APR. 2 Kelly Byrd and Kye Gunn, both on Suzu kis , fough t each other for th e lead in the AMAlCCS lOOK solo en durance race at Firebird Raceway. Soon after th e ha lfway point. Kelly tried a pass in the carousel turns. but went down with Yamaha rider Greg Nichols. Greg hit th e tire wall hard. sustaining a broken co llarbo ne: The race was red-flagged a t that point leaving fir st place in the GTO division open to Kye Gunn on a Suzuki 1l00. In th e combined Lightweight! Heavyweight Supersport event. Heavyweights Kye Gunn a nd Kelly Byrd o nce agai n led a large group of bikes throug hout th e .first half. At one point, Kell y a nd his Suzuki 750 had a l O-second lead ove r Kye C un n, but Kelly ran out o f gasoline about halfway through the 17-lap race. h a n d i n g the vi ctory to Gunn . Yamaha rider Scott Will ock and Ho n d a -m o u nted Lan ce Ba ker ba tt led for second place in th e H ea vyweigh t class. Lance spilled in tu rn three, enab ling Scott to take seco nd place on hi s Yamaha 600. T h e Ligh tweight and H eav yweight Superbike race was shadowed by p ro blems from th e start. Several rid ers were injured in this race. • which was red-flagged a fter two laps. and then aga in shortly after th e halfwa y mark. The red flag appeared after o nl y two laps due to racer J im Nelson 's fall. Jim su ffered a broken collarbone from the incident. Kye Gunn tried to repair his ailing Suzuki while th e track was being cleared. but hi s mechanical trouble persisted. for e.ing him o u t of th e race sho rt ly aft er its restart. Although Geoff Cesmat took a half-second lead for several laps. the H eavyweigh t Superbike co m pe titio n soo n turned into a seri es of posi tio n changes be tween Wi llie Adams, Kell y Byrd, a nd Mic hael McI ntyre after Cesma t crashed his Suzuki on the back curves. H igh speeds and hea vy traffic through the carousel turns spilled two more riders shortl y after the ha lfwa y signal ' was given. G lenn Smith ran over fallen rider Rober t _ o t an opinion? G Bun n ell . a nd th e ra ce ' was redflagged 'for the secon d time. Glenn was able to bob ble o ff the track, bu t Robert broke his collarbone in the fall. Since. mor e than ha lf the laps had been completed. th e ra ce was declared complet ed . with Willi e Adams and Kell y Byrd taking first and second o n Suzuki 750s, followed by third place Michael McIntyre on a Yamaha 750. In the last race of the da y, for vintage motorcycles. Craig Skinner u pset J o h n Scott in the fina l minutes of the race. Joh n a nd his Triumph 750 held a strong lead for mos t of the 17 laps.
