Bunnel blitzes Milwaukee Ice Races By Gordon Lunde MILWAUKEE, WI, FEB. 6-7 Nick Bunnell won the 250cc Amateur a nd Sen ior classes o n Sa turday a nd th en retu rned Su nday for the honors in the Open Ama teur class a t the Ken osh a Mot orcycle Club's ice races a t Bro wn Deer Park. Bunnel put in solid races, leading by over 10 bike len g th s at the finish of all the events he won. Mart y Bush man put hi s Ron Severso n /S hoe i Helmets/Suburban H -D spo nsored Suzuki in to the number two spot in all the races followed in by Jim Sumner. The combined I25-200cc races saw Greg Dickenson clean up on both days. Dickenson never had a serious cha llenge as he p ut hi s Kawasa ki in front to stay ea rly in each ra ce. The numb er t wo sp o t wa s a battl e between Mike Peters a n d St ev e Giuntoli with th e latter surviving both da ys for the position. Domke SAN ANTONIO . TX, FEB. 21 Nicolas. Esp ana came to Goodtimes Motorsports Park from Mexico City, and took first in th e 125cc Intermediate class. Javier Coso, also from Mexico City, follow ed Espa na hom e in second overa ll. By Derryl Anderson GRAND MO UNT, WA, FEB. 14 Rudy Sm ith's 2-1 score narrowly held off Eddie Gerrish 's 1-2 to take th e win in th e hotly contested 250cc class of the rough scra mbles held a t the Mudslingers tra ck. The fir st heat race was wi ld as everyo ne tri ed to negotiate the 1800 corner right after the start. Gerrish too k th e lead ahea d of Or in Bray, Ala n Evans, T om Rowl and , Bill J ohnson and Sm it h. Sm ith ins tan tly reacted to h is poor sta rt and passed fo ur r ide rs before everyo ne had started to string o u t. By lap three Gerr ish had taken h is Paulson 's Kawasa ki to a 40-yard lead bu t Smith was slow ly reeling him in . Gerrish rode flawless a nd took the chec kered Ilag with Smith a litt le ways behind. Next was Evans, ' Bray, Pat Schouweiler, Rowland and Bryan Pear son. Perr y T onsgard go t th e ini tia l lead in heat twofoll owed by Ken Ruston, J ohn Wh itmore, Marsh all Faure and J ohn Cla yton. Faure moved up o ne spo t by lap two a nd Rushton fell do wn by th e finish lin e. With two laps to go Faure, wh o had worked his way up to seco nd, took over the lead a nd slowly disappeared from the pac k. At the chec kered flag it was Faure by 100 yards, then Tonsgard, Cl ayto n, Wh itm ore, Erni e Trueso n a nd the othe rs. In the main Gerish go t th e early lead a hea d of Schouweil er, Smith, Bray. Evans and rhe o th ers. mith was in to second by lap two and pushed Gerrish for two more la ps before getting by.' mith a nd Gerrish left th e rest of the pack, a nd at the fin ish it was Smi th , Gerrish , Evans, Bra y, Schouweiler , T on sgard, Trueson and th e o the rs. Sch nitzer bu ilt u p a 30-yard lead but Lla pitan started to shave that d istan ce to abo ut 10 yards just befor e th e fini sh. At the final flag it was Schnitzer with th e win over Llapitan , W a g~on er, Dick Stidha m , Delan, R.W. Marshall and Jay Col e. . In th e fin al moto Schnitzer got the lead over Llapitan , Wa~gon er, Stidham a nd th e o the rs. Co le go t a bad start but was co mi ng o n strong. Stidha m went down just as Waggo ner came by throwing away hi s th rottle grip in the mud. T avi s won both th e Veteran 2 main event and Open Expert final , beating Dave Bostrom both tim es. Rod Lake had what appeared to be th e best lines in th e Vintage classes, having won both heat races, but while leading th e H eavyweight division fin al , he hi ghsid ed h is H o nda and left for th e da y with a crac ked shou lder, hoping it wouldn't a ffec t h is Dayto na V III ta ge performan ce. Bill Ripley took up the slack and wo n both Vintage mains on hi s H ap J o n es/ Shoei /Bult aco West Pur" sa ngs. J eer Gabhart contin ued to domina te the 60cc mini portion of the San J ose program , with Helder Alvernaz ta king seco nd over Shawn R ussell a nd J ari d Banks. Gary Mil ewski led every la p in the Veteran I race wi th Fred Faltersack fin ishing second af ter Lynn George sto pped early, feari ng an emp ty fuel ta nk. Bob Meiring took the thi rd spo t over J ed H ill. Jim Mahoney led ear ly in th e Vetera n 2 final on the Mahoney Motor s/Team Bench Ra cers Honda, but dropped to th ird at the chec kered flag. Gary Mil ewski claim ed a wire-towire win in th e 500cc Jun ior main eve nt o ver Jim O 'Conner and Armando Alvemaz, while Tavis led all la ps in the Open Expert final wit h Bostrom a close second over the Rev. Fran k Nye. Mark Bakhi t had his hands ' full with Mic hele DiSilva in the 250cc Novi ce round. DiSilva pressured ha rd . but the sli ck track-didn't len d : itself to DiSilva 's two-stro ke Yamaha.
