Kawasaki mounted Shawn Waring
battled a ll day with Alex T ra vaglune
th en he finally ra n away wi th the
win in th e 80cc class o f the scra m bles
held a t the Mudslin gers track.

lead in heat o ne followed b y Vy-Lam
Nguyen , Peter Hein es, Guy Gi ll and
Todd Phillips. Sum merh ill slipped
in the woods a nd restarted in fourth
place. Nguyen took over the lead a nd
went a ll the wa y. At th e end it was
Nguyen, Summerhill , who worked
hi s way all the way back to th e front ,
th en Gill, H eines, Phillips, Brian
Cross and th e o the rs.
In th e seco nd heat race Travaglune
got the initial lead a head of Waring
and season point lead er Ryan Anfterso n. Beh ind th e front running trio
was Andy Sandell , Brad Hagseth,
Larry Toth and the others. Waring
was all over Travaglune for three
laps before he finally made a pass
sti ck. Anderson spun out entering
th e woods but restarted just before
Sandell could get by. The two of
them rod e super close for two more
laps before Anderson pulled a lead.
Meanwhile Waring had put 35 yards
on T ravagl une. At the checkered flag
it was Waring, Travaglune, Anderson, Sandell, Toth and Jeff Wallis.
In the A main once again it was
Travaglune, Waring, Anderson and
th en Nguyen , Summerhill, Hagseth
and th e others. The trio up front .ran
close for three laps before Waring
took over th e lead and slowly walked
awa y. Anderson was all over Travaglu ne for severa l laps but they
finall y spread out al so . At the
checkered flag it was Waring, Trava glune , Anderson , Summerhill ,
Nguyen , Sandell , Hagseth a nd the
rest of the 80s.
In moto o ne of th e Old Timers
class Vic Newmann got the star t
a head of R. W. Marshall, Dick Stidham and Russ Fletch er, who had
mechanical problems a nd retired for
the day. Coming through the woods
. on lap two Marshall stalled it and
restarted back in the pack. Stidham
started to reel in Newmann and with
one lap lO go he was all over his rear
tire. Newmann held on as the checkered flag came out. Stidham was still
dose but Marshall was back 50 yards.

moto two followed by Stidham and

Jim Deford took th e Vet Novi ce class
win in SMX motocross acti on a t
Perris Raceway.

Deford put his Yamaha out in
front and held off all challengers in
moto one. Chris Per ez a nd Bob
Zimmon stayed dose the entire moto
aboard Hondas but couldn't find a
line around Deford. At th e checkered
flag it was Deford all th e way with
the win, followed by Perez, Zimmon,
H onda-mounted Wa yn e Cummings
and rounding out th e top five was,
Yamaha-mounted Norman Schiel.
In moto two Zimmon got th e early
lead but Deford gave his Yam aha
everythi n g he co u ld to reel the
Honda pilot in. Ch asin g Deford was
Cummings and behind him a battle
wa ged for fourth th rough seventh,
with Perez being pressured by J im
Stentz, Blaine Jackl in a nd Francis
McG ee. The tri o rema ined beh ind
Perez, but at times no mor e 'tha n a
wh eel 's length. Up front, Zimmon
took the checkered flag ahead of
Deford, Cummings, P erez a n d
Stentz. When the results were tallied
up Deford's 1-2 tally gave him the
overall win, with Zimmon 's 3-1
ea rn ing second. Perez 's 2-4 was good
for third place honors.
In th e Vet Intermediate class Ken
Dickson convincingly won the first
rnoto but could onl y m~nage a third
in moto two for seco nd ove ra ll.

Roberts and Ed J ens en . Foidel a nd
Browning main tained a large lead
over their Intermedi ate co mrades to
th e finish to nab the 1-2 posit ions.

Rob erts third. J erem y Sko ka n finished fourth and Chris Clark fifth
at mot a 's end.

moto while J en sen and Rudge waged
a brutal battle for the overall in the
Intermediate portion. Foidel opened
up an l l-se cond lead in th e motoand
cruised to the fini sh to tak e a I-I win
and top cash payoff at the completion wh ile seco nd went Browning's
wa y. Rudge prevailed for th e Intermediate win after I-I fin ishes with
J ensen (2-2), Roberts (3-3), Steve
Pantich (6-4) and Clark (5-5) filling
o u t the top five.
The 125cc Beginner . class was
nearly as exciting a nd gated 27 riders
for th e first moto thriller. Several
rid ers had their turns leading the
cra sh-ma rrred race, but in the end
it was Brett Brashears taking the
checke red nag in first o ver Eri c
Cummin gs , Roman R o ss, Matt
Galde a nd Ken Harwell.
Mot a two had Brash ears a nd Galde
lead th e field into turn o ne a hea d
of a maj or pil eup. Wh en the dust
clea red, Gal de a nd Brash ears were 12 followed by Ross, Mik e Nova arid
. Cu mmi ngs. Brash ears did a ll he
co uld 'to reel in Galde for a double
mota sweep, but to no ava il as Galde
took the moto win. Brash ears' 1-2
ta llies were enough 10 tak e first
overall followed by Ga lde's 4- 1 a nd
the 3-3 performances o f Ross.
Aaron Boehmer ea rne d a hardfoug h t wi n in th e 250cc Int ermedi at e
class, which ra n co m bined with the
Open Intermed iates. Gene Sawtell
made things m iserabl e for Boehmer
in both motos, rid ing impressively
in eac h o u ting. But in th e later stages
o f both mot os, Boehmer prevailed for
a I-I win. Sawtell (2-2), J ay Vice (44), Frank McKuhn (7-3) and Chad
Egge (5-5) rounded out the top five
overall.
One of th e largest fields of Old
Timers were on hand for a huge
combined Expert/Junior/Intermediate swa pfest. Cagiva-mounted Bob
Leach , riding for Gary Foster's G&G
Cycle, took com ma nd of both motos
aft er come -fro m -behind rides in each
outing. Lea ch 's competition came
from Honda riders J im Parks and
Bill Naylor, seco nd a nd third with
2-2 a nd 3-3 performances. Bill Newman won the Intermediate class and
Bill Ogilvie took th e Junior portion.

Li sa Peterson overcame a midpack
start to overtake Mashburn Kawa saki' s Mindy Smith. Smith jumped out
to a n ea rly lead as her Kawasaki
started on the fir st kick. Right on
her heels was SCR pilot Bonnie
Warch a nd the pack tightly bunched
up behind with stu n twoman Dana
Evenson being pressured by Brenda
