Hall dominates Indy Road Race By Larry Lawren ce CLERMONT , IN , AP R. 10 Kurt Hall won four classes and $1325 at Indianapolis Ra cewa y Park in WERA reg ional spri nt ac tio n. H all raced hi s first roa d race here four year ago and feels right at home on the trick y 2.5 mile circuit. Ohio's T om Kipp was second in winn ings earning $690 for his win in th e Open Formula class aboard his Yamaha, in fact this weekend saw a di stribution of contingen cy dollars like never before. A total of 13 riders shared in the contingency dollars available. In a ~eat show of generosity WERA nders raised $1750 to benefit the family of Dave Essex, the WERA riders school instructor who tragically died in a plane crash last winter. pave will be mi ssed but his memory lives on for th e hundreds of riders who learned from and raced with him through the years. K&:L Racing won the Dave Essex Mem orial End ur ance race o n Sat urday co mpleting 96 laps in th e th ree hour event averagi ng 80 mph. Fritz Kling and Dave Knapp rode a RH Cycle/College Bike Shop-sponso red 600cc Hurrican e to win the event over Hu man Racing and T eam T BA. or the four races that H all wo n duri ng Su nday's fina le o ne was close - C P rod uction. Hall pulled away fro m the field early in the race bu t Fritz Kling came up from fifth p lace to cha lle nge H all on th e last lap. Kling was in a perfect position to draft H all com ing .ou t of the last tu rn, but with a 50 pound weight adva ntage H all pulled away an d won • the race by about two bike len gth s. Tom Kipp's wi n in the Open Form ul a class nett ed Kipp $690 ($500 fro m Ya maha a nd $ 190 from WERA ). Kipp blew up the Yam aha in morning practice but quick work by his crew enabled him to make th e · gri d for th e final. Kipp's I:42.56 o n lap six was the quickest of th e ·weekend. Kipp won by five seconds over J ohn Eidenberger, One of the most exciting races of th e da y was the B Superbike Novice contes t. Local rider Doug Sholty led most of th e first lap until Bob Sandy made an aggressive mov e diving into a hairpin and pushing himself into th e lead. Jeff Ga ynor joined the other two in the tightest racing of ' the I weekend. Sholty dropped back by two seconds in the middle part of , th e race but on th e last few laps Gaynor ran off th e track and Sholty darted back into the lead. On the final turn of th e last lap Sholty tri ed to o ut brake Sandy but went h igh, Sandy saw the op po rtunity and too k the low line pull in g even. Sholty ga thered co ntrol of hi s machine and was back o n th e gas, exiting the tu rn th e two Su zukis colli ded hard but both rid ers stayed on th e gas. Louisiana 's Bret Beauch amp too k home th e Super Mini gold while Mississippi resident Allen Ross claimed th e 125cc C honors. Wallace Finch er nailed down th e Open B win while Georgia's Tomm y Martin and David Kell y of Flori da too k a class win each in A di vision actio n. Will Mc Nabb , o f Lo ui si an a , grabbed the hol eshot in th e open ing 125cc C mo to wi th Ross and La nce Bra nnon getting underw ay in the top 10. Gear/ Honda West-backed Ro ss moved quickly to fifth spo t an d, after three laps, was in the lead to stay. Freewh eel in g H onda 's Bran no n moved up to challenge McNabb's hold on second position and they battled all th e way to the finish wi th McNabb holding th e edge in a close finish. Series leader Brock Bullard cam e from th e back of th e pack to finish fourth o n his Marus hi n/EPbacked Kawasaki. A light rain crea ted slick conditions for mo to two but Ross was unfazed and led fro m start to fini sh , earning a perfect score. Said Ros s, " I' m a rea ll y good mud rider, so th e wet mo to was no problem for me. " Brannon managed to get by McNabb this time and held on to post 3-2 for runner-up honors over McNabb's 2-3 tally. Bullard started th ird but a spill set him back to a fifth pl ace finish and fourth overall. Kawasaki of Denam Springsba ck ed Beauchamp came from behind to finish third in th e first Super Mini moto and returned for a wire- to-w ire win in mota two to net top hon ors over Brian Raymond and series leader Matt Sh ue. First mo to winner Ezra Lusk slid down at th e start of th e final and was held to a fifth pl ace finish and fourth overall. L usk returned for a I-I tally in Sen ior Mini action over Sh ue and Beaucham p . In the tough Open B class, Wallace Fincher piloted his Cycle World of Gadsden-b acked XR600 Ho nda to a I-I score over series leader Alle n H a rr ison . T he ir seco nd rn oto , winner-take-all battl e was a thriller as Fincher reeled in leader Ha rrison to eventua lly go by for th e win . In hard-fought 250cc C action, Brannon came away with a perfect score over the 4-2 posted by Kipp Bru le'. J im my Willis carded a 3-5 for third o ver series leader Ru sty Cohen 's 6-3. Kenny Stowe's 2-9 was good for fifth overa ll. Danny Haynes was far o ut front in th e first Junior Mini m oto wh en an improm p tu doubl e-jump attempt p ut him on the grou nd. Haynes reco vered for an event ua l 3-1 ta lly behind Suzuki rider J ason Grier, who claimed the overa ll honor s via 1-2 finishes. Double-class seri es lead er Haynes returned to win th e 65cc division aft er sharing moto wins with runnerup David Dishman. Mason Williams came back from a poor first moto start to finish 22 for th e Pee-Wee class win over series leader J erem y Nevels' 4-1 ta lly.
