Franklin Rose RIVERSIDE, CA, MAR . 19 A Saturday only 14-race schedule made for a full da y of racing at round three of the 1988 ARRA Series . (This would have been the round four, but the january 17th date at Willow Springs was rained out. ) A bike developed an oil leak during an early morning practice session, spreading oil from turn two through tum 7A, so after a 45 minute delay, things were underway. It was th e third race of the da y, 305 Modified Production and Formula Three combined, and things were already starting to get hot and heavy. From the starting line on, the battle to the checkered flag was between joe Solis on a Kawasaki 250 Ninja and ARRA number three, Kiyo Watanabe riding a Yamaha TZ125. Solis was outbraking Watanabe at the entrance to turn seven, with Watanabe repassing Solis between turns eight and nine. On the white flag lap Solis tried drafting Watanabe out of turn nine, but the Yamaha rider held off the Kawasaki rider for the Formula Three and overa ll win . Solis took second overall , but that was good enough for a first place in the 305 Mod. Prod. class and the contingency money from Kawasaki. O n the grid, race number five, Formulas One and Two. looked to be the fastest of the day . Former ARRA number one, jim Poet on the Dr. john's/Michael's Cycle Works/ GP Products-sponsored Suzuki GSXRlIOO; number two, Kenny Kopecky (just back from Daytona) riding a GSXRlIOO; and Kawasaki Ninja 750R-mounted Peter Christensen , who had already turned lap times of 1:34.77 earlier in the 750cc Superstreet race , were all ready to do battle. The green flag dropped and Kopeck y and Poet were side-by-side into turn one with Christensen hot on their heels , By th e tim e the pack got through turn six, Poet was in the lead. Kent Kunitsugu was out in front in the Formula Two class, and by lap two Kunitsugu 's Honda Hurricane was out to a huge lead over the res! or the F-2 bikes . On lap three, Poet held on through turn seven with Christensen on his tail, turning lap times of I:33.01 at 99.09 mph. In th e esses on lap four , Christensen passed Poet and the two of them began to pull away from th e rest of the pack. By lap six , th e leaders had 20 seconds over third p lace Nathan Ladd, and started to lap some of th e F-2 riders.
