MAR. 27 Mike Andrews rolled to wins in th e . 125cc A a nd 250cc A classes whi le Mark Ash worth was the big wi n ner in the Open A and 25 Plus classes in ro und one of the Virginia State Spring MX Series at David Bailey's La ke ' S ugar T ree Motocro ss Raceway. S&M Suzuki 's Andrews decim ated the 125cc A class with two fla wless ri des wh ile Brian Sta nley edged J o hn Win slow for second overall. Kevin Wa lker dove in to the first turn with the lead in the first 250cc A mota and skipped away fro m th e pa ck whil e Andrews recovered fro m a firs t la p mis hap to grab seco nd from Ricky Joyce. Wh en th e ac tio n began it was Dann y Mathis wi th th e hol esh ot in the fir st Open B mota followed by Shane Kennedy, David Saw yer .a nd Steve J arjabka. After a brief encounter between th e fir st two ri ders, Kennedy found himself with a huge lead while Mathis rolled to a halt on th e far side of th e course with a n empty gas tank. Kennedy cla imed a sure win over Sawy er a nd J arjabka while Ri chard Wendleton a nd CanAm -mounted Greg Bunn fill ed ou t th e top five. Kennedy did hi s th ing once again in moto two with a refueled Mathis coming in second over Jarjabka and Saw yer. In 250cc B class action Jay H au ser took the lead from Mathis in th e ope ni ng moto with Chris Brewer moving to second followed by Brad Proctor. At th e midway p oint Yamaha of Lumberton's Proctor got the sign al from tuner Rusty Allison th at . he was catching the leaders. With time running out, Proctor shot past Brewer an d reeled in H au ser for th e wi n while Greg Erwin di spl aced Brewer for th ird. Ed Santuk led the second mota before Hauser and Erwin moved past in a tight battle for the lead. Erwin too k the wi n with Proctor mo ving past H au ser in the fin al laps to secure the o vera ll a hea d of Erwin a nd Hau ser. Robbie and Ri ch ie H or ton scored th e overa ll win s in tlie Pee Wee a nd J r Mini classes , respecti vely. Hanson DELTA, PA , MAR. 27 Brock Satte lmaier, 1987 Distri ct 7 Trial s Champion, proved again to be th e best rid er on' wet slate by . taking th e 2nd Annual Slat e Mountain ' T ria l by six marks over hi s nearest compe titor, Lewis Bolopue. Sattelmai er won the in augural event last year and prevail ed o nce aga in this year over a mu ch larger field of riders. Sattelmai er' s tactics of waiting and ' studying hi s competi tor's lin es a t section two paid off wi th a perfect score of zero compared to th e threes and fives' most of the other riders in curred on th e near-verti cal ascen t. The rid ers began to settle down in the next. three sections with zero a nd one scores, but were put to the test in th e number six " Wor ld Cl ass" section. It was here th at first-round cleans by both Bolopue and Joe justick closed things up a bit, with Justick tak ing th e lead by two po ints when Sattelmai er fived the section. J ustick held th e' lead through section seven but relinquished it when he failed to make it out of section eig h t. Sa tte lmaier· rallied wit h a clea n, a nd th e tall y a t th e end of th e fir st loop sho wed him back in front wit h a score of nine. Gary Sam psel and William Garbr ick were tied for second a t 12 points, followed by Justick a t 13 a nd Bol opue w ith , 14 poi n ts. Bolo p ue moved u p to second by the en d of loop two, on ly th ree points o ut of the lead , but dropped from co nt ent ion with a 10-point th ird loo p. .I ustick kep t the pressure o n until a di sastrous l fi-p oin t fin al circuit put him out of tro phy con tention. Sattelmai er's win was largely du e to hi s performa nce in ascending sectio n two , as h is four clea ns in four attempts eq ualled the to tal number of cleans in th at section by all of hi s com pe titors combined. Bowie Pearre (Bet) . 1: Buchli takes two at PuebloMX By Larry Johnson P UEBLO, CO, MAR. 27 Tim Buchli pulled off a double win toda y at Pu ebl o in th e 125 and 250cc Pro classes. The Vickery Mot orsports teamster was th e ' first rid er in thi s seaso n to acco mplish this fea t. Buchli won the first 125cc Pro mota , but had to settle for second beh ind Kip Sandell in ro und two. Sandell had finished third in mota one, earn ing second overall ahea d of Rob ert Revoi r. Dave Newell beat Buchli in th e first 250cc Pro mot o, bu t Buchli came back to win th e second ro und to assur e his double victory. Newell , with a 1-3 tall y, finish ed second overall in front of John Bru ckbauer. New ell has taken his Golden Motorcycle Center-sponsored Kawasaki to victory in every Open Pro mota so far this year. Noone in th e class has been able to touch Newell this seaso n, and he just goes abo u t th e bu sin ess of bea ting everyone in hi s class. Andy Atkins has been nearly as su ccessful thus far in the 80cc Expert class. While he did finish second to his top challenger Jeremy Middaugh in their first mota of the season, he 60 NOV: 1. Smith, Drake tops at Ohio Valley MX By Susan Willian LOUISVILLE, KY, MAR. 27 Suzuki-mo unted T im Sm ith romped to wins in the Senior and Money class a t Ohio Vall ey Racewa y while Kawa saki spee ds ter Chuck Drak e aced both motos of th e 80cc class. Sm ith led from start to fini sh in both motos of the Money class as Marv in Sipes a nd Gen e H od ge filed by seco nd a nd thi rd in mot a one. Sipes returned in mota two for a seco nd whil e H odge dropped to fourth. . Randy Poynter shot off th e startin g line in mota o ne of th e Senior class as Sm ith moved swiftly into the front spo t by Poynt er. Smit h domina ted the remainder of th e mota for the win with Poynter taking second. Again in mota two, Poyn ter fired off th e starting line to lead the pack but Smith mad e a rep eat perfor man ce to take charge and chal k up a nothe r win. T he 80cc class was the la rgest class of th e da y as Eric Goatl ey held th e lead o nly for a short time in moto one as Chuck Drak e moved into the lead through th e first set of wh oops. Drake stretch ed out a comforta ble lead with John Brunck in second, som e distance back, and Mike Cones third. Drak e go t ca ugh t up in lapped rid ers to take a dip in the mud, dropping into second as Brunck took the lead. " I tried to pass a lapped rid er 'and .slid out in th e mud to take a mud bath ," commented Drake. Drake worked his way back into first to take th e win at the checkered ' followed by Brunck and Goatley. Drake had an unblemished rid e in mota two as he left the pack beh ind. Goatley and Brunck switched positions as. Goatley filed by in second and Brunck took third. Moto one of the 125cc B class found Brent Holweger taking charge as he was pressured by second place Chris French. French moved into the lead on lap 'one as Holweger chased . French around the course. Holweger tried on the outside of the WIde sweeper to go by French but French ca me off th e sweeper maintaining fir st. Holweger contin ued to pressure French and fin ally pulled beside him but let off the gas. Holweger th en took the outside to gain the front position and stretched out his lead as he grabbed first place honors followed by French and Kevin Kassey.
