The Expert class also , ran 10 sections and had three riders. Jeff Mezosi made his firs t ride in the Expert class a winning one, dropping 99 points on a Yamaha. Jim Altemus, riding a Fantic, scored a 141 for second overall. The last rider in th e class, J eff Gunia, rode his Beta to a 152. Yamaha made a sweep ' in the Junior class , claiming the top three spots. Kent Flaig came out on top of -the three-rider class to coll ect the ' • win with a score of 104. Brown was the overall winner and also took the overall win in the 250cc B class. Childress, Bradshaw win Muddy Creek Championship MX . By GarY Crider , BLOUNT VILLE, TN, APR. 23-24 Victory Sports' 3rd Annual AMA Ea stern Continental Championship MX and Vint age Show at Muddy Creek MX 36 saw S teve Chi ldress and Damon Bradsh aw ta ke a class win each in P ro class racing while Mik e Brown ca rved out perfect scores in 125 and 250cc B action . Mik e T aylor won the Senior (30+) division in a close match over Steve Lewi s. The Gear R a cewear-sponsored even t doubled as th e opening round o f Vic tory Sport s' $50,000 MegaSeri es. Over 240 riders from eight states turned out to compete on the 1.5 mile" natural-terrain cou rse for a share of the $4000 Pro purse, or for the $5000 in Amateur trophies an d contingen cies. T op pro rider Bradshaw pocketed $830 via his 1-1-1~6 fi n ishe s. Childress an d Jim Chester made Bradshaw work hard for his wins. Bradshaw's o pen in g l25cc Pro moto was relatively easy, however, as he gr abbed th e holeshot and quickly built up a long lead aboard his Bell/ Fox/Barr-backed Yamaha while Chester and Childress worked their way through the pack. Chester passed Mike Andrews, Mike Goolsby and Robbie Taylor to nail down the third spot before entering the DNF column with m echanical problems. Kawasak i! An swer /Scott /DMCbacked Childress overcame a 12th place start to finish third over Kenny Kizzar and Joe Maurer. Bradshaw showed the _y again at the start of moto two with Childress, Kevin Walker and Chester in tow. On lap two Bradshaw went down in a turn , surrendering the lead to Childress an d getting back underway in third behind Walker. Two laps later Bradshaw was pressuring Childress for th e lead but slid out again. "My clutch lever was bent down, so I h ad to stretch my fingers way ou t to reac h it a nd th at made my arm p ump up," said Bradsh aw . " After th at secon d crash I co u ld n't d o an yth ing." Bradsh aw h eld o n for a six th pl ace finish while Childress took th e win an d overall h onors. The final laps saw Chester move his Barr 's Competition Suzu ki past G ear 's Walker to finish second. Walker 's 6-3 was good fo r t hird ov era ll behind Bradshaw. The first 250cc/Open Pro m ot o saw Bradsh aw post a wire-t o-wi re runaway win while Childress m oved up from 10th to cha lle nge Maurer in seco nd . With two laps rem a in ing in the eigh t-lap moto Childress got by to take secon d o ver Maurer. Chester had gone down a t th e start but recovered to fin ish fourth . Bradsh aw holeshot th e final m oto but soon found Chester breathing down his neck. " Che ster bumped my rear tire a few times," said Bradsh aw, ' "but I was expecting it." Bradshaw kept a firm grip on his lines and took the win, three bike .len g ths ah ead of Chester. Childress' 2-3 earned runner-up h onors over Chester's 4-2. . Probably the closest -racing of the week end was between Cycl e World KTM 's Mike Taylor and Yamaha of J oh nso n City-backed Steve Lewis in the Senior (30+) class. Moto one saw the pair q uickly move through traffic to begin a lead-swapping duel. Said Lewis, "It was all push and shove out there. " Taylor held th e final laps and won. " At th e finish," he said, " it was so close that you co u ldn ' t have stuck a toe between us." Taylor holeshot moto two and had Lewis latched to his rear fender a ll moto. Taylor held on for the win a nd top gold. Tommy Hayes' 6-4 tally was good for third overall. Lewis returned in 25-f action to net runnerup gold behind J effrey Lyons. Despite pain from a recent partial shoulder separation, Barr/Gear/ Bare Broth ers-backed Mike Brown was never headed n th e l25cc B motos. Melville masters Eugene Trials By Paul Hayes EUGENE, IN, APR. 17 Kim Melville rode his Yamaha to a win in the Novice class at the D-I71 AMA Trials Series opener. The host club was th e Salt Fork Dirt Riders. At the end of the three loop-eight section event, Melville had a score of 63. His closest competition was Jim Zuroske with an 88. Zuroske was riding a Honda XL200 with cut-off fork-stops against the other trials machines, and claimed second place in a determined ride. Chris Krasinski Came up one dab short of tieing for secon d. In the newly-formed Championship class only three riders signed up, but they put on a fantastic show. Fantic rider Dave Rohrschneider topped the field, dropping 63 points alon~ the way . Childress dominates Challenger MX CLARKSBURG, PA, APR. 30-MAY I Steve Childress took fir st in all eight motos of fo ur 'cl asses at th e 7th Annual Honda/ AMA National Amateur MX Championship Area Qualifier held at the Challenger. Childress took overa ll wins in the 125 an d 250cc Stock and. Modified ' A classes in two days of competition. Both 125 and 250cc A divisions saw heated battles between Dan Blackham and Childress. Blackham put on several charges but h e couldn't take a win from Childress. Open A winner Jim Young had his hands full in th e first moto and took secon d behind Mike' Grafton. Open B class ac tion saw R .C. Cover wire both rnotos unchallenged. . In th e 125 a nd 250cc B class es Jon Levesque took the overall honors, giving only o ne mo ta to John Bogovich, wh o to ok secon d in the l25cc Modified B class. Craig Brooks na iled down third overall in both 125cc Stock an d Modified classes, and wo n the 250cc Modified B class-. Bogovich won both motos for the overall victory in the 250cc Stock B cla ss. . In the C classes Brian Gundry took first overall in the l25cc Stock division and finished second overall to Rod Bla ck in the Modified class. Black also had a good ' ride in the first 250cc Modified moto, working his way to the front from a mid-pack start, but a fourth in moto two left him third overall behind Kelvin , Nelson and winner Steve Haggan. Dusty Yeager and Ken Franken- > berry were wheel-to-wheel for most of both +30 class mOlOS with Yeager holding the lead for the win in the second round to wrap up the overall win. Tony Bonace took home the overall honors in the 85cc Senior Stock , and Modified . classes, winning all four motos, Shane Lawson had three strong second place rnoto finishes, but dropped to fifth in the second .
