After havin g to throw out the last field check (number nine), changing loop one's check three to an observa tion check, and rearrowing a key right- hand tu rn in the last 5A-mile lon g special , Tehachapi 's Steve "Woodcutter " Williams thoroughly dusted all compe tition wi th the only one point drop of the day. Taking the overall win a t 1.66, as well as the Open AA class on his Yama ha YZ490, Williams led last month 's winner Jason Ingerso ll, who recorded a 2.115 drop for th e 250cc AA win on hi s CR250 Honda. District 37's 250cc AA rider Mark Cook took thi rd overa ll and first 250cc AA Vet at 2.132. Mark Glas meier decided last month 's 35th overa ll wasn't good enough, and danced his big YZ490 Granada Yama ha like it was a 125 through the special tests to ta ke four th overall , fir st Open A, at 2.194 . ' . O 'Neal USA/Smith Goggles/ Bear RacingMfr. / Duralub e/ DNA sponored Don ni e Simone, despite h is computer q uitting about 10 miles out, took the 200cc AA win, ro unding out the top five with a 3.85 minute drop. . Will iams was almost a non-starter today. " It started off rea l bad . Yesterday , I tore a hamstring, so my leg was real sore. I had a lo t of traffic, some people a nd dust to contend with in the last loop two special test of the race. I burned chec k three in the Barbender Rocks first loop special test and th e mileage seemed off abou t .2 mile. I don 't know if the y will throw it out." O p en A winner Glasmeier was one of .the many top riders .' who bu rned chec k three, stating, " I hear everyone says it's off . . . " Simon e added , " T h e mileage was off at least 2/10s. I (also) came in on my minute at check six after the tunnel, went in 10 seconds late, and they burn ed me. I don 't understand what happened there, bu t the special tests were great in loo p two ." . One of the other major problems of the day occurred in the well- liked extra long 5A-mile special test at the end of loop two - sheep . As many as one thousand or. more sheep ate the turn arrows atthe top of a co urse ridgeline, caus ing many riders from lines one to about 53 to complete ly mi ss the sudde n right-hand dive down into a saddle. Merv Murray, on minute 34, was one. "Everyone was circling around up th ere every which way." T hree of the hottest rides of the day had to be Rich McDan iel, Andy Ord in g and Clint Diaz. All are 250cc B riders, finishing first to third in class at 16th, 18th and 20th overa ll. Class winner McDaniel, said " I go t lost last time, but not today I They ha d excellent turns, excellent marking - a really nice enduro;" Results 0 / A : 1. Steve Williams (Vaml; 2.
