Bennett tops Oklahoma Trials By Rich Allman Hawkins blisters Swamp Fox Enduro By Marvin Grant CHARLESTON, SC, JAN. 24 R a n d y Hawkins do m ina ted the SETRA sanctioned 16th Annua l Swamp Fox Enduro, sponsored by the Family Riders Motorcycle Club. T he event was held in the Francis Marion National Forest with coopera tion fro m the U.S. Forest Service and drew a multi-state contingent of riders. Hawkins lost eight points to overall the run in a convincing win to beat SETRA and other National AA riders including Alan Gravitt, - J eff Russell , Kevin Hines, Bryan Adams and Mitch McRee. SAND SPRINGS, OK, JAN. 24 Monty Bennett of Pampa, Texas, rode his sized-down Montesa to first place in the Rookie class during the North eastern Oklahoma Trials Team's Jan uary event, held near Sand Springs. Pete Kinney too k second place in th e division. The Novice class had eig h t riders but none of them cou ld touch Todd Johnson of Kansas. Turning in some of the smoothest rides of the day Todd finished 14 points ahead of the Bolen brothers. Paul Bolen had 25 points and David Bolen po sted 38 points. The Amateur class witnessed the return of several old faces and one new competitor. Andre Laporte shows up every so often just to prove that age has nothing to do with low scores. He rode so calmly and collectedly you could swear he was just joyriding as he rode LO first, Showing flashes of brilliance, John Gudgel made his long-awaited co me back with second overall. The Intermediate class was an allOklahoma show with Stan Machart wrestling his Yamaha to first place overall with 46 points. Gary Wesson was just two points back in second place on his twin-shocker Montesa, Gerry Reitinger rounded out the top three with 5 1 points. The Expert class had Oklahoma's Ron Lee, on a borrowed bik e outru nning Arkansas' Gabe Mizell, 29 points to 41 points. T he Master class was won by Rob Toole with Shan Moore finishing in second place. Both of these riders will be contesting the Nationals this year. Charlie Mallow finished third overall. Gwinn wins Hell Hole Creek MX By Gary Crider COLUMBIA, sc, JAN. 17 Rou nd two of the 5th Annual AMA Carolina Winter MX Series saw Layton Gwinn overcome a first tu rn spi ll to clai m the 250cc B hono rs at He ll H ole Creek MX. Gwinn came back for an easy victory in Open Amateur racing while Todd Martin topped the 250cc C class. Due LO icy trac k and weather conditions, riders voted to run only one moto. Freewheeling Honda-backed Gwinn was knocked down in turn one at the start of the 250cc B ra ce but was quickly underway again. By the end of lap two Gwinn had closed the gap on leader David Eller to begin a spirited, wheel-banging dice. One lap later, Gwinn had taken the lead to stay while a goggle-less Eller faded LO a distant second. Many riders carne LO grief on a long downhill that was icy and very slick in spots. Gwinn had good control on the hill and explained, "I held the throttle steady arid kept the rear brakes on to hold the bike straight," Gwinn 's technique helped again ' in the Open Amateur class as he notched a runaway win over 1- W. Fender and Chad Viers. Series leader Alan Hens ley and Gene Hayes rounded out the top five. T he 250cc C rnoto saw Todd Martin rocket to the lead when the gate dropped. Wesley Elija h manuevered his Honda up from third and went by Marti n for the lead on lap two. Elijah's lead was short-lived, however, as he entered th e DNF column when h is bik e's chain locked th e rear wheel. F-Troop Mot or cycle Club laid out a challenging 11.6 mi le course, th at took mos t of the top experts 25 to 28 m inutes to complete a lap. McKenzie's good sta rt and fast pit sto p at the end of his second loo p , p lus co nsistently fast la p ti mes, assured hi m of first in the 250cc Expert class and first overall. Duke Dowell and Dean Joyner were close at the end of the second loo p . Coming in to the pit area they were over one minute beh ind and couldn't catch McKenzie before the end of the fourth and final lap.
