Cl Kadlec wins Last Chance Turkey HS By Roger Dowden · LARAMIE, WY, NOV. 22 Fritz Kadlec used th e unlikely com bination of a borrowed motorcycle and a fl at tire to vanq ui sh a ll combatan ts at th e 12th running o f th e Last Cha nce Turkey Race, the fina l round of th e Rock y Mountain H ar e Scrambles Circuit. Alt hough the Laramie area had experie nced an unusuall y war m fall , Mother Nature had deposited eigh t in ch es of snow o n th e rock y foo thill co urse th e week before the ra ce. The 34° tem perature on race day was just warm enough to create some very slick trail s. One uphill trail through aspen trees and beaver dam s was especially fru strating to ride rs not eq uip ped with ice screws o r spikes in their tires. The LeMans start round Open A Husky rider J oe Melinkovich way o ut front , fo llo wed by Vet A H usky rider Floyd Stretch and 250cc A rider Frosty Selm er on a KTM . By th e two mi le point, 250cc A rider Chri s Wilban ks had moved into th e lead , closely followed by Kadl ec and Open A rid er Mark H ynes. Kadl ec had already punctured his rear tire but passed Wilb an ks' KTM a t the 3-m ile poin t. H ynes was pulling even with Wilbanks [our mil es int o th e course whe n th e carb on hi s KTM iced up, droppi ng him to 10th pl ace. By the endof lap one, the order was Kadlec, Wi lbanks, Jamie Burgess, Selmer and H ynes. Kadlec's flat tire was no t hampering his riding at all a nd he was stea dily stretching his lead. H e later said, " I actually think th at flat rear tire was th e ho t setup o n th ose icy tra ils." Wi lbanks, some distance back, was so lidly in second. By the end of lap two, H ynes had moved back into third. By the fifth and final II -mi le loop , ma ny changes were taki ng place. Ri chard Staley, on a 250cc KT M, ha d mov ed up th ro ugh the pack displacing Selmer to six th a nd passin g Burg ess wi th in feet of the fini sh line [o r fourt h overall. H ynes -stalked Wi lbanks for the fu ll fourth lap and most of the fifth la p befo re pass ing h im two mil es [rom th e fini sh. T he fi na l order wa s Kadl ec , H yn es, Wilban ks, Sta le y, Bu rgess a n d Selmer.
