Mitch Boehm, . J im Bill in gsl ey, Brock R o berts, Laird Whit e and T im Quinn a lso made it to th e winner 's circle in the rain-shortened event. Gardner 's win came in th e 750cc Producti on race, which he led fro m flag -to- flag. R iding flaw lessly on 'a 1988 Suzu ki GSXR750 eq u ipped with a n Ontario exhaus t system and Avon GP tires, Gardner 's cons istent I:09 lap ti mes were too fast for a ny cha lle ngers. The 1987 U SBA Champion Goimarac took the early lead, his Cycles & Sleds-sponsored Hurricane showi n g i ts top en d su periori ty do wn the long front straight. Behind him, Bill ingsley's Quality MC Parts/ Barn es Bo ots/KBER Radi o sponsor ed FZ600 was battling it ou t for second with Boehm's FZR400, spo nsored by Motorcyclist maga zin e /P irell il K ush ita n iI Sh oei / Yamaha. By then, th e wind had . ki cked up a bruta l dust s torm , limiting visibility to as little as 25 feet. Billingsley finall y p as sed Boehm on the sixthIap and began to hunt Goimarac in th e dust. By lap nine, Billingsley had caugh t sigh t of G oimara c ' s lea thers glea m i ng th rough the dust ahead. " I co uldn' t even see the tra ck at times, a ll I could do was try to follow Go im arac's shiny leathers /and hope he kn ew which way th e track goes," Billingsley said. On the last la p, Bill ingsley went to th e o u tside In turn nine a nd got on the gas early, bea ting Goimarac across the lin e by a few feet. The 400 and 600cc Superbi ke races were the most eventfu l o f the da y. On th e ninth lap o f th e 400cc race, Boehm tri ed a last dit ch pass on the inside of leader Gardner in turn o ne. Gardner was alread y commi tted to h is line and th e two riders q uickly fou nd out th at th ey both cou ld n' t occ u py the same pl ace at the same tim e. The resulting co llisio n sent Gardner sliding o rr into the grass unhurt. Arnet aces Perris MX By David Procida PERRIS, CA, MAY 30 Su zu ki-mo u nted Ed Arnet used a 2I score to claim th e overa ll victory in th e 250cc Pro class a t Pro Circuit Racing 's Memorial Da y bash a t Perri s Racew ay. Not only were th e Pros racing for th e reg u la r purse, but a $100 bounty was o ffered for the first rid er to clear a new tabletop jump. In moto o ne Ron Turner holesh ot and led th e pack o u t onto the track. Turner swiftly guided his Yamaha through the bowl corner and made hi s bid for th e tabletop, bu t co uld not ~et th e height needed to clear it. Cagiva rider Mik e Young was close behind Turner with Eric Browne in hot pursuit. They were more than conc erned with each other than th e tabletop and failed to clear it a lso. For five laps no one wo uld claim th e $100 bounty. Then on lap six, Marc Peters went up and over, clearing th e jump with just inc hes to spa re. Meanwhil e, u p at th e fron t, Young had gone down a nd fell back to fifth behind Turner, Browne, Arn et a nd Peters. At th e halfway po int Arnet had moved ahead of Browne wit h Young doing th e same a few co rners later. Arnet reeled in Turner on lap six, a nd the two riders pulled away from Young. Amet pressed T urner but the seasoned vetera n held him of£. Turner took th e checkered flag on the nex t la p with Arnet, Young, Bro wne and Jim Ch amberlain fin ishing in th e top five positio ns. In mot o two Arnet powered a lo ng the o utside berm to take th e lead from T u rner with Browne "ho lding o ff Y oun ~ for third . Arnet would pull away III th e tight stuff, o nly to ha ve Turner reel him back in o n th e straigh ts. You ng kept the lead ers in sight as Bro wn e, holding o rr th e conti n uo us cha rge of T erry Fowler , fell to fourth. As th e mo to near ed the en d, T u rner and Young were tu cked in right behind Ar n et. Bro wne develo ped problem s a nd fell off th e pace with Fowler now in fourth : Arnet led a three-m an freight train head ing for th e finish line and took th e checkered flag for th e overall win. Turner 's 1-2 secured h im seco nd overa ll with Young next in line with a pa ir of thirds. Arnet returned to action in the Open Pro cla ss where he added two more rnoto wins to hi s total.
