Glover grabs gold atAscotMX By Ke n Faug ht G AR DENA, CA, NOV. 20 T ea m Yamaha 's Broc " Go lden Bo y" G lo ver made a rare appearance a t Ascot Park tonigh t a nd took both th e 125 a nd 250cc Pro overall wins. In the first 125cc Pro rno to Kerry Mulligan hol esh ot Tim Rutherford, Gl over a nd Cagi va- mo unt ed Pete Mu rr y. Gl over soo n passe d Rutherford a nd set after Mull igan. On th e seco nd lap Gl over ca ught u p to Mulligan a nd began to look for a way arou nd . Gl over, unfami liar with th e slippery Ascot track, tried everythi ng to get b y Mulligan but nothing seemed to be working. Mu lliga n went o n to take th e win over G lover, R ut herfo rd, Murry and Corey Schweitzer. Second moto action saw Rut herford , ridi ng a borrowed bike, holeshot Mull iga n , Murry and Scheitzer. Gl over rou nded the corner in seventh but q uickly adva nced to fou rth by th e second turn. Rutherford began to expa nd his lead, ho ping to beat the m ulti -National Cham p , G lover. At th e half wa y mark , G lover passed Mu rry a nd Mull igan and bega n to decrease Rutherford 's lead. The fina l few la ps saw a n intense battle for th e lead as G lover would get a wheel in on Ru th erford and then Rutherford wo u ld sligh tly pu ll away. With j ust seconds left in .the race, Glover put a tricky pass o n Ruth erford near the I finish a nd too k the mot o win a hea d o f Ru therford, Mull igan , Schei tzer a nd Murry. A 2-1 score ga ve G lover the overall , Mulligan was second wit h 1-3 fin ish es a nd R utherford was thi rd with a 3-2 ta ll y. Yamaha-mounted Ron T urner led Mulligan, G lover, Mu rry and Bryan Paq uette around the first corner in the 250cc Pro class. In the second tu rn Murry found a way by Mulligan w hil e G lover sho t in to second. Turner soo n fell, handi ng Murry th e lead over Gl over, Mull igan, Paquette a nd J erry Black. Towards th e end of the second lap Paq uette dropped his H onda, advancing Corey Schweitzer to fifth . At the halfway po int G lover passed Mu rry and Turner was back into fourth afte r passing Black . Murry event ua lly dro pped back to · fourth where he fin ished behind Gl over, Mulligan and Turner. Once again T u rner grabbed th e early lead in moto two over Mulliga n , G lover a nd Paq uette. After a drop-off Gl over passed Mulligan a nd started chasing T urner. On th e third lap Gl over j um ped pas t Turner a nd moved into the lead. Glover went on to take th e win over Turner, Mulligan, Paquette, and Black. Zahrf wins Wild Turkey GP By Terry Rezek PAL MDAL E, CA, NOV . 22 Ca lifornia Racing Clu b (CRC) held its Wild T urkey Grand Prix at Los Angeles Co unty Raceway today, and the sing le 45 minute moto, dead engine star t format brought out many rid ers, including several that were getti ng rea dy for the Ba rstow-toVegas desert race. Kenn y Zahrt was top Pro . Open P ro J im Co ffey had th e heaviest sta rti ng foot in th e Pro class a nd went into turn one wi th the lead. Rod Richardso n a nd desert end uro ace Larry Roeseler were the quickest 250s off the lin e. The P ro s arid Intermedi at es were combi ned by d isplacemen t,a nd I25ccInterm ediate J eff Barbacovi got th e holesh o t, fo llo wed by l 25cc Pr o Rich T aylor. Co ffey led the 500s all the wa y for an eas y wi n. Richardson led to lap five the n dropped o ut. Roeseler led briefly bu t slo wed short ly thereaft er a nd just lim ped around for a finish . H e was testing sus pe nsion on hi s Kaw asak is and this one was set too soft for the slam -ba ng motocros s style course. By th is ti me , Zahrt had recovered fro m a n ex tre mely ra re m ulti -kick sta rt and had moved i nto the 250cc Pro lead . Zahrt went on for the wi n and more poi nts for his q uest for two number o ne pla tes. T a ylor took the l 25cc Pro win. Barbaco vi avoided co n flict with hi s hol eshot a nd led all th e way in sp ite of an old leg injury, aggravated by contact with a rock during practice. Tony Q uall s was riding with ca u tio n after a big cra sh last week a nd finis hed th ird. Tim T elford was back in action in th e 250cc In termed ia te event . T elford , o u t for severa l months with broken bones, startedcau tio usly, the n warmed to the task and mov ed up stead ily, ta king the lead in th e second hal f of the race. H e kep t moving up right into th e win. Intermedi at e (50Occ) T om Smith go t the holesh ot ri ght behind th e Pro lead er. H e fad ed a bit as th e race wor e o n , event ua lly fini shing fo urth. J oh n Greenway was off the line seco nd and q ui ckly moved up to the 500cc Int ermed iate lead to stay there for th e wi n. Jim Send elbach didn 't have a good start bu tgo ts tro nger andworked his way to second by the tim e the black a nd white fell. George Andrews read th e starter .. perfectl y in the 500cc No vice race and was movin g a t th e fir st tw i tch of th e flag. Andrews had a 50 foot lead by th e tim e th e pack ent ered th e second t ~Hn. H e kept !: stead)' pa ce and wa s never cha llenge d on his way to th e victory circl e a nd the 500cc Novice wi n. The 250c started in the second row of the Novice race and Mike McCarley got a bad sta rt, but by lap five, he had the 250cc and th e overall lead. H e kept the 250cc lead and took the 250ccNovicewin, bu thegot surprised o n th e overall. Ryan Carlis le topped th e 125cc Novice event . The same forma t held for all th e races, so 500cc rid er Allen Gra m was first Beginner o ut on th e track. G rant had tro u ble a nd dropped ou t, giving the lead to Byron Green e, whoha pp ily took it and th e 500cc Beginner win . Lonne Adams had the 250cc Beginner cla ss lead by the end of the first lap. Adams q uickl y d ispensed wi th all the 500s and took the overall o n lap four. H e went o n for an easy win. Sco tt P~kare k p icked up the I25cc Begi riner W tn. Melanie Parkes go bbled th e competi tio n in th e Woman 's class. Gettin g a si ng le kick startshe rocketed into turn o ne well ahea d of th e othe r women a nd had no trouble pulling ' fur the r ahead in each lap. At the end of 45 minu tes, she fin ished more than a min ut e ahea d of second p lace. She also rode the regular l25 cc Beginner, fin ish ing eigh th o ut of 13th. Zahrt built hi s points lead with a win in the Vets Expert race wit h Roeseler p icking up second. Dal e Ti ttl em eir cemented his lead early in the Vets Novice event a nd took the wm.
