Tresser, who made the field in the previous evening's National , Jumped into the lead at the flash of the green light when the 12-rider, 15lap Junior main event left the line; he went on to win the race. When the riders powered into turn . one, Tresser was immediately under pressure from Kell, Kiser, Atherton and Fisher, who held the top five positions at the end of the first lap. Tresser's lead grew, lap after lap, a nd he finally took the checkers ahead of Atherton, who won a wild shootout for second over McDonnell, Fisher and Moran. World Championship 125cc MX Series: Round 5 !Jayle'~ day In SpaIn MORON, SPAIN, MAY 8 The 125cc G P title chase is getting hotter and hotter each week be tween Frenchma n J ean- Michel Bayle and H olland's Davey Strijbos. After finishing second to Strijbos last week in Austria, Honda's Bayle came back and defeated Cagiva's Strijbos to claim the overall win in Spain, his third victory of the series (Strijbos has two) . On the extremely tigh t Moron track, Bayle eased ahead o£ Strijbos to take the , first moto win with 12 seconds to spare. Pu tting in his best ride of the season was American Mike Healev.iwho finished third, but one minute behind Strijbos. The second moto was pretty much a repeat o£ the first moto with Bayle jumping out into th e early lead and never looking back. Strijbos, however, got a poor start and spent the first half o£ the moto working his way up through the pack. By the time he reached second place, Bayle was long since gone and headed for a sweep. Strijbos went on to finish second, while Healey, once again, motored his Cagiva into the number . three position for third overall. Approaching the halfway point of the season, Bayle holds a scant eightpoint advantage over Strijbos. Back in third, a distant 70 points behind, is Holland's Pedro Tragter. World 500cc Champion Georges jobe has his work cut out for him if hehas any hopes at all of becoming the first rider in motocross history to win ti tles in all three classes. Honda 's Jobe could only collect seven points in Spain and now sits 117 points behind th e points lead er, Bayle. . Results 125 : 1. Jean -Michel Bayle (Hon) 1-1; 2. Davey Strijbos (Cag) 2-2: 3. Tarres led Saunders by a narrow margin through Monday and Tuesday before Saunders made the breakthrough on Wednesday, to ease ahead. On Thursday, the two riders remained close in points, but it wasn't until Friday when Sa u nders dropped th ree marks to Tarres' two max imums, w hich pretty m uch sewed things u p fo r Saunders. Saunders cleaned the final day on Saturday and wrap ped u p the victory after three years of finishing second. The opening day fea tu red some controversy and ended up being the tOughest day of the trials. Many riders were assessed late time pe nalties, including both Martin and John Lampkin, while several riders were disqualified from the event for houring out, Day one results had Tarres leading after dropping 13 points in 30 sections, while Saunders and John Lampkin were tied for second place with 18. Fourth was Tony Scarlett with 20. Tuesday's time schedule was much more kicked backed compared to Monday's tight schedule, with many o£ the riders taking advanta~e of the spare time to work on the bikes and change tires. Tuesday saw Saunders begin his assault on leader Tarres by dropping three points less th an the Beta pilot. Saunders' eight-point score gave hi m best o ne-day score award. Saunders climbed to within two points o£Tarres, whi le Lampkin maintained third, seven p o i n t s behind Saunders. Wednesday was the key day for Saunders. Having an early start Saunders attacked the s lippery streams with &!3ce, dropping a low - 10 points, whtle Tarres made some costly mistakes. One o£ which was passing on the wrong side of a course marker, instantly meaning a maximum score. Combined with a couple of more dabs, the Spaniard not only lost the lead, but gave Saunders a nine-point cushion heading into Thursday, 36-45. John Lampkin was riding consistently and was still in third with Honda-mounted John Shirt, Jr. closing in after displacing Yamaha-mounted Scarlett. In fact, Scarlett had a miserable day, and dropped back to ninth. Thursday meant the p leasure o£ having a late start for bo th Saunders and Tarres, the pair having gotten their early start on Wednesday out o£ the way. Sa unders' battle p lan was to ride smoothly, make no mistakes and hold on to his nine-point lead over Tarres. His strategy worked flawless ly. Both Saunders and Tarres had th e day's low-po int scores at three, so Saunders neither lost nor gained any ground on Tarres with two days to go. . Scarlett managed to put Wednesday's terrible ride out o£ his h ead an d wo rked back up to fourth in th e sta n d i n gs after dropping sev en points. Scarlett found himself six points behind John Lampkin, but Lampkin still h ad h is ea rly start ahead of him on Saturday. . Friday was a good day for Saunders who pretty much clinched things with an impressive ride, dropping just three points to Tarres' 12 (including two maximums). However, a protest Tarres filed earlier in the week was granted and he had some penalty points erased. Bu t. the damage was already done and with only one day left, Saunders he ld a 15-point lead and barring any major problems was was on his way to his first-ever Scottish win. Lampkin maintained his advantage over Scarlett for third. Saunders had no prob lems cleaning the course on Saturday, with Tarres starting the day 12 minutes late and dropping even more points . to the leader. A sparkling last-day ride gave British Yamaha rider Ph il Alderson just enough to squeeze past Scarlett to fi nish third overall. Lamp ki n's early start was costly, dropping him out of the top five. Scarlett and Brit G erald R ich ard son moved up to fin ish fourth a nd fifth. Results - 0 / A : 1. Steve Saunders (Fan); 2. Jord i Tarres (Bet): 3. Phil Alderson (Yam); 4. Tony Scarle tt (Yamt 5.
