By David Procida SVNNYM EAD, CA, MAR. 20 Rou nd one of the eight race Cal ifornia Classic Series kic ked off today a t DeAn za Cycle Park with G rayson Hart taking the win in the 250cc Pro class. . When th e gate fell for mo to one it was Pro-Cycle/ Z Raci ng 's Todd Ca mpbell who was first rider to the top of th e hill and into th e first turn wit h Ka wa saki-mounted Micha el Pr eston and Terry Varner Racing 's Ron T u rner hot on his heels . Ca mpbell immed ia tel y began to o pe n u p a lead as Turner was pu tt in g pressure o n P resto n. T he rest of th e pack began to so rt th emsel ves \ o u t as Ma lcolm Smi th / Hi lls bero H onda 's G rayson Hart was the next rider past the scor ing to wer, followed bya ha rd cha rg ing Craig Davi s on a Yamaha support YZ250. O n la p three. Ca mpbell fell in th e downhi ll co rner, allowi ng Pr eston to ta ke the lead. T he standi ngs took another ju mp on th e next lap when T u rner a nd Hart came arou nd with Pr eston now in th i rd, fi gh tin g o ff Da vi s. M ik e Brown p ull ed up to th e rear fender o f Davi s and mad e it a three rider freigh t trai n a nd p u lled a lo ngs ide Da vis o n numb er ous occasio ns . Davi s tactfull y held hi s grou nd as th e th ree riders began to close on th e leaders. Davis closed and passed H art on ly 'to have H art repass him as Turner beg an to ope n up so me breathing room. The top five positions rem ained intact for the next few laps until under th e white flag Davis found a line arou nd Presto n to finish third. In mot o two Campb ell again went into th e lead with H art and Brown ·rid ing in his sha dow. At th e start of la p two H art too k th e lead with Campbell being pressured by Brown and Preston. Davis was running a d istant fourth with U lf J ohansson a nd Andy Northrup o n hi s ta il. On la p four T u rner mad e some fancy moves a nd was no w ru n ni ng in fo u rt h behind H art. Brown , a nd Campbell. Turner held o n to th e positio n for two laps before succu m bing to Dav is' charges. Preston was Davis' nex t victim . wh ile up fro n t Brown was now in the lead With H art looking for a line to repass him.
