Peterson started out by wmnmg the 250cc Stock 250cc Modified, 500cc Stock and O pen Modified classes on Saturday, then came back a nd took the 250cc Modified and Open Modified classes o n Sunday. In Su nday 's Open Exhib ition class 1987 Wid owmaker winner Kenny Kimball sped to th e top of th e hill in 12.75 seco n ds to take th e lead a fter one ru n . But two runs later Peterson took h is H arl ey to th e top in 12.72 seco n ds. Kenny's brother Mel Kimball soon bea t Peterson's run with a 12.03 performance, but th e time d i.d n't sta n d for lon g as Kenn y Kimball topped th e hill in II. 76 to tak e first p lace. Kenny Kimball also won th e 500cc Modified cla ss with a run o f 11.17 se~o n ds which beat Peterson's 11.26 cli m b: ~ e te rs on later posted th e fastest cli m b of th e day with a 11.09 ru n m the Open Mod ified class. Zach Rund ruled th e Mini classes o~ Saturday, ~~ing wins in the Mini Kids, Kids Mini and 100cc Modified class es. By Mike Murray CENTER LISL E, N.Y., AP R. 23 For th e 250 riders that showed up today at Bro o me Tioga Sports Cente~, th ey were greeted with plenty of ram, snow a nd slee t that made co nditions less th a n ideal for racing. Bu t for T om Rice, it wasn 't all that bad, for th e Kawa sa ki rider survived it all and went home carrying th e l25 cc Expert cl ass first-place trop hy . . The ra m played a m ajor rol e in today's ra cing. Race officials were forced 10 cu t do wn the n u mber of la ps in the seco nd ro u nd of racing ~nd many of the rid ers that competed in the rno to were n o-sh ows in moto two , op ting 10 p ack it u p and head for warmer and dri er grou n d. In th e I25cc Expert class , Rice had n o problem s winning m ot a one but in ro u n d two , R ice h ad to co nten d wi th Mike Dr ies. Dries pressured Rice for m ost o f the race on the wat erlogged race co u rse unti l Dries go t o ut of shape and dr op ped to third. This gave R ice another easy win a nd th e overall. Dri es, who took seco nd in th e first mo ta , cla imed seco nd overall over Larry Maxwell. Dries was again involved in a tuss le for the n umber-one trophy in the.25~cc Expert muds.linging battle. CO, AP R. 24 Approximately 450 riders stormed into Prairie H ills Pro motio ns MX today, and it was Stacey Cook with lighten in g fast speeds to capture the overall vic tory in the 125 a nd 250cc Pro cla sses. Bu t neither wi ns came easi ly. . In th e fir st l25 cc mota Cook blasted into th e ea rly lead ahead of Keith Campbell and Tim Buchli. Positio ns remained the same u ntil lap four, when Buchli took over . second after passing Campbell. Fro m then on, Buch li hounded Cook the whole way . It wasn' t u ntil the fi nal la p when Bu chli ma de h is m ove an d motored by Cook an d into th e lea d. Buchli took the wi n followed by Cook a nd Ca m p bel l. In round two it was Buchli ta ki ng th e ea rly lead, wh ile Cook was stu ck in tra ffic in eigh th . H owever , Cook was o n th e gas a n d even tually weaved h is way into seco nd. On the last lap , Cook was on Buchl i's rear fender a nd j us t as Bu chli had done to Cook in the first mo to , Cook did th e same back and shot into th e lead and took th e win. Cook's second m oto win broke th e tie wi th Buchli to ca p ture th e overa ll. . Cook led th e first 250cc bout from sta rt to fin ish wi th Dave Newell pu tti ng o n a slig h t cha lle nge for th e firs t ha lf o f the rnoto, Derek Brown settled into th ird th en passed Newell for second. At the fin ish it was Cook, Brown and Newell. In round two, Cook again jam med into th e lead with Newell close be hind a nd Bro wn runn in g midpack. A fi rs t lap crash which occu rred wh~n pave Phillips slipped under Jim Billingsly left both riders wi th too m uc h grou n d to cover for a win, but they finished th ird and fourth, respectively. In heat two , Bangert er led until the last lap whe n Billingsly m ade a last lap, last turn pass to win by a whee l. Rob erts too k th ird. The Women 's h eats saw Debra Colt~ win both legs handily with Damell e Mabry a n d Vicki e Wayment rounding out th e top three. In a n ew class for 1988 50cc Superbike, Bangert er came fr~m the back o f. th e 'p~ck to lead from lap seven with Billingsly a nd Rob erts in t? w. In .heat two , Rob erts put his light weig h t to wo rk a nd went wireto -wire in fro nt. Bangerter n arrowly edged Billingsly for seco n d. Ch ri s G ardn er 's Kawasaki KX80powered YSR motored a ll over every o ne in both h ea ts as Gardner slid th e rea r wh eel an d wheelied out of eac h c~rner. Steve Pra tt, who just put th e fin al touch es o n his bright yellow, wa ter-cooled, Suzuki RM80· powered GSXR50, h ad m ot or on everyone b ut DNF o n lap eight with a b roken s h i fter . Ben Behunin brought h is one -of-a -ki n d liquidcooled .KX80-p o wered bike, co mpl.ete with a custom frame, fairing, slicks a nd an under-bell y fuel cell, but a lso had to retire with sh ift linkage problems. . Second place was Roberts' on a Yamaha YZ80-powered bike and th ird went to Billingsly. In h eat two, Pratt had. fixed his shifter and finished second behind Gardner. . Roberts fini shed th ird.
