Nearly 30,000 fans saw Pennsylvania 's Gl ass o u tpa ce New J ersey Kaw asaki pilot Brian Carroll and H onda-mounted Da vey Co ombs o n Fr id a y th en McM ill en led a New York sweep o f th e top three spots Saturdav, H onda 's R o be rt Mc Cu llough a nd Kawasa ki-moun ted Carlo Coen rode place a nd show be hind McMill en in tha t race. Friday's program got underway wi th qual ifyin g ro u nds to na rrow the field dow n to 12 for the fina l. McCu llough led th e Sm ith /S hoei/ S urf-b a ck ed G lass a nd Coo m bs home in the first heat while th e Gearbacked Ca rroll captured heat two a head of Coe n and seco nd -ra n ked in door pi lot Barry Ca rsten. Wh en the flag dr opped for th e fina l it was G lass ta king th e hol eshot with a sho rt inside line to turn one. AXO /Shoei/Sooner -backed Coombs came nex t, followed by Coe n, Ca rro ll, Ya m a h a -m o u nted Carst e n , McCullough, and Ka wasa ki's Mar k Lach owicz. Glass stretch ed hi s lead sligh tly through th e next two laps while Coombs got pinched out by Carroll in a tigh t left-hander. Carroll then began to pressure Glass from th e runner-up positi on , and for the _next five circuits th e two were wh eelto-wheel. . A short way back Coombs was leading a six-man freight train for the number three spot. Coen, McCullou gh, Carsten, L a ch owicz, and McMillen' were a ll in volved in th e stru gg le. With four laps left in the l2-lap final Ca rroll dove wid e o ff th e finish line doubles looking for a n o utside ro u te through lapped tra ffic to ge t by th e leader. Instead, Carroll nearly found him self in th e sta nds afte r shoo ti rig sideways in to a whoop section. That slip a llowed Coom bs and th e rest o f th e pack to ge t closer, tho ug h no positions cha nged hands. In th e end Gl ass was back on the hot sea t with Carroll again flanking h im in every corner. But time ran out o n Car roll a nd the rest o f th e co n tend er s as Gl ass cr ossed th e checkered flag a bike u p on the ru n n er- u p . Behind Carro l l a n d Coom bs ca me Coen , McC ull ough a nd Carsten . Sa tu rday 's second n ight o f racing fea tu red th e usual qual ifyin g heats, an d this tim e it was McMill en a nd Coe n lead ing th e way. McMi llen was tra iled across the line by -G lass a nd J oh n Ryan. Coen bested Co om bs an d Carroll in scoring his hea t race win. When th e fin al 12 left the line for Saturda y's ma in even t it was McC u llou gh lea d i n g Co en , Gl ass a n d McMillen th ro ugh the early stages with Ca rsten, Coombs a nd Brett Sa la nder p icking u p th e lead er' s trail from th ere. Three laps into the race McMill en began ' taking steps towards th e from , moving by Glass through the whoops then slipping past Co en for th e runner-up spot. Co en sat third whi le G lass was / ho lding off Carsten. J ust past th e ha lfway mark McMillen began ree li ng McCu llo ugh in and within a few la ps th e tw o wer e whe el-to-wheel. Before McMillen co u ld mak e a move a midpack sta ck-up saw Glass slip on a tight turn and take down Coombs in the process. Carroll a nd La chowicz a lso found th eir way into the pile-up, a nd by the tim e things were sorted La ch owi cz was in fifth behind , Co en and Carroll. Furth er up McMill en co n rinued to h ound McCullough but co uld n' t overta ke the leading Honda. Finall y, with less than three laps left , McMillen o ut gu n ned th e lead er th rough a cho p py whoop sectio n and set his sigh ts on the finis h line. At the end it was McCu llough sti ll fast in th e runnerup ride while Coe n held o ff Carsten a nd Lac ho wicz for the th ird pl ace check. Arenacross LANDOVER, MD, NOV. 20-21 H onda- mou nted Dickie Bel-lora went three for four in dominatingthe main events at the D.C. Arenacross, he ld at the Capitol Center. Bellora scored a set o f wins in Friday ni ght's 125 and 250cc Pro fin al s, then returned for Saturda y's seco nd sho w to cha lk up a nothe r 125cc P ro victory. Onl y Downer 's Grove Yam aha pilot Brian Stanley was able to ge t a wheel u p on Bell ora, taking Saturda y's 250cc Pro main with a co n vincing comefrom-behind ride. T he Ca p ito l Center, home o f the Washington Bullet s professiona l bask etball team a n d h o ck ey's Washington Ca ps, was hostin g it s seco nd World Sp orts/ USHRA Arenacro ss. The progr am incl uded an ATV race and a monster tru ck show al ong with the motorcycles and the two nights of ra cing brought in mor e tha n 20,000 fans. With bo th 125 a nd 250cc ma chines co m pe ting eac h evening got underwa y with a set o f qualified heats.
