Hall led the opening lap o f the B Superbike o n his 600cc Hurr icane with Duckworth a nd Tim Ledbetter (G SXR 750) in hot pursuit. Ha ll and Duckwort h put so me di stance o n Ledbett er who was now battling for third with Novice Suzuki rider Steve Smith. Hall 's Hurricane was we ll sui ted for th e tight 1.3-m ile circ ui t ena b ling h im to brake later th an Duckworth for the co m ers. Du ckworth rode well, however, and stayed within striki n g distance of Hall. On th e fifth lap Duckworth ro cketed past Hall on the sh ort back straight to put hi s Yamaha in the lead. Hall outbraked Duckworth once more to regain the lead but th e Yamaha 's power advan tage was too much an d Duckw orth went on to win his fir st Expert ra ce. Duckworth beat Hall again in the new Open Formula class (com bin in g last year's A Superbike and Formula One classes) th is time winnin g $70 in p rize m oney from WERA. In th e firs t mota Brad Proctor o n a Yamaha sponsored by Yamaha o f L umberton grabbed. th e h oleshot, followed by Steve Childress o n a Kawasaki, Jim Neese on a Suzuki a nd Vicki Reynolds o n a Yamaha. Surratt soars at Glen Helen MX By David Procida SAN BERNARDINO, CA, MAR. 20 Willie Su rratt took th e overa ll win today in the 250cc Pro class a t Gl en H elen Raceway, bu t had to work for it as a determined Kenny Zahrt kept h im hone st. Zahrt pulled th e hol esh ot with Surratt, Bob Kline a n d T im T elfo rd close beh in d . Surra tt immedi ately began ' pressuri ng Zahrt a nd th e two riders began to p ull a way fro m th e res t of the class. Surratt attem p ted to p ut a pass o n Zahrt with every co rn er th ey e n tered wi th Za hrt hol ding h im off successfu lly everytim e. On the fourth la p Zahri lost th e fro n t end of h is Honda in a corn er, fell over o nto Surra tt a nd bo th rid ers went down with Klin e goi ng to th e o utside a nd into the lead. Sur ratt was up qu ickl y, . restarted a nd in pursui t o f th e leader. Within two la ps Surratt had ca ugh t a nd p assed Kline for th e lead and rn oto win with Kline taking seco nd a nd T elford in third. Mot o two was a runawa y for Surra tt wi th Zahrt running in second h oldin g Kline a t ba y. The runn ing orde r staye d intact th e wh ol e race and Surratt took the overall win with a perfect I-I score, while Kline went 2-3 for seco n d pl ace money. Barnett made the seco nd mo ta cri tica l wi n hi s for the overa ll as PVK 's Scott Stra ngio ro u nded out the to p three slots. A good showing of O pen Intermedi ates made for so me excitin g ac tion as G eorge Andrews took th e overall with a 1-3 da y. Ron Gilbert placed seco nd with a 3-2 score and Tom Webb received third aft er taking a seco n d mot a win. Lori H edstrom, ridin g h er pink fram ed /red e n g i ned Mission Yamaha YZ250, d ominated the Women's Intermediate class while Jeanette Howell an d Val eri e Roberts dueled for the Women 's Novice class win. Roberts got th e drop on Howell on th e open in g lap of th e first moto and held h er off for seven of the race's eight laps before being passed a few comers from th e checkered flag. In
