Shortly in to the mo ta Ra nk passed Shoema ker for fo urth, th en Shoem aker tr ied to repass Rank off the following jump but cou ldn 't get th e drive needed. On the third la p Ran k dove underneath Marten and forced him ou t of his line and into a huge tractor tire and over ' the bars. Marten quickly got up and underway in IOth. Benke too k the wi n fo llowed by C lark, Ronk, Shoemaker a nd Carter. Ben ke was th e overa ll winner and placed second in the series, whi le Clark was seco nd but capture d th e series win. Ro nk fin ished third in both the overall and the series. _ Whitl ock proved th at his 1987 T ra ns -Ca l Se ries C ha mp io ns h i p wasn' t just luck as he won bot h 500cc Int ermediate mo tos a nd wrapped up the Go lden Sta te titie in the class. . At the start of th e first mo to G rant Michae lson holesh o t Whitlock, J oel Chris tense n , J ason Ben acka a n d R obbie Lo vas. Whitl ock quickl y passed Mich aelson a nd im media tely started to pu ll away. On th e seco nd lap J im Kuntz moved to fourth after a seventh p lace start then slipped into third aft er o ut- braking Christen sen in a turn. Whi le Kuntz was ' rapidly pi cking up positions Ricky Lutz broke i nto th e to p fi ve afte r p a ssing Benacka. The last pass of th e mo to saw Lutz pass Christen sen a few turns from th e finish . Whitlock and hi s Pro Cir cuit/Maxim a-sponsored H onda too k th e win. Michaelson was second foll owed by Kuntz, Lutz and Christensen. Second moto action saw David Bagwell lead Whitlock, L u tz, Sergio Fernandez a nd David Rosen aro und th e first turn . Whi tlock wasted no time in passing Bagwell a nd again started to open u p his lead. O n th e second lap Kun tz moved into th ird wi th Michaelson mak in g h is way to fifth. At th is point if Kuntz cou ld pass both Bagwell and Wh itlock he wo u ld get second overa ll in the ser ie s, Kuntz p ro ceeded to p a ss Bagwell but couldn 't make a dent o n the gap separating him a nd Whi tloc k. When th e checkered flag came o u t Whitlock took the win, th e overall and the series champ io nship , a long with a Suzuki Q uad. Kuntz was second in both the moto a nd the o verall but finished third in the series, wh ile Michaelson was third overall and claimed second in th e ser res. R&D Suzuki 's Budd y Antunez swep t both mo tos to wrap up the ti tle in the 80cc Expert class. First mota acti on saw Derek Na tVig get the holesh o t a hea d of Pete P ian tanida, Antunez, Brian Ro th and Bria n Swink. In the th ird turn Na tvig cras hed and handed Pian tanida the lead, but Antunez and Swink quickly sho t to th e front of the pack with Dana Wiggins taki ng th ir d. H alfway into the race Swin k star ted to pressure Antunez and Antunez, u naccus to med to pressure, soo n lost his lead. Swink held onto firs t for ov er a la p until he sta ll ed hi s Kawasak i and surrendered the lead ba ck to Antunez. But ch Sm ith was now running fourt h wit h T ommy Clow ers fifth , but Smi th soo n started to have motor prob lem s with h is Suzuki wh ich later caused h im to DN F. Ant unez went o n to take th e win followed by Swin k, Clo wers, Wiggins and J oel Albrech t. . At th e sta rt of the final mota Antunez go t the holesho t over Clowe rs , Sw in k, Wi ggins a nd Ro th . Swink im mediately passed Clowers and charged after Antunez, setting th e stage for an aweso me ba ttle.
