WAPELLA, II., MAY 15 Reed Bertilino and th e Bertilino Produce Rotax led only two laps in any of the races he rod e but those two nabbed him the lion's share of th e 500cc class money at th e seaso n dirt .track opener of the Bloomington-Normal M.C. .at their Wapella Clubgrounds. . With the sky greying and th e first few drops of rain coming down th e 500s were ru shed to the line. H eat win ner Rick Knuth was on the pole and second-heat win ner Rick Anders was alongside. Knuth sho t off th e line into th e ear ly lead with Bertilino in hot pursuit. Bert ilino hugged Knuth 's rear w heel lap-aft er-lap, Wit h jus t two laps left Knu th commi tted h is o nly error with ' a sligh t loss of trac tio n in turn two and Bertil ino stuck it in and took the lead and was never headed. Knu th kept it close but sett led for second in front of And ers, Kevin Seivers and Rick Bur meister. . In the 50cc class heat winners Shannon Wright and Shane Garrisson lined up side-by-side and Wright got out in fron t quickly with Justin Filson, Randy Sm ith and Garri sson in tow. Wright held them off to ta ke the win and at the checkers Garrisson had nipped Filso n for the second spo t, moving Smi th to fourt h . Mike Hall fought off Sidney Ho lt for the fifth spot. The Seniors put on a good show for several laps with Les 'Eslinger, fig h ting off th e hard charges of Gary Brennan until Brennan went down on th e last lap,)etting Eslinger cr.uise home in front of Dave Stanfield, Brennan recovered in tim e to hold onto the third spo t in front of Greg Vogel and Greg Calley. . T he Suzuki speedster began race o ne in the dust of two H ondas ridden by Chris Trickle 'and Brad Sim cox . Titus quickl y found a wa y past Simcox , but catchin g th e streaking Trickle was tou gh er. T itus dogged T rickle, bu t th e Honda p ilot wouldn 't fold. At the finish line it was Trickle in first with Titus a close ' second, way ahead of the rest of the pa ck. Sim cox shot to th e front of th e pa ck to start race two with Titus tu cked in right behind him. Trickl e was in third and clos ing fast wh en he overshot a berm and crashed. Ti tus con tin ued to pr essure Sim cox, finall y p assing h im in th e back section of the track. Once in th e lead Titus shot o ut to a big lead. Satterfield grabs Ringgold SX wins By Joe Williams RINGGOLD, GA, MAY I4 Ken ny Satterfield co mbi ned a 1-3 score to take th e overall victory in the Enduro class at round five of the Supercr oss of Rin ggold Spring Series. In the first rnoto, Performance Cycle-sponsored, KTM rider Satterfield jumped out front of Terry Mitchell and Jack Davis. Satterfield soon started to pull away from the race for second between Mitchell and Davis and took the checkered flag with a huge lead over Davi s, who had passed Mitchell for second. Mitchell held on for third followed by Greg Lassister and Andy Locke. Satterfield jumped out into the lead in the second moto but it wasn't for long as he got bumped in the first turn and went down. Honda rider Greg Lassiter assumed the lead and started to pull away from secondplace rider T erry Mitchell. Lassiter took th e moto win foll owed by Mitchell. Satterfield charged from dead last up to third, whic h was good enough for the overall win. In th e firs t mo to of th e l25cc B class Free-Wheeling Honda rider Jason Grogan pulled the holeshot a hea d o f Will Scruggs, Adrian Dematteo and Keith Mill er. While Gr ogan cruised' around in ' the lead Suzuki rider Ray Boru ff was chargin g his way up through th e pack. Boru ff passed Miller for fourth as the whi te flag came o ut and soo n closed up gr ound o n Dem atteo and beat him to th e finish line by less than a foot. In th e second moto Miller took the lead ahea d of Scruggs, Dematteo, Boruff and Gro gan. Boruff went down and was unable to repeat his first moto charge. Grogan displaced Dematteo and was pressuring Scruggs for second. Scruggs put up a fierce fight but after about a lap Grogan slipped by and set out after Miller. Grogan soo n closed the gap and with abou t a lap and a half to go passed Miller for the lead. Miller held on for second ahead of Scruggs, Dematteo and Larry Bolden. Results P/w: 1. Smith LAWRENCEBURG, IN , MAY 20 Sam Lowe racked up the win in the 80cc class at Lawrenceburg Motorcycl e Speedway' s sea so n opener. Matt Auxier followed Lo we to the wire for a second pl ace fin ish while third went to Brad Hollander. Phillip Palmer started his season right with a victory in the 250cc class for h is long-t im e sponsor, Gene's H onda of H arrison. The real battle was for second as Patrick Behrie held off Mark Bastin at the wire wh en it co unted. In the Open B class Rob Collins took an early lead and held on to clinch th e win as he had his heat, Frank Humphries and Rob Craig fought for second with Craig claiming the honor. Mik e Butler was th e survivor when th e smoke cleared fro m the tightfought run for the flag in the Open A class. Several restarts were proof of the itch to get racing as jumping the line stretched th e field with heat winners mostly starting from a . penalty line.
