Buchli, Cook share Greeley SX wins By Larry Johnson GREEL EY, CO , MAY 14 The SRAC's first supercross of the seaso n kicked off tonigh t in Greeley wi th last year's Tim Bu chl i beating Stacey Cook in the 125cc Pro class ' only to have Cook return the favor by beating Buchli in the 250cc Pros. In the Open P ro class Dave Newell beat Kip Sandell, wh il e Shaw n Morgan beat Andy Atkins in the 80cc Experts. . Vickery Motor sports' Buchli led th e pack into tum one of the 250cc P ro main ahead of Faye Myers , H onda 's Cook, Jim Mitchell, Newe ll and Derek Brown . The Buchli-Cook duel began pulli ng away by m idmoto, th en Buchli drifted h igh .in a right-hand berm and Coo k went underneath for th e lead and eventual win over Buchl i an d Newell. Buch li also holesho t th e 125cc Pro main ahead of Scott Fu lcher and Gil Murray, while Coo k was back in seventh. By lap three Buch li was 'getting away from Murray, who had moved to second. O n lap six Keith Campbell had taken second wi th Cook pressuring from third. Cook fina lly reached second on the last lap, but Buch li ha d a solid lead. Buchli won four seconds ahead of Cook and Cam pbell. Vickery's 'Sa ndell kep t Golden Motorcycle Center 's Newell at bay throughout mo to one of the Open P ro class . Sandell, just back after a long layoff with a broken wrist, loo ked lik e he had never lost a step with th e win. Newell took th e lead early in ro u nd two , while Sandell was busy thre ading his way from fifth. Fincher flickers at Colefa MX By Toni Anthoni TAL LADEGA, AL, MAY 21 Wall ace " Flic ker" Fincher ma de his ret urn to th e 125cc clas s a successful o ne as he domi nat ed 125cc B class action at the supercross-style Coleta Valley MX. . Riding his firs t race since a serious crash 14 months ago, the Cycle World of Gasden-sponsored Fincher recovered-from a poor start in rno to one to overtake H ondamounted Brian Roberso n for the win. In moto two it was all Finc her as he powered his Kawasaki into the first turn an d pu lled away for the victory. . In the hi ghly-competitive 125cc cla ss it was a night-lon g battle with D ira c Ba rb ee top ping Ya mahamo un ted Richard Jayo. In mo to one Barbee motored h is H on da into the lead with J ayo and Paul Street close behind. By lap three Barbee had opened a comfortable lead only to overshoot a berm and allow Jayo to slip by. Jayo held the lead to the finish with Barbee trying unsuccessfull y to pa ss at every corner. In moto two Bar bee pulled a clean ho leshot with Jayo in tow. T hi s tim e it was no mistakes for Barbee as he cruised to th e win ahead of J ayo and Street. Kawasaki-mounted Dav id Hill too k th e overall win in th e closelyco nt ested 250cc C class. H ill took narrow victories over Murry Fai l and J eff Knee. In Junior Mini action Talladega Cycle/Maxima-sponsored Danny H aynes too k top ho nors. Rogers captures Vintage Crown RR By Jane Steele KENT, WA, MAY 22 Ward Rogers ra n away with th e first leg of the No rt hwest Vintage T riple Crown Series hel d at Seattle Internatio nal Ra cew a y, w hi le Terry Williams an d 'Steve Littlejo hn cap tured victories in the Yamaha Superbi ke contingency series. . The Triple Cro wn was combined with the Washingt on Mo torcycle R oadracing Associat ion 'S regular sched ule , and attracted riders fro m the Northwest and Canada on an array of vintage machi nery. The vintage bikes will compe te next in Portl and and British Columbia for the overall title. David Co ll ier wo n th e Open Vintage heat race on h is Galeosponsored Ducati, wi th War d Rogers a close second on his 1972 Kawa saki H 2750. In the 500cc Vintage class, Bill Brown jumped to an early lead on his BSA Goldstar, but was passed in the last lap by Tim Mare k, also BSA Goldstar-mounte d. In the main event, Rogers, spon sored by Pau lso n 's Suzuki, im medi ately grabbed the holeshot and went on to an uncontested victory. H e quickly outdistanced the entire field, turning lap times that would have been compe titive ag ainst th e mo dern mach inery running later that day. Co llier p ut in a good ride for"secon d place and Neil Docherty too k thi rd o n his Yamaha T D3. Rogers was later protested for having a modern box-section swingarm on his Kawasaki, but was allowed to retain first p lace. Marek and Brown o nce again battled for the lead in the 500cc Vintage mai n eve nt with Marek prevailing afte r a clo se battle. Swiss Niederberger, also BSA-mo unted, took third, with Dewey's Cycle Shop teammate Steve Gi blin in fourth . But after the race , the referee found tha t th e entire field, with the exceptio n of Giblin, had jumped the gun, so Giblin was credited wit h the win. . Giammanco grabs BaylandsST By Mike Vancil FREMONT, CA, MAY 13 Anthony G ia mma n co bl azed to victory in th e 500cc Pro class at the biweekly Baylands short track. The start of the final was a near br eakaw ay for fast starter Eric Larson and h is H onda four- stroke but by lap two he ma de an error coming out of turn two and let the pack behi nd him catc h up. At turn three on the second lap heat-winner Mark Corsetti was the new leader. While the battle for first was going on Ciammanco was working on improving hi s po or start. By lap five it was Giammanco p utting real pressure on Larson for third. After Giammanco got .by and headed for Corse tti it appeared tha t Larson calmed down and bega n to u se the same lines as Giammanco. T h e plan for both Giammanco and Larson worked, as they bo th passed Corsett i to earn first and second p lace, respectively. In the 80cc Junior/ Exp ert combin ed class there was only one Expert entered, Ben Bostrom on a H on da , and he started in th e second row in th e heat race and because he didn't win h e was given th e last start position in the final. H ad he no t won the final he would not have trophi ed but the task was just the 'kind that
