00 00 0') ...-; Husky-mounted John Haaker is chased by Ho nda rider Scott Summers. Summers was a top contender in the Fou r-Stroke class. Larry Roeseler changes his rear ecology t ire e n route to a third overall placing. He a lso took third in the MX special test. Haaker piloted h is Husqvarna to the big-bore Four-Stroke class win. Haaker edged out fellow Husky rider David Rhoades. With his third overall. Roeseler looks to be a sure bet to represent the United States in the 63rd ISDE to be held in France later this year. Sum mers and Missouri rider Greg Surdyke got the fu ll 1000. while second place overall Aaron Hough came through clean .on points for a " ro lling stop." Day two promised much less trai l with 125 miles compared with 170 mi les for day one. The schedules were much looser, with spare time of up to 15 minutes. Day two was also a Michigan District Enduro which was scored separately. Alan Randt on a KTM won for district points. In the 125cc class. Aaron Hough continued to dominate with outsta nding speed and form in the tests to lead second p lace by almost two minutes. with a total of 2307. Jeff Fredette moved up into second at 2432. with Neely in third at 2439. The hotly-contested 250cc class had Hawkins maintaining his position at 2296. Roeseler powered the KX to a tie with Kurt Hough for fast time in the second test to stay in second at 2303. H o ug h at 2321, coming back strong from the 60point deficit. Bertram at 2324 was fourth. Back in seventh Halcomb ' styled the motocross test with fast times in both. The O pen class had settled in with Irwin leading over Daniel and Krause. Smith continued to lead the small Four-Stroke ' class wi th a 63point advantage over Rudder. Only four riders finished the day in the Over · 500 Four-Stroke class, with Haaker leading Rhoades. Summers and Californian Mark Mangold on an Honda XR600. The promise of rain was only partially fulfilled with ligh t showers In the evening. Day three was to be the shortest. but would feature the most new trails. Two tou gh . tight terrain tests . combined with the morning motocross test and th e final motocross test ru n in groups of 10 would determine the final ou tcome. The Bentwheels Clu b - went with suggestions for running the final motos as is the practice at the ISDE. a nd announced that they would hold up the riders . in an impound area until the class leaders all came in and could be assemb led. T he day spelled trouble for many as final day gremlins knocked out some top contenders with DN Fs. Halcomb went out early with gearbox problems; Dan iels succumbed to ig nition failure along; Lambert suffered engine ills on his big YZ. A surprising DNF was the always finisher Drew Smith. who thought the bottom end on his XR had seen enough Six-Days mileage. Problems in the terrain tests with a big fifth gear cras h slowed Bertram. Aaron Ho ug h mistook spectators for the end of the secon d terrain test and lost time. As the first riders finished the course and came to the final motocross test, the club prepared the groups for their motos. The first race was the top 10 I25cc class riders from day two results. Getting the holeshot in this dead engine race was Jimmy Lewis on his Yamaha YZ125. Close behind was Aaron Hough and Cunningham. Hough passed Lewis on the second lap and stormed to an impressive win. Filling out the class was Fredette. Lewis, and Neely. T he 250cc class was the one that everyone was wa iting for. Getting the start was Pa lenske, but hot on his heels was the charging Kurt Hough. In a tight pack were Roeseler, Hawkins. Bertram and Kadlec. Team Green 's Mark J oh nson was hot as Palenske hel d up Kurt Hough with the others behind in the heavy dust. Suddenly Pa lenske bobbled in a turn, and Hough was gone. The dust was so bad that no real passing happened during the final two laps. The posi tio ns remained with Kurt Hough winning wit h the fastest time of 756 seconds. Palenske second at 779, Roeseler at 780, Hawkins at 784. Kadlec at 787, and Ber tram at 790. The Open class started wit h class . leader Irw in cras hing in the ' firs t tu rn . Kra use motored out front on the big KX whi le Irwin struggled wit h the dust to come back. Krause won with Nielsen second, whi le Irw in maintained well enough for the class win . The small Fo ur -Stroke class wou ld turn 'o ut to be the closest racing as Dwight Rudder and Brian Mull fought it ou t for the class win. Bill Fullmer Jr. styled to a nice win while the class was won by a determined Mul l. . The big four-strokes rumbled out for the start wi th Summers pressing Haaker and R h o ad s following closely. Summers forced his way by and won the moto. Haaker followed, seven seconds back. to win the class with over a two-minute margin over R hoades. who was having , some. coo lant useage problems all day. Kurt Hough had blistered the other tests and won the overall by a 31-second advan tage. H awkins was second. followed by Roeseler, Kurt 's little brother Aaron on a 125, a nd Bertram. Class winners were Aaron Hough on the 125. Kurt Hough on the 250. J eH Irwin on the 500 Honda, Brian · Mull on the XR250 and J ohn Haaker on the 510 Husky. • Results OVERALL: 1. Kurt Hough; 2.
