Tho mpson h a s applied for an AMA sanction, a n d the AMA would like to sanc tion th e An ahei m race as the ope n ing ro u nd of th e Supercross Series, but the right to p romote AMA-sanctioned supercross races in so u thern Ca lifornia belongs to SXI by a previous co n tra ct (the In sport Ag re ement), and SXI refuses to surrend er that ri ght. "We still ho pe to sa nctio n (the An aheim race)," sa id AMA Vic e President of Pro fessional Com pe tition Bill Amic k. " We th in k th e event shou ld be sa nctio ned, (b u t th e situation has not been reso lved ). Because th ere's a lawsu it, there's not a whol e lot I ca n say. I heard th e fa ctories wi ll be there. I t's proba bly going to look like an AM A-sanctioned supercross wh et her we're th ere or not. " Ami ck added th at the AMA will not san ction any su p ercr oss race ,which con flicts with MTEG's Anaheim event. When asked if th e AMA would sue for th e ri ght to gra nt MTE G a sanction for Anahe im , AMA president Ed You ngblood said , " We have not filed suit against any body. " We have explored - a nd we h ave made no decis io n yet - seeking a declaratory judgement," Youngblood said. " We would tak e th e case to the judge a nd say , ' Yo u tell us, yes or n o , ca n we grant th is sanctio n?' It 's n o t a su it, it 's a legal maneuver. " " We have stated tha t we will explore every poss ib le means. to find a so lu tio n , " Yo ungb lood sa id . " W i th o u t viol ating the Ins port Agreeme nt, we would like to sanction Ana heim." Beca use th e AMA has expressed interest in sanc tioning the race, SXI has filed a lawsuit against the AMA , cha rg ing th e associatio n with "a nticipa to ry br each of co ntract." SXI a lso charges that sta teme n ts m ade in a n A MA press rel ease issued in Decem ber were libelous. "The Insport agreeme nt prohib its th e AMA fro m sanctioning events without our permission," sa id Goodwin. " I n n ews rel ea se la s t Decem ber , they sa id th ey were lookin g for a way to sanc tio n T hom pso n for th e Anaheim event, "An d they made stateme nts that due to th e bankruptcy of SXI; th ere might be .so rne question of s xrs ability to perform ," G oodwin added. "That's n ot tr ue , and it 's been terri b ly da magin g to us. It 's made it diffi cult to do ' business with o ur sp o n so rs. It ' s part o f th e AMA co nsp iracy to pu t us o u t o f business." Youngb lood declined to co m me nt o n Goodwin 's law su it. The biggest question amon g fans - will factory riders be at Anaheim? - a p pare n tly was answered irnm e-: di at el y following th e co urt decision. " We 're goi ng to hav e the factory riders, " Thompso n sa id. " We do not know , at this point, if we' ll have an AMA sanction, but we kno w we'll have th e top ri ders." We will probably be th ere - it 's a defin ite maybe. Ana heim is a big event an d we h ope we can partici pate in it, but th e cham p io n shil?,is wha t we' re going to be racing for .
