"The others don't 'seem to have the enthusiasm that MOTORCYCLIST's editors do." -Harry Maillet PHOTOS: NICK IENATSCH Name: Harry Maillet Occupation: Owner, The Performance Works Company description: "The Performance Works started about 1976. We got into racing just for fun and saw there was a street market for many of the specialty items we were using on the racing equipment. Ours is a one-stop shop: a person can get a tune-up or a complete bike built. I enjoyed racing, but for me. the real challenge was creating a marketplace for expensive toys. Some of the Bimotas we sell cost in excess of $30,000, and the people who buy them are the ones who really appreciate high-quality machinery. ' Often they have a collection of cars-Ferraris, Porsches-and are multi-bike owners. They're not looking for something that everybody else has; they want the quality and something that is unique." Projects: "Our latest was the Bi- mota SB4S, which we tore down to the bare frame tubes and recreated. I see the SB4S as The Performance Works' rolling showroom; it dis- . plays what we can do and the way we accomplish our objectives . My personal favorite of all the bikes I've built is probably my 1979 Kawasaki MK II." Riding history: "I've been into motorcycles since I was a kidI've never been able to get away from them. I owned a series of Triumphs and BSAs until the Japanese market really hit about 1973 and I got .into Kawasakis. I did a lot of club racing years ago and had my share of wins and losses. We also did some building for riders like Harry Klinzrnann and Steve McLaughlin back then and still do some minor sponsorship." Highway 33, or the Angeles Crest Highway." Magazine: "When I got into this business one of the first things I did was sort out the magazines to see who was reaching the kind of performance-oriented rider I'm after, and what it boiled down to was MOTORCYCLIST. The others don't seem to have the enthusiasm that MOTORCYCLIST's editors do." This endorsement is purely voluntary. No lee or other consideration is paid. .
