. Husqvarna rider Dave Bertram was second overall and f irst AA ri der after the addit ion error was corrected. He beat Lafferty by two points. there was nothing betw een there and th e finish, and Bennett hadn't waited for th e reset. They were off in a shot, but it was too late. Bennett finished up with . j w o points off at the last check , 'Lafferty did a five. " He came up on me go ing into 13, and I just had to let him by," La ffert y said about Bennett. " We rod e together for a while, but he was just flying. I 'cou ldn 't keep up." Bertram a nd Russell came in with a six a nd a seven , but th en co mplained that th e flip cards wer e wrong .during scoring. Wh en they checked the check clock a nd backup shee ts they were satisfied that th e error was on their part and th e protest was withdrawn. Being th e 50th Anniversa ry of th e Sa n dy L an e , th e Meteor Club incl uded a Vintage class, for bikes 15 years o ld o r o lder, a nd th ey drew som e interesting en tr ies. It was easy 10 tell that most of the Vint age class riders were old hands. because most never turned in their cards a t th e end of th e run, figuring a DNF d idn 't mean a ny thing! Jim Smith, father of Drew, wowed the crowd by sta rt ing on a Norton, and J im Hoar turned h undreds of hea ds by making it as far as check seven on a n 'a ncient H o nda CT90 step -t h ro ugh ! T h e class was' won by Mik e Slat e, o n a bea u tiful T riu mph 500 twin. Dave Tu cker emerged fro m th e l25cc B class to take th e Hi gh Po int B honors with 70 poin ts, and Kevin Sm ith came from all th e way back . on minute 85 to win Hi gh Point C with 32 points (the C rid ers were fini shed a t th e third gas sto p), The Women's class cont enders also ran a shortened course, and Kathy Campbell was first in with a 41 over the 65 of Linda Luhn. In the Super Senior class, past ECEA President John Cooper once again took th e honors, this time with a 29 points score over the 37 points posted by Joe Morel from Massachusetts. South Jersey Enduro Riders #1 Team took the team Iion ors . The cards were turn ed iri and the Newly-crowned National Champion Kevin Hines was within one point of Bennett before dropping out after 1 14 m iles w ith an ailing clutch . co mp uters turned on, and scoring took a few hours after the first riders came in. Everybody was groani ng and aching, but it was agreed tha t the 50th Sandy Lane will go down , in hi story as a real enduro. Still, just before the trophies were handed out Meteor scorekeeper Bob Henry took th e microphone and asked the crowd, " Wha t did you think of the course?" Immediately a ch ant went up " Kill Dale Freitas! Kill Dal e Freitas!" Freitas, of course, was nowhere to be found. With the smoke and steam settling out of the tig h t and wet sections of th e co urse, the Sandy La ne wound down; and with it the National and ECEA Champion ships. It was a tough year for the incumbents, and a great year for the challengers, with Laffert y being deposed by Bennett, and Bertram and Husqvarna being toppled by Hines a nd KTM. " I' m just glad it's finall y over," sa id '87 champion Hines. " It was a good year, and Dave (Bertra m) was a grea t gu y to rid e agains t. I reall y resp ect him as a 'good, fair rid er - but I'm still glad I beat him ! I had a lot of help from KTM America, from H &H KTM in Mableton, Georgi a; from Duralube, Dunlop , Malc ol m Smi th, Z Racin g a nd Ara i, and I'm reall y thankful for that . Next year may be we' ll do it again!" Unofficial Results GRAND CHAMPION : Kevin Benn ett (Yam). HIGH POINT A : All en Gravitt. HIGH POINT B: Dave Tucker. HIGH POINT C: Kevin Smi th. AA: 1.
