Krause captures King of the Desert By Anne & Tom Van Beveren EL CENTRO, CA, FEB. 2 1 T eam Kawasaki's Paul Krause sw ept th e field a t th e 8th Annual King of the Desert race, averaging almost 60 mph through blinding dust to overa ll AMA /District 38' s most prestigous even t. Over 150 miles o f hard-on-the-gas terrain , th e flying KX500 pilot co u ld no t be touched. Krause pushed hi s bik e into th e lead just three mil es from th e start and never looked ba ck. " It feels good to win this race," Krause said after ca p turin g his firstever King of the Desert crown. "Last year I made it all but abou t the last 10 mi les, then I broke, so it 's grea t . to come bac k and win it this time." Mo re tha n 250 racers lined u p on Ancient Dry Lake for this year's start and with $1000 up for grabs in the Open Pro division a lone, racing among the Pro class entries promised to be fast and furious. Team Green 's Ted Hunnicutt got theholeshot as th e banner dropped at 9.30 a.m. and led the way off the lake bed and into 'th e five-mil e start in g section. Krause was right on his tail and flew past to grab th e number one spot just a ft er th e frontrunners clea red the video check a co uo le of miles into th e race. T he Team Green du o headed across An cient Dry Lake and into th e firsl o f five loops around the 31.5m ile co u rse. Pushing hard in th ird wa s District 38's number one Open class racer , Steve Walker , aboa rd a Honda CR500. Kawasaki 's Mark Vanscourt wa s running fourth, narrow ly holding off Yam aha 's Dan Ashcraft for the lead in th e 250cc division. Sixth overall wa s in th e hands of CR250 pilot Joey Lane. Also high in th e ea rl y runn ing was th e reigning Kin g of the Desert , T eam H usqvar ria 's Garth Sweetland, and Tom Moen, th e only Vet Pro en tered in th e ra ce. Krause made the m ost of his number one position , powering th rough th e seven -mile section that led to check one al ongside Evan H ewes Highway and then turned west to cross under the rai lroad lines twice before tackling the high-speed road leading into chec k three at -the 21-mile mark. From check three th e co u rse ran through a section o f wh oops 10 th e edge o f Ancient Dry Lake and th en made a sh ort circu it through th e mud hills before doubling ba ck to th e dr y lake for th e run down pit ro w. "T he co u rse wa s long a nd it beat o n yo u co ns ta nt ly - th er e was n owhere to rest a t all," said Krause. " O nce we hit loop two a nd started to ca tch up with th e lapped riders yo u co u ld n't see a ny th in g because of th e dust. The rest of th e race was just hanging on and avoiding lappers." One of th e first rid ers 10 fall victim to th e dust was Van scourt. " I was just getting ready to pass Steve Wa lker for third overall and I hit something really hard and went over the bars," said Vanscourt. " I cou ldn 't see a thing in all the dust. " Desp ite dust a n d traffic, Krause had stretched h is lead to almost two minutes as the frontrunners swept . through home check o n their way into the third loo p , and was looking strong as he neared th e halfway point. Hunnicutt was ch asin g hard in second, with Walker half a minute behind in third; Ashcraft. Swee tland and Vanscourt rounded out the top SIX. But Ash craft's fourth place wasn 't official. In his seco nd pass through a specia l su pe rcross sect ion , Ashcraft had taken a line that a llowed him to skirt so me stu tte r bumps but still s tay in side th e co u rse - ma r k i ng banners, According to AMA/ D istric t 38 President, Otis Fudpuck er , Ash craft's fan cy wh eelwo rk went against instructions gi ven at th e riders' meeting an d Fu dpucker penalized Ash craft o ne full lap for each time he skirted th e bumps, which resulted in a three-lap penalty. "I told the riders not to go around the side o f the su percro ss co ur se. We went over it a bo u t three or four times at th e meeting an d I told them they 'd be dropped a lap if th ey did ," Fudpucker said. "I think it sti nks, " said Ashcraft. " I didn't h ear him say anything about going through that section. As far as I'm concerned I was between th e banners so that means 1 was on the course. " A promising run by third-placed Steve Walker a lso ran into trouble just before the halfway point.
