Birk estol u sed 2-1 performan ces to net the wins in th e 125 a nd 250cc Pro class a nd the accom panyi ng cas h payoff at th e sixth race of th e seven round a rena cross ser ies a t Monroe. Birkestol's first cha ll en ge was topping th e 250cc Pro / Intermed ia te swapfest since he had so me heavy competition in th e form of Ph il Larson, aboard a Honda. and Intermediate class dominator Jeff Jacobson. Larson got th e ha ndl e on the co m pe titio n in th e first rnoto as the Pros gated fir st fo llowed by the Interm ed ia te riders. Larson rode a ma rvelous race to bea t Birkestol for the Pro win , but th e amazing pe rformance ca me fro m Jacobson. Jacobson picked off the Pro duo to card the firs t moto win. Larson, Birk estol , Tim Doyle and Chris Mo ritz filled the top five at mote's end. The seco nd co n test saw Birkestol and Larson wage a baule for the number o ne spot. Once again J acobson ca me from behind and pulled off an upset of sons in the process. Beh ind Jacobson rode Birkestol , Larson and Jeff Hoffman. Trailing Jacobson in th e Intermediate class was Moritz, Hoffman and Doy le. Birkesto l ca me back in th e.combined l 25cc Pro/Intermediate class a nd posted two stella r performances. Birkestol didn 't have Larson to contend with, but did have Aaron Shardelman looming in his shadow. Shardelman won the first rnoto in the Pro portion but couldn't make a move at regaining Birkestol's lead in th e second round and was relegated to second in th e overalls. SCOll Grimm was th ird overa ll after consistent 3-3 performances . Jacobson wo n the Int ermedia te class with a II sweep, beating Kawasaki riders Scott H ickso n , Tara H arr iso n and Dav id MacLean. Racer promoter Lee Co ll ins got a bird 's-eye view o f the ba tt le wagin g for th e Up T he H ill class lead , between Mark .Murp h y and Will Hurley in rn o to one. Mo to two had Mo ri tz taking the win , bu t Mori tz' first moto fourth gave Murphy the win via 1-3 rides. Moritz, SCOll Browne, Hurley and Collins filled the top five overall. Results I- o :I: a.. Kell y H arness made a stro ng seco nd mo to showing to cla im the overall win in the 250cc Beginner class a t the arenacross held in th e Clark County Fairgrounds. Keith Barnhart got the ini ria l lead in the first moto followed by Darrin Currier, Mike Dean , Rich Schwabe, Harness, Dana Guillory. Je sse Dean and Mike Greel y. Barnhart held on for two laps before Currier found a wa y by while Harness moved up to fourth. Mike Dean and H arness battled tooth and nail for severa l laps. Twice th ey were side-by-side for almost half a lap. Fin all y Mik e Dean pulled ahead a nd started to reel in Barnhart. Twice they were right next to eac h o ther but Barnhart pulled it out both times. Currier went out to a 20-yard lead as th e fin al flag was waved. In the final mOIO Harness ca me off the li ne flying and went the dis ta nce wi thou t looking back . Right behind him was Barnhart, Mike Dea n , J im Simeroth, Jesse Dean a nd the others. Once again Barnhart and Mike Dean bauled bac k and fort h. Twice Mik e Dean got ahead but Barnhart co ntin ued to repay the favor. Simeroth moved u p a position n as everyo ne else strung o ut. At th e checkered flag it was Harness wi th 12 yards on Barnhart, Mi ke Dea n , Sirneroth, J esse Dean, Guillory, Currier a nd Greely. In the first heat race of 125cc Beginners Trevor Leviu got th e lead ahead of M ik e Hamn ess , Jim McBryde, Jeff Papke and J oe Talbot. Hamness took over the lead o n lap two and went th e distance followed a t th e checkered flag by McBryde , Papke, Levitt a nd T albot . Randy Jones led the seco nd heat race 'fo llowed by Bryce Aguillard, Mik e Woods a n d G ordy R owe. Woods started to move up right away and by lap four he was in second cha lle ngi ng Jones. A lap later J on 7s bobbled and Woods flew by him In th e a ir. At th e end it was Woods, Jones, Aguillard and Row e. Lewiu controll ed th e B m ain ah ead of Rowe and T albot. In the A main H amness got th e lead and went wire-to-wire. McBryd e was in second until Papke got by. From there on Woods and McBryde battled lap aft er lap. Young wins at Firebird MX By Michael Ross CHANDLER , AZ, JAN. 10 Honda rider Chip Young took both I25cc Amateur motos for the overall victory at Firebi rd Raceway after di cing with arch ri val Bri an Eliasson. In moto one Eliasson holeshot and led Young, Shawn Cisco, Bill Logas and Joe Weber into th e first run. By the seco nd lap Young and Eliasson were neck-and-neck and pulling away from Logas as Cisco crashed. On lap three Young bumped Eliasson hard trying to pass and Eliasson re linquished the lea d to Young short ly afterwards . Young started to pull away and had a IO-second lead at th e checkered flag. Cisco was running hard and caugh t Eliassen on lap six to ta ke second a t the flag. Cisco was entered as a Novice and took the Novice class hono rs. Fourth overa ll wen t to Amateur Da vid Pingree on his Kawasaki KX 80. MOlO two saw You ng wi th th e hol esho t and p u ll away to a no ther win. Seco nd to Young a t the start and his constant shadow throughout th e moto was P ingr ee o n his mini cycle. Eliasson took third at the checkered flag , four seconds behind Pingree. Shawn Cisco took the Novice class win with h is fourth overall finish behind Eliasson. Ci sco got a terrible sta rt but picked up six places in th e seven -lap mo to. The best race of the da y was the fifth pl ace di ce amo ng Bill Logas, Mike Yellow hair, Steve Kammen~er and Scou Moore. These four NOVIce riders swa p ped pl aces in a tooth and nail battle that went to th e wir e.
