Childress clung to the lead for the win while Reed claimed second and Maurer third. Maurer shot into the lead and was unstoppable in moro two followed by Childress, Agin and Reed. Childress and Reed tried their luck at catching Maurer but Maurer styled it, maintaining first. Childress tried on the outside to go by Reed but Reed hung to second. Maurer earned the checkered followed by Reed and Childress. . ' Lenny Sauer gassed it on the start of moto one with 23 riders in the Senior Mini class followed by Joe Woodfork, Joshua Steel and Shane Peck . Steel grabbed the lead on lap two through the whoops to remain first at the checkered with Sauer and Woodfork filing by for second and third. The second moto saw Robbie Sturgill with the lead but Steel went by for another win. Sturgill, . in second, went down in the whoops but managed to hold off Sauer and finished second. Ott's hot at Speedway USA By Scott Daloisio 40 VICTORVILLE, CA, APR. 17 Bobby Ott, like most of the other speedway riders, contemplatedturning back and going home on his way to Speedway USA on Sunday afternoon. The trek through the mountains on Cajon Pass featured rain, fog and cold temperatures. Fortunately, Ott decided to forge ahead and he found sunshine and a warm afternoon on the other side of the mountains. He also found his way to the Scratch main checkered £lag i before any of his four competitors. . 'fhe'casuaIty list of big name riders was loaded on Sunday afternoon. . Sam Errnolenko, Gary Hicks, Alan Christian, Bobby Schwartz and Dubb Ferrell were eliminated from Scratch competition in their heat race. Ott, on the STP/Cirello Racing Godden, got the jump from gate four the first time the main was started but Louis Kossuth spun out, forcing Billy Hamill to lay it down in the first bend and out came a red £lag. The entire field restarted and Kossuth pushed his Weslake into turn one first. Ott was on the outside and he used the dirt to power himself past Kossuth as they came off turn two. While Ott was taking over the point, Oxley, the previous week's winner, went to work on Hamill and before the end of the first circuit he had gotten by for third. Ott opened it up on lap two while Oxley began to apply the heat to Kossuth. Oxley never could get by but he did almost advance to second at the finish and Kossuth almost moved up to first. Just a few feet after he had taken the Don Robinson checkered £lag, Ott's muffler broke loose. If that had happened 10 feet sooner he would have been disqualified. . Like the Scratch main, the Handicap main had a hard time getting underway. An early crash involving Jessee Finch and Hamill brought the proceedings to a haIt. The entire field restarted but things failed to get far before Walt Farnum, Gary Hicks and Eddie 'Castro bit the dust and out came another red. Everyone but Castro made the second restart and the race, even though there were a ' few more red _ flags , went without the . benefit of another halt. Finch, who got on the program as a reserve and won his two preliminary events, set the tempo early on over Larsen and Kevin Krugh. . Larsen quickly got by Finch but less than two laps later, he went wide out of turn four and handed the point position back to the young charger.. This time Finch staked his GM to first and never looked back. That was a good omen as'what was happening behind him was anything but artistic. Hicks hit the dirt on lap five and pulled to the infield. Krugh, who was doing a great job of holding back Hamill, went down late in the event. The attrition rate seemed to be catching. One lap from the finish, Farnum joined the crowded infield when he slid out in turn three. By the time the checkered came out, it was Find, with room to spare over 'survivors Larsen, Hamill and Eddie Ingels. . e; Results SCRATCH: 1. Bobby on (Gdn); 2. Louis Kossuth (Wes); 3. Texter hot at frigid Trail-Way ST By Len Breech HANOVER, PA, APR. 16. With temperatures dipping into the 30s, the close finishes in many classes kept the action hot as Trail-Way Speedway hosted their third short track race of the season, with Randy Texter taking two wins. . Texter took his third straight season win in the 750cc Expert class and stopped the Majeski family 600cc winning streak at three with his win over a very ' close Rob Majeski. Another season long win streak was halted, as Paul Southard finally held off Kevin Varnes in the 200cc Amateur class. John Winsett upper his season long win streak in the 55 class to four. Lew Woods led a closely bunched field of Texter, Rob Majeski, Georgie Price, and Ken Coolbeth and the rest of the 600cc Expert class. Texter took the lead as they ended the second lap. A lap later, Rob Majeski went into the runner-up slot, while Woods drifted into a race long battle for third with Price and Tom Majeski. Rob Majeski closed the gap on Texter for the lead in the late laps, while the others were using every portion of race track in their battle for third. Coming off four, Texter got a little better drive, and won by . a length. For closeness, the 250cc Experts get the award, as the top four ran the race like they were hooked to each other with bungi cords. Tom Cerciello took the lead from Georgie Price, and Mike Klopp, with Dave Duhanine joiriing in a few laps later. Price took the lead on the third lap, with Klopp taking over the next lap, and Price regaining the lead two laps later. Duhaine had closed into a very close fourth, with Randy Texter - . working his way up from the third row to pressure Duhaine. As they took the white flag, Klopp's coil went out, and so did he, and Price held on to win by a length. Closest of the Amateur classes, as usual, was the 200s, as Paul Southard and Kevin Varnes pulled away from the pack and ran side-by-side for most of the final. Southard ran a low, tight line with Varnes beside him, looking for a mistake that never came, as he won by a length. Jim Lynch was lucky to even be in the top five in the 600cc Amateur final, after he stalled on the line at the start, but a four rider crash brought everyone back. Dallas Baer grabbed the lead from Lynch, Jerry Hash, with Darryl Baer moving into fourth after the second lap. While Dallas Baer 'a nd Lynch replayed their heat race for the second Trail-Way event, Wayne Franklin moved into fourth, while Jill Lautenbacher moved up to challenge DarryI Baer for fifth. Baer held off Lynch until the final lap, when Lynch slipped by on .the back straight. But Baer had a little better drive coming off the final tum and slipped by for the win. Rich Mellinger took his third straight 250cc Amateur final in rather easy fashion. Eddie Hidden moved up from a bad start to methodically pick off one rider after another, finally getting by Mike Walton on the final lap to take second. Results 750 EX: 1. Randy Texter (H-D); 2. Nelson, Andris share honors at Baylands MX By Mike Vancil FREMONT, CA, APR. 6 Jon Nelson and Kelly Andris won the 250 and 500cc Pro classes, respec tively, at the first CMC-sanctioned race of 1988 at Baylands Raceway Park. O£( the line first in both 250cc Pro motos was Eric Sandstrom on a Kawasaki. By the second lap Nelson had come from fourth to grab the lead and in his wake it was Andris on a Hi-Point/ Arai/Torco Oils/Pro . Circuit Raci n g/ Ren th al Handlebars-sponsored Yamaha. At the end of each moto the ' first four places were the same: Nelson.Andris, John Dauth on a Honda and Sandstrom. Nelson is sponsored by Fox Racing, Team U.S., Smith Goggles, Dublin Kawasaki, Arai and Serrano Designs. The 500cc Pro class motos were equally exciting as again the overall winner had to catch the early leaders and then withstand late race challenges. Andris capped both motos but in each he had to work hard to get by holeshot artist Bruce Manzoni.
