Hart, Graves hot atAlbanySX By Clay Light 28 AL BANY, OR, MAY 21 R o un d three o f the Motocross Nort hwes t-sa nctio ned North wes t Mo tocross Championship Series saw Grayson H art and T on y Gr aves net wins at Albany Supercross. H art held Graves off in both 125cc Pro motos for a I-I win while Gr aves took advantage of a cras h by Mik e La rso n in th e second 250cc Pro moto to card an overall win 'via 2-1 performances: La rso n , riding a Suzuki, launched into the lead at th e drop of th e gate in the first 250cc Pro co ntest with H art ru n ni ng second ahea d of Phil La rso n, Graves, Kawasaki-mounted G ary Beyer a nd Darren Rogers. Larson push ed hi s way into a co mfor table six-second lead by the second lap as Hart an d Gra ves waged a battle for second in whi ch Graves co ntroll ed after nabbing H art o n the th ird of 10 laps. Graves made up an incredible deficit to wh ittle Mik e La rson's lead to a second with th ree la ps re mai ni ng, but he co u ld n't make a pass. Hart held third all to him self while a battle for fourth between Beyer , Rogers, Don Bisceglia and Phil Larson went Beyer's way in th e later stages. Mik e Larson darted to the front of the pack at the start of the seco nd contest. Hart ran second with Graves running midpack. Graves 'q u ickly overtook several riders in one swoop and nabbed Hart to set his sights on Mike Larson. Larson appeared to be well on hi s way to a win, but he crashed and Graves was in th e right pl ace at the right tim e and earn ed the overall win via 2-1 performances aboa rd the White Brothers/Max im a/ O 'Neal -sponsored H onda. Larson (1-3), Hart (3-2), Rogers (5-4) and Biscegli a (7-5) rounded ou t th e top five. Hart and Graves' battle resumed at the drop of the gate in th e first 125cc Pro moto in which Hart held a slim advantage com ing out of the first tum. Graves did all he cou ld at tak ing the lead from H art but was doomed for the number two spot at th e co mp letio n foll ow ed by Eric Hall, Beyer and Ro ger s. Hart gated well in moto two and used it to hi s advantage by motori n g in to a huge lead in th e early stage s as Dana Anderson ran second and Beyer th ird. Graves 1';1 0 near last o n lap one, but picked off Kenny Ol sen , Rogers, Beyer, Biscegli a a nd fin all y Hall to set ou t after H ar t. G ra ves ma de up a lot of gro und a nd attempted to pass Hart, but came up short at the finish giv ing H art the win on the Hillsboro H onda/ Sm ith/PBI H on da over Graves' 2-2 s howi n~s . Jones AU BUR N, CA, MAY 20 Edd ie Ingels took th e Scratch mai n victory and Jim Sisemore won th e H andicap main at th e Gol d Coun try Speedway. John Payton won his first Di vision Two main this year and J ess Ochoa dominated Division Three with his win. Ingels, aboard his ' A8cAlPeterich Cycles /Champion /Maier Mfg.sponsored GM, pulled th e ga te of th e year with a roller that sent th e tape quivering as it went up. Ingels was so clo se to breaking th e tape he had to duck his head after th e tape bounced off h is wh eel wh en he pulled h is flying start. Bart Bast was in gate three, and managed to stay close to In gels as th ey dove into turn one. Mike Dela cy, beat en to th e turn by Ingels and Bast, had to deal with Sisem ore who was co ming out of gate four and ready to put the squeeze on through the turn. Si semore missed th e groove a nd went wide as Ingels led Bast thro ug h th e first goaround. Delacy lost co ntrol a lap later and drop~ off th e pace and into a fight. with Sisemore the rest of th e race. Ingels and Bast kept it wh eel-to- wh eel the rest of the race with Ingels clos ing th e door on Bast every tim e Bast tried to stick a wh eel in. Ingels took the checkered first, Bast second