California. . diate class Honda rider Jared Ham bly took the holeshot and never looked back. Honda rider Heath Kirtland was in second with Kawasaki rider Jeff Dement moving up fast. Dement took over second place fc>r three laps until he went down, giving second place back to Kirtland. At the finish line it was Hamby first , Kirtland second, Honda rider Clint Carlton third and Dement fourth. Mota two action saw Dement tak e th e holeshot with Honda rider Tim . Hodes close behind. Hodes pushed Dement hard then took over the lead by lap three. At the finish it was Hodes first, Dement second and Honda-mounted Cl int Carlton third. The overall for the day went to Hodes first, Dement second and Carlton third. . The Mini Open class found Tim H odes in th e lead a t the start of mota o ne. Dem ent held on to second place for three lap s but was passed by H amby a nd Steve Olson on la p four. At th e fin ish it was Hodes fir st, Hamby seco nd a nd Ol son third. In mota two Dem ent charge d out for ·the lead with Hodes hot in pursuit a nd Ol son in close third. On the fin al lap H odes charged a hea d of Dem ent 10 take over the first pl ace po sition and Kawasaki rider J ason Edwards moved into third pl ace. Ri ck P inney p roved he was the man to beat by grabbing the holeshot in the first 12Scc Expert moto , Pinney had hi s han ds fu ll with GregClarke o n his Schwein's-sponsored . Honda . T odd Stith , Don n ie Melchior and Steve Simpson were in a hot battle for th ird. J ohn Su lews ki was charging hard and a fter cha rg ing th rough the pack crac ked th e top . five and chased Melchior a nd Stith across the finish lin e. P in ney and Clarke had a good lead over the pack 10 finish first and second. The second mota saw P inney run away from the pack. Stit h , Clarke, Melchior a nd Ted Orr were in a heated battle for seco nd whe n Melchior broke free a nd set a u t 10 ree l in Pinney. Melchior rode a trem endo us race only 10 hav e mechanical p roblems when Pinney was in strikmg di stance. Pinney cruised home for an easy win followed by Stith, Clarke, Orr and John Kernan. The first 2S0cc Expert mota saw Ri ck P in ney sitting on the line next 10 younger brother Scott. Wh en th e gate fell the two Pinney brothers ro cketed up the sta rt hill with Melchior at their side. The trio set a blistering pa ce and soon th e rest of the pack was a fading memory. Michael Morgan, Michael Crocker and Michael Griffin set up th e race for the fo u rth place spot. R ick 'P in ney was ab le to out-duel Melch ior on the last lap with Scott Pinney watching from third. Morgan and Crocker finished out th e top five in th e first round. . In round two Rick Pinney again grabbed th e hol esh ot to mak e it four In a row. Melchior and Sco tt P inney were in a nothe r heated race trying 10 stay with th e leader. Crocker was a ble to ge t by Mor gan in this moto a nd that was th e order until th e chec kered flag fell at th e end of 10 laps. The Open Expert class pi tted Chip Anacker agai nst some hungry amateur riders. Anack er grabbed th e hol eshot and never looked ba ck . Tommy Willett, Dave Posten and Sco tt Pinney were in a match for second place. By th e halfway point Willett had powered his Honda into second over Dave Posten on his Cycle Five-sponsored Kawasaki. Scott P inney grabbed fourth over Bill Sharff. . In the second mota Anacker again ran away from the pack from the onset of the race'. Willett was in second and had to make a pit stop which let Scott Pinney into the runner-up spot. Jay Dean also got by while Willett was sidelined.
