The Sen ior class win went to Tom J acobs. J acobs led all of the laps in the heat race. J acob s pulled the holesho t in the, main a nd stayed ou t in front the entire'race. Du gan ma de a six th lap pass to move in to the ru nner-up slo t. Mike Hornyan rou nded out the top three. Roger Durkee a nd Clint Vahsholtz wo n the 250cc Pro an d P ro -Am classes, respec tively. . Nicky H ayden began th e Amat eur raci ng with 'a win in th e 5 Icc class. T ommy Hayden took th e 65cc race, wh ile Brian Strong edge d Ken CooIbeth in the 85cc di vision. Geo rge Pri ce and Stro ng du eled th e entire race in teh I25cc Ama teur race with Price th e winner. Price came back in th e 250cc clas s to beat La rry Peagram and Bob Milom. T he 600cc Amateur final was all Peagra m, while Bart Schm u lba ch passe d David Flowers for second. Flowers . came back to run away wi th the Senior class , w in n i n ~ o ver Ken McConnell and J eff Chisharn. T he 16- a nd l7-y ear-old Pro-Ams started off the P ro racing portion of the program with Clint Vahs ho ltz leadi ng all the way. Jason Fletcher worked his way throug h the pack to take second. T he 250cc P ro final was all Roger Durk ee. H e led each of the eigh t laps in the fina l over T ed Boody and Kris Kiser. T he largest field was again in the 600cc Pro division, which boas ted 30 riders. T he 600cc heat races went to Steve More hea d, Don Wilson , Villella and Keith J acobsen . The first q ua rter-fi na l had a lot of action wi th Robert Lewis sett ing the pace for David Miller and Morehead . Moreh ead /?ot into a vicio us tank slapper exit mg turn two and fell. Lewis took the win wi th Will Davis movin g around Mi ller for the last tran sfer to th e main . Villella make it look easy in the second q uarter-fi na l, fin is h ing ahead of T ed Bood y. T he thi rd quarter-fin al went to Rand y T ext er, who beat Bill Newkirk , and Keith J acob sen ra n away with the last quarter-final , fin ishi ng well ahead of Ken Coo lbeth. T he semi moved just the winners to th e fina l. Bob Sweeten got the ticket o ut of sem i o ne wh ile Morehead recovered fro m his heat race fall by winnin g semi two . . Villella cha rged to the front of j h e main event leaving all th e hardfought action behind him. Davis, Lewis and Bood y du eled over seco nd as Steve Morehead charged from h is second-ro w start. At the halfway poi n t, Ville lla was. in control with Davi s, Lewis, Morehead and J a y Skidmore behi nd. O ne lap later Bood y regained fifth . Most of the passing was finished at that poi nt, but Morehead continued to move up , takin g second fro m Davis on lap ei~h t. T he ex-pro mo to. cro sser used his skills to o utdistance Ma ll ow a n d th ird place , Betamounted Mike Cono ver a t wha t most co nsidered th e tou gh est event of th e year. Wh ile Moo re was win ning th e Master class Andre ' LaPorte bested the Intermedi at e class in hi s first rid e since mov ing u p from Amat eur. - Second pl ace fin isher Ga ry Wesson tied LaP orte o n observa tio n points but los t ou t in th e tie breaker on nu mber of clea ns. . Cycle Riders of Orlando rider Donald J ack s was the only other multiple win ner with first pl ace fini shes in Middl eweight G P and Mid dleweight Superbike. Shaw and teammate Bill Kell y started the 50 miler o n their Yam aha 1000 s wi th Kell y o u t in front. Rudolp h Von Lignau held down th ird p lace ' with J oh n Choat e in fo urt h. Sh aw and Kell y ma naged to stay within two bike lengths of each o ther as th ey took turns leading the field . Scot t Cantrell worked hi s way through the field aft er a bad start but cras hed. Ch oa te also wen t off his bi ke a t: over 140 mp h and brok e his collarbo ne and hi s shoulder. Greg Esser wor ked hi s way past all bu t the fron t three rid ers. At th e flag it was Sha w by himself as . Kell y had dropped o u t. w it h mech an ical pr ob lems. Von Lignaur was seco n d, and Gl enn Carlson fini shed four bi ke lengths in front of Esser. New ton H eston 'led th e GTU riders to the checkered flag by a wide margin as he wen t wire-to -wire. Bill Savain , David Kamps, Robby Costa, Mike Barn es, and Mi ke Lehning also fin ished on th e lead lap. The only cha llenge H eston had came from J ohn Fran ce before he crashed in the esses on la p three. . In th e Li ghtweight G P it was all Esser. Esser had an easy run to th e checkered flag over Bill Kran enb erg , Sta n Pollock and Mike Sp ra dlin/ In H eav ywei ght Su pers ports Anth on y Weadon went o u t in front of Shaw and Cur t Kicklighter, but Weado n was black-flagged on th e th ird la p with an oil leak . Bru ce Osborn slipped by Shaw and Kickligh ter as did Todd Hunt. At the flag it was. Osborn, H unt, Shaw and Kickl igh ter, wh ile J ohn Cox led the novice riders as he fin ished fifth overa ll. In Middleweight Superbi ke actio n Don ald J acks pu lled the holeshot and never looked bac k. Heston 'and Mark Pastir battled for second th e who le eight laps foll ow ed by Dan Warren and Mark Dalton. David Kamps and Robb y Costa battled for first p lace in th e No vice class with Kamps comi ng o u t on top. In H eavyweight Superbike action Kevin Blai s sh pped aro und Mark Ch in , Gl enn Carl son and T odd H unt o n his way to first p lace. At th e chec kered flag Blai s was 25 seconds ahea d of the field. J o hn Cost a led n o vi ce rider s Na tha n Donoh ew a nd Dan Farley for th e first six la ps wih Don oh ew closin g th e ga p but not getting by. . Sh aw and Ca nt rell battled for the lead in Un li mi ted Superbike actio n wtih Shaw com ing o ut on top. Both were followed by Ch in, Glenn Carl son, and Von Li ngau.
