Pounds seemed to ga in on Hicks up through la p eight, then fell back; he remained in second to the end of the mota. Truchinski lost th e seat on his bike in lap six and took almost a full lap retrieving it and holding it on with his knees. He eventually finished seventh, while Shackleford came in third. Pounds got the holeshot in moto two and led for six laps with H icks righ t on his exhaust pi pe every inch of the way. T he pressure finally got to Po unds and he went too high o n a soft berm near the end of la p seven. H ick s cut under a nd romped away for an easy win and overall first mon ey. After H icks went by, Pounds relaxed so m uc h he was a lmost caught by Shackleford , bu t snapped ou t of it in time to fin ish second agai n . Shack le ford to o k thi r d overall. Bubba Erickso n dominat ed th e 125cc Interm edi at es, stayi ng in the lead almost every inch of the way in both mo tos to take the overall. Ton y Qualls had :a second kind of da y. Qu all s sta rted last as the field left the. line for rnoto o ne a nd wor ked hard to finish second. In rno to two , Qualls was in the lead at the drop of the gate, but finished second again for second overall. Scott Murphy romped and stomped on the other 250cc Intermediates in rnoto one with another Kawasaki rider, De n n i s Urban , p icking up second. Murphy didn 't read the starter as well in mota two and came off the line in fourth. Todd Bro ussar d had the lead from the beginning to take the win, but had a poor first moto and had to settle for second overall. Murphy made a great charge in an unsuccessfu l attempt to ta ke the moto right at the flag . H is second was sti ll good for first overall. Tom Smith and George Andrews started 1988 exactly as th ey finished 1987 - chasing each other in the 500cc In term edi at e class. T his race bore a fam iliar pattern; Smith leading and finishing first and Andrews in a 'very tigh t second all the way to both flags. Dean J ennings got a good start o n the po ints for 1988 wi th a solid win in the 250cc Beginner even t. Pat Ball ard go t the lead and Je nnings was fourth off the li ne in mota one.
