Fastest rider of t he day was Team Honda's newly acquired rider Jeff I,.eisk (7 ). Leisk topped both 250cc Pro motos. lead ahead of Breker, this time riding a more serious looking Honda CR, and KX-mounted Arnet. Tony Wanket and Mike Dunlap rounded out the top five. Shortly after, Sommo began having problems with his mount and eventually dropped off the pace, giving Breker the lead. Breker took command once in the lead and never looked back. Arnet moved up to finish second with Du nla p p lacing third. In second round action, Sommo, once again, motored into the lead, only to be passed by Breker a few laps in to the race. Sommo chased Breker to the checkered flag with Arnet netting third. Breker aced the class , while Arnet's 2-3 gave him second overal I. Somma claimed third via a 5-2 tally. Twenty-three riders lined the starting gate for the start of the first Vet Intermediate/Expert moto. In row two were 27 Vet Novi ces. When the gate dropped Expert Alan Olsen put his Honda into the lead with Kawasaki-mounted Frank Thomason and Gary Jones close behind. Jones quickly displaced of Thomason then set after and passed Olsen for the lead. Making his move through the pack was Kawasaki rider Jeffery Haase. Running in the number one Intermediate spot was Potls Thomas. Thomas was on the gas and moving up through the Expert ranks, leaving Alan Kent behind. Leading the Novice ranks was Rick Glass on a Honda; second p lace was Brad Sloan. Mike Ra n k and Rex . White were third and fourth. T At the finish , th e overall leader was Jones, but he jammed his foot and dropped bac k givi ng H aase th e lead and win . Ol sen was second wit h Brent WalIingsford third, and Chuck T undra held do wn fourth with Jones fifth . G lass topped the Novice class ah ead of White, Sloan, Rank and , Gary Bowden . Jones, with h is an kle h ea vily taped, stole the hol eshot in mo to two followed by H aas e, O lsen and Mark Anderson. Soon after, Haase took command, while Jones battled with Olsen for second. Close behind Olsen was Anderson. Intermediate Thomas was leading his class, while Glass was doing the same with the Novices. Haase led everyone to the checkered flag, once again, ahead of Olsen, who claimed second overall. Third went to Ho ne. Tundra and Wallingsford rounded out the top five . Thomas claimed the Intermediate overall victory wit h Kent .finishing second. Third went to Ron Way. Glass styled to the Novice win ahead of Sloan (3-3), Sweetner (6-2), Rank (2-4) and Bowden. More than 30 riders filled the gate in the first 250cc Int ermediate moto with Jeremy McGrath jumping out to an early lead. McGrath opened up a larger lead with every lap, whi le David Noel was being pressured by Mike Hooker an d Jim Hawkins for second. On lap three, Noel dropped out giving Hooker second and Hawkins third. Then Hawkins disappeared with Steven Sibell taking over his space. McGrath won with 10 seconds to spare followed by Hooker, Mike Fowler, Sibell and Luc DeLay . Hooker nailed the holeshot in moto two with Greg Pierce, Ulf Johansson and Delay right behind. McGrath was stuck in traffic but was quickly working his way up through the pack. . By the third lap, McGrath was ' second and wi thin sight of leader H oo ker. McGrath charged after Hooker, passed hi m and finis hed wit h a 20 second lead. Fow ler fin ished third. Fourth wen t to Rich Barton with an 8-5 score. Desert star Dan Ashcraft finis hed fifth overall with a 6-7 tall y". McG rath was back at it again in th e 125cc In termediate ra nks, but wasn 't as successful. Phil La wrence too k th e early lead in the first mo to wi th Mi ke Chamberla in i nches behind. The two riders swapped positions twice wi thin the first few Yamaha rider Jeremy McGrath launches over a tabletop jump en route to the 250cc Intermediate class w in . laps and continued to battle inten- . sely for aw hi le before Chamberlain blew a turn giving Lawrence room to breath. Third p lace was occupied by Jim Perry , while McGrath was hard on his rear knobbies. But when Chamberlain went wide in the turn, Perry sn uck by, then McGrath did the same shortly after. Lawrence wen t on to win the rnoto, while McGrath sn uck by Perry on the last lap for second place. immy Lewis slipped by Chamberain, also on the last lap , for fo urt h . McGrath led the pack out of the star t chute in the second moto with Lawrence in hot pursuit. The two riders fought tooth-and- na il every inch of the way , with McGrath holding his own - until the last la p , that is. Lawrence dove underneath McGrath a few tu rn s from the finish which gave Lawrence the overall victory. McGrath took second overall with a 2-2 tall y, while Randy Moody finished up third overall with a 74 total. Chamberlain settled for fourth overall via 7-4 tall y. The 80cc class featured more than 30 riders on the gate. At the start of the first moto, Intermediate Derek Natvig put his Kawasaki to the front of the pack but was quickly displaced by Expert Jeff Grafton (Yamaha). Grafton was soon joined by Expert Suzuki rider Dana Wiggins. The pair quickly pulled away from the field, while Natvig maintained control of the Intermediates with R usty Somers chasing. . Grafton motored home with the win, while Wiggi ns settled for second. Gary Ybarra finished third. Nat vig bea t Som ers for the Intermedia te victory, while th e Novice ranks wen t to Ra m o n Noriega, Shane Scar piello and Tim Enoch. Gra fton sto le' th e lead , once again, at the start of the second mo to, but Wiggins twi sted th e thro ttle to no end and blasted by Gra fton 'for the lead. Wiggins went on to take th e mo to win and the overa ll Expert victory. . Natvig swept th e Intermediates with Somers going 2-2 for second l a overall. Edward Jay put his Suzuki . into overdrive to win the second moto of the Novice division, bu t Noriega's 1-2 score was good enough for the overall. J ay fimshed second overall via a 4-1 tall y. In the XR80 Invitational class, Jeff Grafton topped the field after sweeping both motos in the highly competitive .race.
