Kaw asaki su p pan rider Moree went do wn a few turns after the stan of th e 125cc Youth mota , giving th e lead to Kawasaki of Aiken-bac ked Stacey Barnell. Barnell , in his first ti me o ut o n a full-sized machine soo n yielded to pressure from Mo ree. Once tI1 fr ont , Moree ra n away wit h th e win while Barnell fin ished a di stant second o ver Ned Blackwelser. Moree carne back for a n easy win in l25cc B ac tio n while Mike Fra ylick recovered from a first lap sp ill to fin ish second. Gear Racewearbacked David Eller took 250cc B honors. Matthew Fu ssell nailed the 125cc C holeshot and was never th reaten ed en ro ute to the win , " My holesh ot reall y surprised me," said Fussell, " I go t a lot more tr action th an I expec ted out 'of th e ga te. After th at , nob od y ever go t close to me." Virginia resident Steven Ra tcliff had to seu le for the runner-up slo t over Richard T ho mpson and Pa t Ell is. The closest race of the da y came .in the 250cc/O pe n A cla ss as Gary Brantley grabbed the lead with SCOll Smith in hot pursuit. Lap after lap , Brantley co untered Sm ith's a tternpts . 10 pass. Dineen doubles at Woodland Scrambles By Derryl Anderson WOODLAND, WA, JAN. 10 Paulson 's Kawasaki/DK Performa nce-bac ked Chris Dineen went wild in th e mud while claiming wins in th e 125 and 250cc cla sses at Motocross Park 's scra mbles. Din een was a bso lu tely fast and flawl ess, winning every mota in sigh t. A steady downpour of rain prior to th e race kept everything interesting, as th e mud co nt in ued 10 get deeper and deeper. In moto one of the 125cc class, Din een got the lead , while Paulson's tea mmates Chris Bail ey and Eddie Gerrish rode side-by-side. Behind th e tri o was Longview 's Dusty Kirk . G erri sh .' finall y pulled a head of Bailey and sta rted to reel in Dineen . Severa l tim es Gerri sh got within 10 yards of Dineen but his roost was 100 m uc h to handle. Besides, Dineen wasn 't making any mi stakes, At th e chec kered flag it was Dineen fol 'Iowed in 10yard inter vals by Gerrish , Bail ev a nd Kirk . The final moto was a carbon copy of th e first go aro und. Dineen go t the earl y lead and went wire-to-wire ahead of Gerrish, Bail ey a nd Kirk . In the 250cc class Dineen con troll ed every moto from start-tofini sh with Gerrish being hi s closest challenger. : The Mini class had th e most entra nt s of the da y with B1endzall/ Longview Honda/Columbia MC backed Ryan Anderson taking con- trol , In th e first moto J eremiah Portor got th e lead followed by Jeremy Pentland, Ernie Gendron, Anderson and Travis Webber. Some spots in' th e tra ck were gelling very deep and Ande rso n wa s having trouble finding a descent line. By lap tw o And er son pa ssed th e Iront threesome a nd sta rted to put distance on th e rest of the pack. Meanwhile, Pentland fin all y worked hi s way past Portor for second. Chance Fra sure didn 't fini sh th e race and Webber moved up o n Gendron. Anderson lapped one or two rid ers per lap , and a t th e checkered flag , he passed th e second and th ird place riders. Meanwhile, Webber sq ueezed by Gendron. In second was Pentland, th en Portor, Webber and Gendron. In moto two Gendron pulled a su pe r hol esh ot a head of Anderson a nd Pentland. Anderson took over the 'lead by turn four and Pentland caug h t up to Gendron riding sideby-side for half a lap. Finally Pentland got by. Right behind them Portor lost it co ming at th e dogleg. He was up and running shortly but too far back 10 catch up. Meanwhile, Anderson was out to a sizeabl e lead as th e chec kered flag ca me o u t. Mizell takes win at Sand Springs Trials By Rich Allman SAN D SP RINGS , OK, DEC. 20 In close Expert class co mpe ti tio n Ga be Mizell took th e victory wi th a four-poin t mar gin over Ron Lee a t the No rt heas tern Oklahom a T rials T eam 's tri al s a t Sa nd Springs. Five sections, from rock pile trough s to sandy creek bottom s, were run o ver four loops. Once again Matt Moore won the Rookie class, whil e Paul Bolen took th e top honors in th e Novice class by three points over Todd J ohnson and Phil Mill s. The Master class was topped by Shan Mo ore with Mitch Bright corning in only six points back a nd . well within' striki ng di stance. The Amateur class was a very close contest with the lead swa p p ing hands several times. Rich Allman wa s consistent eno ugh 10 o u tlast Larry Lingafecter and pulled au! to a n eight point win. Hicks handles LACRMX By Terry Rezek LANCASTER; CA, JAN. 10 Eddie Hi cks and hi s Yamaha topped the 250cc Pro class a t CRG's first motocross of the new year, held tod ay at Los Angeles County Raceway. H icks is usuall y unchall enged a t LACR, but today he found Suzukimounted Nicky Pounds waiting for him. Hicks ca me out of the first turn of mota one wi th th e lead just ahead of Murray Sha ckleford's Suzuki and promptl y stre tched his lead 10 two seconds. Pounds was back in third but moved up to second in lap two. Rich Truchinski was in fourth and closing.
