Mulligan, Antunez Buddy Antunez rode his Suzuki t o wins in t he BOcc Modified Expert and SuperM in i Open classes at Las Vegas Int ern at ional Raceway. Bro wn with th e win, Hart, Davis, Pr eston a nd Turner rounding ou t the top five positio ns. When the \ results were tall ied it was H art taking home the big dollars with a 2-2 overall win. Davis' 3-3 nett ed h im seco nd a nd Tu rn er's 1-5 score recei ved th ird. Mi ke Beier shot ou t to an early lead in the 125cc Pro class with KTM 's Todd Ca mpbell a nd Cagiva 's Go rd o n Wa rd r iding with in a bike len gth o f eac h o ther. Beier started ope ning up a lead o n lap two a nd Camp bel l was pulling away fro m Ward. Two laps lat er Ward's rea r brak e cab le snapped, gi vin g Davi s third. Davi s sta rted to hone in on Ca m p be ll but wh en the race came 10 a n end Beier took a comforta ble win wh ile Camp bell finish ed in the runner -up slo t with Davis nipping a t hi s rear fender. In moto two , it was Beier aga in a t th e front o f the mob with Davis attached to hi s rear fend er. Davi s soon took th e lead wi th Beier hot on hi s heels while Ward held third. Beier repassed Davi s, wh o now had Ward to contend with. With th e passin g of a nothe r lap, Ward occu pied seco nd while Beier had o pe ned up a 30·yard lead th at lasted to th e fin ish . Dav is took third place and with it seco nd overall behind Beiers perfect I-I. .Ward clai med thi rd via a 6-3 ride. In 250cc Intermediate actio n, Kenny Maddux jumped ou t to a n early lead tha t was to go unchal len ged th e entire first moto, Beh in d h im Ri chard Geraghty and J amie Morabi to d iced fo r secon d. J im Kun tz mad e a pass on Morabito for thi rd, but so o n fell ba ck. Tony Mor era was o n the move and in the closing la ps im p ro ved hi s posi tio n by ge tti ng' aro und Morabi to. As the checkered £lag £lew fo r Mad dux, T racy Monterone cap tured secon d with Mor eta a di stant third. In mo to two Mike Fowl er hol esh ot with Steven Sibell a nd Monterone in close co m pany. At the halfway point, Kuntz, who had shot up through the ranks, was holding orr Monterone for the lead spo t with Maddux runnin g third. With two la ps left, Monterone - made his move and went into th e lead a nd sta yed th ere to take the checkered with Kuntz close behind. Sibell outjumped Morabito and went into third with Maddux rounding out th e 52 top five spots. When th e resul ts were tallied up, Monterone took home first overa ll with Maddux 's 1-5 good for second. Kuntz' 6-2 gave him th ird o vera ll honor s with Morabi to a nd Kevin Montgomery ro u ndi ng o u t th e top five places. In . Davy captured seco nd overall by goin g 3-2 with Harris putting his open M-Star in to th ird. The co urse was very tricky due to tame las Vegas MX LAS VEGAS , NV , MAR . 20 Kerry Mulligan and Buddy Antunez to- up the track at Las Vegas re Internat ional Ra ceway , dustin g so me tough com pe titio n in th e l25cc Pro a nd 80cc Modified Ex pert and Super Mini classes, respectively. T.L. Tay lor ripped the 125cc Pros for th e firs t-rno to hol eshot a nd led the pa ck th rou gh the' first la p . . Mullig-lIl was layin g second, sha dowing th e lead er a nd just wa it in g for his chance. As soo n as Taylo r ove rshot a berm o n lap two , it was Mull iga n wh o got by a nd took a n easy win. Brett Redman , Levi Noble and Darr in Hoeft fin ish ed in the nex t th ree spots.· Mi ke Durbin's tu rn came next, as he had the early lead in race two unt il , Mulligan quickl y muscled pa st for th e lead o n lap o ne. Taylor put a cha rge on, but it was too little, too lat e. Mullian was racing with a badly bruised foot, but you couldn't tell as he wicked it up and cru ised to hi s seco nd. easy win. Redman , T aylor and Ru bin followed . Final sta ndings had Mulligan with th e overall win with Redman seco nd, Durbin in th ird a nd Noble fourth. Minicycle Stock Expert winner J oel Albrecht popped the hol eshot III 80cc Modifi ed ac tio n as Du stin Eva ns a nd Jerr Grafton were glued to his rear fend er. Antunez was on the gas a nd on the move, how ever , as th e Suzu ki star slas hed h is way to seco nd during lap one. Slowly but su rely Antunez coa xed hi s wa y closer to Albrech t, until he was bang in g o n the back doo r. Albrecht refu sed to crac k, a nd the rest of the race featured a dandy scra p for th e lead , with Albrech t hang in g o n for the close win over Antunez. Eva ns sta bbed the holeshot to sta rt ro u nd two, j us t a hea d of Albrech t, Derek Natv ig and Dan a Wiggin s. Antu nez was on th e move after a first lap co llisio n wi th Wi gg in s a n d clawed h is way to 'seco nd behind th e streaki ng Evans. An tu nez blasted into th e lead wh en Evans went over a berm o n lap three. Fro m th en on it was h istory as Albrecht tried to mak e a la te cha rge. The da y's last race might just have been th e toughest, as th e "Su per Mini" Open cla ss put some of the world's fastest 80cc riders in the sadd le. Antu nez led the Super Mini cla ss into the first turn a nd disappeared in the first. moto, Grafton an d Albrecht battled for seco nd until Albrecht lo st it in the back section on lap four, dropping from contention. That a lso dropped the rest of th e suspense from the ra ce a s Antunez took th e win o ver Grafton, Wiggins a nd Evans. In th e seco nd mot o Antunez hol eshot while G raft on, Evans, T ommy Cl ow ers and Albrecht scram bled for seco nd. By Tony Sakkis SO NO MA, CA, MAR. 27 Don Green e on ly com pe ted in two races a t the 1988 AFM Sears Point open er, but th e rumblings arou nd th e paddock were a ll abo u t him. In hi s first event; Formula T wo , Greene started in the seco nd row amidst th e seco nd wave of riders. The O pen GP bikes, which started in th e first wave, sho uld have been able to keep o ut o f G reen e's pa th , but withi n three laps Greene 's H onda had ca ugh t the tail end o f the Open GP pack. Wh ile j eff Hagan, the pol esitter and eventual wi n ner o f th e la rger di spl acem ent class was turn in g I:53s o n th e twi sty 2.5 mile ra ceway, Green e was posting blistering laps of I:48s on a bik e one- fourth the size. In fact , in a n even t shorte ned due to time constraints, Greene's pace would most likely have giv en him top spo t overall - had th e race been on e lap longer. As it was, th e Nov ato, California rider still managed to finish third overa ll a nd firs t in class. On the start, Greene vau lted to the front by the final turn of the first lap.
