Ro bb ie Nee ley was second with a fast m o to cross test , bu t was slightly slo wer in th e u nfami liar woods of th e terrai n test. An im pressive J im m y L ewis, o n h is Yamaha, was th ird wi th Fredette fourt h. In the 250cc class, Hawki n s led R oe seler by 22 seconds with Suzuki 's Da ve Bert ra m th ird , back a noth er one second. In fou rt h wa s th e n ew face o f J oe Zeirman with very compe titi ve test times. ehi nd him was Kurt H ough, sadd led with 60 po ints from th e trai l, b u t roosting in th e specia l test, winning th ree o f th e fo u r. In fif th was H alco mb, who sh ow ed sty le a nd speed in th e motocross tests, but was slig htly off the pace of th e eastern woods riders in th e terrain tests . In the O p en class, J eff Irw in mo tored th e big H onda , th a t looked like it had a lready seen many motocross tra cks, around in good sha pe to lead th e class. Following were Kra u se, Da n iel s, Charlie Ko u ba , Du ke Lambert o n a YZ490, and Neilsen. Smith led th e 0 to 350 Four-Strok e class of all X Rs by 45 seco nds over Dwi gh t R udder, with Bria n Mull followi ng. H aa ker powered the test to lead th e ov er 500 Four-Stroke cl ass over R h oades a nd Summers. Ov erall tall ying showed H a wkins i n the lead wi th 1290 poi nts. After it wa s a ll sa id a nd done, th ey decid ed to penalize rid ers who did not sto p a t a ll 1000 po ints, while th ose that mad e th e effort to stop, but who did a ro lling stop got n o penalty.
