An overflow of 125cc Beginners were o n hand an d in order to trim th e field to 10 riders for safety purposes, two q ua lifiers were in order. H an sen smoked th e fi rs t qual ifier o n the Am eri can Tire and Kawasak i-sp onsored ' YZ w hi le th e other we nt th e way o f Kawasa ki jockey Mark Sei fer. In th e ma in event, H ansen shot into the lea d at th e drop of the ga te wit h Darin Stru n k and Ka wasak i ri de r Eric Cumm in gs foll o win g. Stru n k o vertook Hansen for the lead o n th e foll owin g circuit of the whoop-lined co u rse, leaving H a nsen and Seifer to swap over th e number two spot. T h ings looked good for Stru n k until th e H onda p ilot hit la p ped traffic and went down with two laps to go , putting H ansen into th e lead. Strunk got moving agai n, carvi ng to fourth behind H ansen , Cu m mi ngs, and Seifer, on ly to crash again o n the fin al lap. H ansen took a j u b lia n t w in w hi le seco nd went to Cum mi ngs. Sei fer, Cagiva-mounted R o b y L ea ch , Mike Nova, Eddie Denhem a nd Strun k filled the top seven a t mot o 's end. T he Professional classes we re a bit down o n numbers fro m previous races. Beyer did all he co u ld to keep G raves in sight , bu t finished a good half a lap back of Graves in eac h outing. Combined. with the Pros were the 250cc Interm edi at es, led by Yamaha-mo unted T im Stillion. " T h e second co ntest was also a runaway performance by G raves as Beyer was rel egated to a distant seco nd ove ra ll a fter 2-2 rid es. Still io n topped Kevin McCarthy for th e overa ll in th e Intermediate p ortion. Graves was faced with much stiffer competition in the 125cc Pro class , in the form of Grayson Hart on th e DMC/LRD/PB I/Smith /Mal colm Smith-sponsored Kawasaki, but even Hart found it difficult to stay close to Graves. As Grav es lapped all but Hart, who was second, a n d third place Beyer in the first moto, H art did hi s best in moto two to take the ove ra ll from Graves, but ran out o f time and luck, thus giving G rav es hi s seco nd overa ll a fter I-I rides . Hart and Beyer filled th e top three. Kory Rasmussen demoli sh ed a huge field of 60cc machines in both motos to tak e the 60cc Junior class by storm. Rasmussen 's closest com petition ca me from Cody Lamm, aboa rd th e o n ly n on-Kaw asaki in th e fiel d. Larnm's H onda crossed th e line seco n d in both contests to take seco nd overa ll, beating Mall Williams, J essy Williams a nd fifth ove rall fin ishe r Brandon White. Georgia 's Brian Ada ms led th e 250cc class off the line first and was tu rning lap times faster th an anyone else, but lost his sco re card and was d is q ua l if ie d. Donn ie Cl ar k was leading th e 200cc class and had the overa ll lead, but he mi ssed a ch eck a n d was a lso di sq ual if ied . Cro ss started in the fourth wa ve as a senior rid er and put in fast laps throughout th e two h our plus o ne lap race to co llec t th e win. Wes ley Miller p ut his - KTM in fro nt an d led Steven Barker in for the 250cc class win . Mo ntey Harley amazed ever yone as he won the Four-Stroke class a nd fini sh ed second overall.' Cubb ie Bare led the 200cc class o n ' th e first two la p s, bu t a rock derailed h is chain a nd p ut hi m o u t o f th e race. Jim Fen ner then m oved in to th e lead and took the wi n over G len Rector. Dal e Rogers and J oh n La mb diced th e entire race a nd R ogers took th e 125cc class wi n by six seconds. Andrews rod e h is Andrews' Honda-sponsored C R250 R into the lead on th e first lap a n d held it to th e fin ish, clicki ng off 16 co nsistent laps, seldom varymg more th an 10 seco n ds per lap. T he race was run o n an exce lle nt, fast three-mile track under. beautiful weather co nd itio ns. Rob Melzer rode his Honda to a n impressive 125cc class win, leading from start to fini sh . Broken Spokes Motorcycle Club rider Bill Stallings, had a tougher go of it for his 200cc cl ass win. Stallings stru ggled from a bad start and pushed his Honda until he gained th e lead on lap four a n d pulled ou t a good lead by th e end over Steve Leggett o n a Yamaha. KTM rider J oel' J enkins tried to keep Andrews near, but th e pa ce was too quick. Jenkins had to be satisfied with the 250cc class win with a bit of bother from Ken Ed ie in second p lace on his Yamaha . John Householder looked to be a sh oo-in in th e Open class on hi s Husqvarna, but a n injured kn ee put him out and T im Coen o n his Kawasaki .went into th e lead for th e win, The Senior One class saw Boulevard H onda rider T odd Ervin w in a nothe r class for th e Broken Spokes Motorcycl e Club , whil e G en e Robinson took his Mathias Cycle sponsored Husqvarna to the Senior T wo win.
