi s perfect score over Tom my Martin a nd Dar ryl Ahonen while Randy Tillery claimed th e Super Senior (38+) race over Charl ie Ow ens a nd Jimm y Pinson. Andre Pene matched wh eels with Johnny Dean in all four Senior and Super Min i motos, Pene held the edge each time out and won both classes. Pene won the Super Mini Championship Series by a threepoint margin over Dean. Coming into the event, Kevin Cozadd held a narrow lead over Brock Bullard in the 125cc C point race. But when 125cc C action got underway, Cozadd suffered a broken ankle in a massive first turn pileup. More than half of th e 34-rider field went down , so th e race was restart ed. Bullard emerged with a perfect score a nd th e serres win . Cozadd was unab le to ride and dro pped to third in th e fin al standi ngs beh ind Chris Denn y and finis hed six th overa ll for the day.
