Ni elsen 's fading brakes which cost him th e Open class overall lead a nd day three's class win. Ni elsen lost hi s lead to Daniel, wh o held a six-point advantage over th e Kawasaki rider. Kawasaki 's Larr y' Roeseler and Pa u l Krause made their first appeara nce of th e Four-Day after competing in th e Baja 500, in wh ich th e Roeseler /Krause team fini shed second overall. Top overall rider on day three was again Kurt Hough (1659), followed by Halcomb ( 1677), Cunningham and Zierman ( 1678), H awkins ( 1689) and Roeseler ( 1699). The big talk on da y four was th e final sp ecial test. A bottl eneck formed o n a muddy hill for th e lat e number riders . The bottleneck caught many riders incl udin g H al comb, Daniel and Rudder. Because of th e bottleneck, Daniel lost hi s chance for a cla ss win, a nd H alcom b's bid for a to p fin ish was ruined. " I go t a fro nt flat before th e last ga s and 1 go t a tube from Palenske, but it turned o u t to be a rear tub e," said H alcomb. " I had th e tire off th e bike, so 1 had to pu t the tire back o n, tighten th e heck out of th e rim lock s, and ride it into the gas o n the fla t. 1 changed it just o u tside of the gas and went into the last special test.
