Mike Jones piloted his Yamaha to three straight final-event wins at the Augusta Arenacross in Augusta. Georgia. moved pas t the fallen leader and set hi s sights o n J on es, but o nce aga in th e Yam aha-mounted front-runner was ab le to den y th e competitio n. On Sunday, after both J on es a nd Hand muscled past early lead er Di ck ie Bellora , Ca givamounted, th e two began going at it. For all 15 laps Hand would stick to Jones' roos t, but the , lead er was making no m istakes and would never be headed on hi s way to a third win in a row. Hand settled for a close second while Carroll came home in third. Bellora and Hayes rounded o ut th e top five, with Glass and Crowe account ing for the n ext two po siti on s. For hi s weekend sweep Jones took hom e nearl y $1000 and th e points lead in th e cham p ions h ip series. Carroll is next with Hand, Glass, and Coo mbs picking up th e slack from there. In the first 125cc Amat eu r moto Jim Neese, on a Suzuk i finis hed first , followed by Steve Genter o n a H onda a nd Brad Proctor on a Yam aha. In the second moto Pr octor too k the holeshot followed by Genter, Neese and Sco tt Riggs on a Yamaha. On the seco nd lap Proctor wen t' down, allowing Genter to take the lead . The top four rid ers raced neck-to-n eck with Proctor making a good recovery and rega ining th e lead . H e led the field to th e fin al lap and fini shed with a first overall for th e day. Hamann handles Castaic Stone Trials By Jimmie O'Dell CASTAIC, CA, JAN_ 16 Tom ' H amann was the class of the field as he con vincingly took the Expert class win at the Southern California Trials Association's Castaic Stone Trial s. Over 75 riders co m p le te d three loops with 10 sections laid out along the Angeles National Forest area. H amann took his Beta with th ree cleans through the first loop with a score of 16, narrowly ahea d of Ken Leduc, who turned in a 18-3 score. T he second loop score of 7-7 by H amann put him into-a co mfo rtable lead. Mark Oldar and Leduc finis hed th e secon d loop tied for second place with 37 dabs apiece. On the third loop H amann styled h is way th rough the sectio ns with the win in sigh t, finishin g the loop wit h a 10-6 tall y, 33-16 for th e day. Second place was decided by two da bs in th e final th ree sectio ns, as Oldar was behind Ledu c by only o ne dab after sectio n seven. Oldar, aboard a Merlin, had a three in section eig h t, while Ledu c fived. Oldar clinched second place with his two cleans in sectio ns nine and 10 to fini sh the day with a 47-9 score. Leduc, aboa rd a Yamaha, had a one in section nine and a clean in section 10, wrapping up th e top three fini sh er s, a n d fini shing his day with a 49-12 score, only two dabs behind Oldar . Merlin-mounted Clive Hannan to p ped the Intermedi at e Vet eran class with his score of 40-12, beating au t second pl ace Ch ris McHugh 's 48- 13 score and th ird pl ace Dave Whittle wi th a 57-15 for the da y. Bob Mill er rode his Fantic to the Novice Super Senior cl ass wi n. Mill er 's tall y for th e da y was only 15-18, scori ng th e wid est margin victory of th e da y over second place Dave Stanley who score 51-9. The largest class of th e da y, th e Novice Ch ampionship featured twotime World Bicycle Trials Champion Ot Pi of Spain, making h is motorcycle trials debut finishing 10th. Jon Fr azier was th e class winner with a 28-15 score. The Beg inner Champion ship class was th e second largest of the day. Rick Bemak was tied with Mike Cushionbury going int o the third loop, each had only four dabs apiece.
