Ward fou ght back th ough , a nd a co u ple of turns la ter he repassed Lech ien. Near the end of th e lap Lechien too k th e lead aga in for good a n d moved away from Ward. H eal ey was th e next to pass Ward as he flew by into seco nd o n lap fOUT, th en Pascarella got by a fad ing Ward o n th e next circ ui t. By the third lap Ward . was beginning to fade aga in as firs t Smith gOI by and th en Pa scarella got him later on th e sa me lap. Manley was on th e m ove an d passed Ward a lap later. By rnid-moto Lec h ien had ope ned u p a good lead on Smith, while Pascarella trailed just a few secon ds 'behind in third. Yamaha-m ounted Paul J ones and H ea ley moved in o n Ward a n d bo th riders got by o n lap n in e. Smith was on th e gas a nd had closed th e ga p o n Lechien, b ut Lechien seemed to h ave little troub le spreading th e distance a cou p le of laps la ter . Man ley appeared to be the fastest rider o n the track as he m oved by and then awa y from Pascarell a for th ird. H eal ey moved' by J ones in the latter stages o f th e ra ce, a nd th e order was set. Lech ien cros sed the finish lin e with a lO-second lead on Smith, while Manley cha rged up a nd fin ished a close third. Pascarell a was fourth, and H ea ley came across fifth for fourth overa ll.