and Delacy held off Sisemore for th ird. Shawn Reppert took th e early lead in the Handicap main, but Sisemore was able to ge t a qu ick ru n th rough th e traffi c and pass Reppert fo r the win. It wasn 't until th e last lap that Sisemore go t around Rep pert wh en he pu ta wheel on Reppert to move past on th e inside in the last turn. Sisemore, sponsored by Truma n Bailey/ Arai /Oilzall and Sm it h Goggles, firs.t had to ge t pas t Robert Curry and Perr y Sherman when Bast a n d Robinson too k th eir ra ce th rough. Bast a nd Rocky Rob in son also fou ght their way pas t Sh erman and Curry to fini sh three and four. J ohn Payton had an. easy run from th e O-yard line in th e Division Two main . Dom inick DENVER , CO , MAY 15 John H oppers tad took first pl ace honor s in the Rac e of th e Rockies, for th e second co nsecutive Mountain Roadracing Association road race of th e season at Denv er's Second Creek Raceway. Race of the Rockies, sponsored by American Roofing Supply, is th e MRA 's version of California's Formula USA, and was the feature event of th e day. Hopperstad, the defending MRA champion, mounted on his Boulder Yam aha /Motorcycle Parts Center South/Shoe ilBG Oils-sponsored Yamaha FZR750, came off th e start in fifth and had to play chase for seven of the 12-lap event before finally catching and passing another Yamaha-m ounted rider , St eve Wands. H opper stad 's ot her wins came in 750cc Superb ike and in Open Su perbike o n his FZR IOOO aft er a furi ous bat tle with Boulder Motor sports West rid er Geoff Cesmat on GSXR IIOO. Cesm at and H opperstad thrilled th e crowd with a sensatio nal l O-Iap duel of hors epower and o utstanding rid ing a bi lity. In other Superbike act io n, ].T. T erry posted a spectacu lar win in 600cc Superbi ke on h is stock Honda Hurricane. The 450cc Superbike saw Loveland Yamaha-Suzuki rider Dan T urner run away o n his Yama ha FZR400. The Supersport classes saw very hea ted ac tio n because of th e Suzuki co nt ingency money o n the line. In an amazing co meback from a near-fa tal cras h two weeks previous at Puebl o Raceway, Deiter. Lane po sted a convincing win in 600cc Supersport. The 750cc Su persport saw Loveland's Dan Turner and Cycles of 'Bo u lder-sponso red Ricky Orlando dice back and forth for all 10 laps with Turner making a great last-lap charge to cash in for his second win of the day . Orlando returned in Open Supersport to totally dominate the race from green to checkered and collect the Suzuki bucks. Formula Colorado is the MRA's most unique cla ss allowing . up to 500cc two-stroke singles; 600cc four~ stro ke si ngles; 400cc tw o- stroke twins; or 450cc fo ur-stroke twins. Spangler romps AmherstMKBy Peggy Adamic AMH ERST, OH, MAY 8 Dal e Spangler scored do uble moto victories in the combined 125/ 250/ O pen A class thi s weekend when Amherst Mead o wlar ks M.e. Club opened their ga tes for the seaso n to 156 riders. Both motos were come- fro m -be hi nd wi ns fo r th e T eam Green -backed rider. Ron Dunfee shot off th e line to start rnoto one wi th Mar cus Sellards in hot pursuit. Spang ler was midpack . Dunfee held th e lead as Spa ngler began pi ckin g off the rider s ahea d of him and, by the third lap, was cha llenging Barney Barnett for third. Once past Barnett, Spangler moved in on th e two front runners and made it a three-way race for first, Sellards took the lead with Spangler also passing Dunfee less than a lap later. Sellards came up short over the triples and Spangler and Dunfee grabbed the top two spots with Sellards ba ck in third. Spangler quickly began putting distance on th e group of nders behind. Better than 20 seconds pa ssed before Dunfee, Sellards a nd Barnett passed
