FREMO T, CA, NOV J5 ~ Curt Winter rode two flawless moLOS to take the Open Beginner win today in round two of the Baylands Raceway Park's Winter Series. · At the start of moLO one it was Gary Jaehne, a junior, with the hoJeshoL In his wake was the only other junior m the event, Aaron Hudson. These two riders set the pace for the horde of Beginners headed by Winter. Riding 'lVell in the first moto and challenging at every corner was Mark Fitzsimmbns. The second moLO start again saw Jaehne jump out to the immediate lead but Hudson was mired in mid- . paerk and could only manage a fourth place overall in the moto. Again, the easy beginner winner was Winter but this time he was followed to the checkers by David'Coates, who ended third overall' on the day behind Fitzsimmons. At the drop of the gate .in moLO one of the 125cc Beginner class, it was a 17 -rider dash LO the first corner but it was Todd Damron that got there firsL Hot on his rear wheel were Larry Moniz and Chris Sechiatano. As the moto wore on Moniz faded to sixth and Sechiatano kept up a pressure that forced Damron LO a quicker pace. Damron made no mistakes and the moLO ended with Damron in front and Sechiatano second. There was a considerable distance between second and third which was cinched by Leo Salazar. In the second moLO Damron was again away quickly and never really had to look back. Taking charge in the battle for second was Salazar. Sechiatano ran into problems in the moLO and was rele~ated LO sixth place. Running a soltd third in this moLO was Lance Bollens. McMillen were both riding but it was top local Expert Mike Spear who showed why he holds the number one plate in both classes as he took home a pair of first overalls today at Modena. Spear captured the 250cc Expertdass with a 2-1 day ,!nd swept both moLOS in the Open class. In the 250cc Expert class Coen won the opening moLO with Spear coming from a JOth place start LO finish second. But in the second moLO, Spear got of( the line right behind Dennis Decker. He passed Decker on the second lap and started to put some daylight between himself and the pack. Coen, working up from a sixth place start, moved into third by lap three. But when he went to duck under Decker in the tight righthander before the finish line, he hit Decker's rear wheel and ran into the fence. By ~e.time he got free, he was back in eighth place and Spear was running in front with a 20-second lead. Rob McCullough, meanwhile, was riding a steady race and moved into second as Coen finally worked his way back to third. Spear won the overarJ with Coen's L-3 score good for second and McCullough's 3-2 for third. Decker drifted back LO fou rth wbich gave him fourth overall. In the Open Expert class Spear grabbed the holeshot in both moLOS. In the first moLO, he got some breathing room as McMillan bad LO . work to get by Mark Costa. When he finally did get free of (:osta, Spear had a safe lead. In the second moto, though, Spear was followed off the line by McMilLan and the two ran away from the field. McMillan got alongside Spear each Lap in tbe mud hole but Spear kept his wheel in front and powered back into the lead. By the end, Spear held a one-second lead but it was all he needed to complete his double for the day. In the 125cc Expert class Coen got the overall vicLOry with a J-J afternoon with McMillen chasing him home in the first moLO. In the second moLO, McCullough converted bis great holeshot into a. second place finish with McMillen taking third. But McCullough's fifth in the first moto gave McMillen second overall. Tracey Petty finished with a perfect I-J day in the Senior Expert class and John DiDomenico a J-l in the Super Senior Experts. Arthur Swift had a perfect J-I score in the Senior Amateur class while Rich Golden did the same in the Super Senior Amateur class. In the 250cc Amateur class Mike Kelly, who won his qualifier, took third in the second moLO for the o\lerall, just beating Mario DeMarco. DeMarco won the first qualifier and finished a spot behind Kelly in the next.
