Hachmeister BYRON, IL , MAR. 27 For th e second week in a row, Bob Behrens was the rider to beat in the 125 and 250cc Expert classes at Motosports Park. Behrens charged to . th e front or the pack at the drop or th e gate in each or the fou r motos, and despite cha llenges by Wisconsin 's Bob Nebel , Behrens never relinquished the lead. In th e first 125cc A rnoto, Kevin Popeako chased Behrens earl y, while Neb el moved up from back in th e pa ck. By la p three, Popeako and his Cagiva sett led into the third spot whil e Nebel moved up o n Behren s. Both Nebel and Behrens excelled on different, parts or th e race tra ck , but Behren s was able 1 maintain th e 0 slig h t edge he needed to tak e the win. The-second moto was a rep lay of th e - first with Popeak o chas ing Behren s early and Nebel , o n h is Honda, cha rgi ng fro m behind. T eam Green 's Stevie Childr ess was second in all four above clas ses. Kevin Au stin narrowl y edged Robert Patterson in th e Open B thrill er. Th e Au stin/Patter son Open B fight wen t down 10 th e wire both da ys. Au stin hol esh ot Saturday's moto aboard hi s Tom Mil ler -tuned, Pr o-Circuit/O 'Neal-backed Honda but found Patterson 's H onda pushing h im after a few turns. On th e third lap o r the eig ht- la p, 15-minute moto , Patterson sli p ped past a nd it was Austin's turn to ea t dirt as the pai r co n tin ue d th eir hi gh-speed tandem. " O n th e last lap, a t th e bottom of the big hill before th e finish line, Patterson bobbled ," sa id Austin, "so I held it wide open through the mud on the outside and went by." 'Austin holeshot Sunday's moto with Pa tterso n in lOW. Lap two saw Patterson tak e th e lead. Their big Hondas were frequently side-by-side through th e turns but Patterson clung to his advantage. On th e last lap , Austin made his move. Said Austin, " I got a good drive on him th ro ugh the gu lly af ter the white £lag a nd went by o n the inside." Au stin held in a close Iinish to net a perfect score over Patterson. Senior (30+) winner Mich ael Taylor posted 4-5 for third overall. Life 's-A -Beach/B ell /Fox/Barrbacked Bradsh aw won a ll four motos in 125 a nd 250cc A Stoc k ac tio n but hi s perfect record was threat en ed in the fin al 250 round wh en he stalled his engine a nd sa w Childress go by. Brad sh aw gav e chase a nd regained th e lead wh en Childress was slo wed by landing in S9h din over a jump. Chi ld ress held for second overa ll. The first 125cc C Stock rno to probab ly surfered the most wind. , " T he jumps were real scary, " said moto winner Lance Brannon. "The wind would lift the front wheel 100 high or bl ow the bike sideways through th e air." Brannon held on through the weekend for con vincing wins in both ' lhe 125cc C Stock and Modified divi sions. The wind hampered Brannon's 250cc C efforts in a different way after hi s bike was blown off its stand in th e pi ts, sm ashing the kill -button. Brannon won lWO of the four 250cc C Stock a nd Modified mOlDS but intermitt ent kill-button sh orts held him 10 fifth overall in both classes. Bill y Adk ins posted 1-2 Ior the Stock win while J am es Wilkerson's 2-1earned the Modified honors. Mike Brown looked unbeatab le in 125 and 250cc B Modified action as he sped 10 perfect scores over Todd Downs and Dwa in Miller. T he 125 and 250cc B Stock division ho nors belonged to Jeff Shuler. Dabney" Bowen and Scott R unyan traded blows in the 85cc 14-I5 Stock and Modified raci ng and came away with a class win each.
