Castellanos', wh ose eq uip ment is bea u tifu ll y prep ar ed a nd exce p tio na lly fast , has been racing for severa l year s a nd is th e man to bea t a t th e Autodromo de Monterr ey. At th e start of the B Superbike race , Cas tella nos a nd Cratg Gl eason were o u t fro nt toge ther. Gleason's Suzuki GSXR750 was a t a power disadvantage to Castell anos' bike, but he made up th e difference with late brakin g. Every ti me G leason got by, he was re-passed by Castel lanos who event ua lly pulled a slight lead to take th e win. Ro bert Brad law on a Honda 600 H u rr ica n e circulated a lo n e beh in d the two leaders, but well a head of the pack of 750's behind him . to net th ird place. T he Autodromo is located just o u tside the tow n of Monterrey, Mexico, and features a deluxe scoring to wer, styled like' a tire, that arches over the beginning of the main straight. The faci lities at the tr ack a re ni ce, refres h me nts a re in expensive, a nd the racetrack itse lf is well -surfaced a nd fast. T he tra ck is 1.8 mi les in leng th with a dogleg lead in g into a mini-bowl a t the end of the main straig ht . Exi ti ng th is de cr ea sin g ra d i us co r ner go i ng uphill , the track is a seri es of esses tha t allow for a steady increase in speed unti l you ge t to th e main bowl which leads back o nto the main straight. T here are no armco barriers present ; on ly desert. In th e last race of th e da y, Form u la One, Castell an os too k the lead wi th fell ow Mexican Gui llermo Villarreal in second on a green , white and red Suzuki GSXR. Villarrea l is a crowd favorite and is known locall y as " EI Ronco" ; the spec ta tors are very vocal a nd enthusiasti c. Ronco was running an insp ired race in front of Gl eason until h is mo to r began to sour, allo wing Gl eason to overtake him. Tonight, T yler carved to I-I wins in the combined 250cc Pro /Interm ediat e class despite heavy pressure from Sa lem 's Rod Keller. H onda-m ounted Keller b laze d into th e lead a t th e drop of the gate in moto one with Sh an e Donaca, Keith DiBr in o, T ress Belcher a nd Rick Robert s giving chase; T yler was bu r ied mid-pa ck . T yler carved th rough hea vy tr affi c a boa rd th e Renton T oyota-sponsor ed Yamah a, and by the third la p had over taken Kell er for th e lead . T yler too k th e moto win. Keller fin ished second, good for th e Intermedia te portion win with McKunn , Belcher, Donaca, Roberts a nd DiBrino in tow. Interm edi ate win while McKun (22) a nd Belch er (3-3) followed. The Junior win went to Donaca after posting 1-I ta llies. The next best ac tio n to th e Pro contest was the I25cc Int ermed ia te mo tos. H onda jockey Ernie Rober ts had a mote -lo ng battle wi th Kawa- , sa ki rider Chris C lark. Ro bert s prevailed in the.first moto with Clark fin is hi ng second and Bill R u sh , thi rd . Roberts' 1-2 postings were enough for second; Rush was third.
