The American Motorcyclist Association Board of Trustees met in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on November 9, 1987. Also in attendance were AMA Co ngress Delegates Denis Petrie, Al Sumner, and Dave Grada II , AMA member Bob Dyble, and H o nda emp loyee Bru ce Mandel. The trustees reviewed year-end finan cial reports and noted that the Association had improved its deferred revenues by 6%· a nd its operating reserves by 30%. Although th e Association has experienced unexpected legal costs arising o ut of a dispute between su percross pro moters, fisca l 1987 was co mp leted close to budget and th e Asso ci ation remains in very sound financia l condition. In addition, the AMA has purchased its West erville, Ohio. headquarters, opening the way for construction of museum space for the American Motorcycle Heritage Foundation. AMA Cha irman J o h n Hasty repo rted on the strategic p lan ning project scheduled for completion early in 1988. The tru stees reviewed core co m m itt ee plannin~ in six divisio ns of AMA activity, and concluded that a top priority should be placed on planning related to professional raci ng. Association P resi dent Ed Youngblood wa s instructed to develop a plan for corpora te reorga nization aimed at: eStreamlining the decisionmaking process in professional . rules; eEstabl ishing a separate pro · racing subsid iary tha t wo u ld . benefit the com mercial marketability of professional motorcycle racing and enable the AMA to more effectively focus its attention on the government relations and image-building programs vita l to the futu re of the motorcycling community as a whole. Membership Director Mark Mederski presented a report analyzing the 1987 membership growth and o u tlining plans for 1988. He. noted that the Association has maintained an average annual growth of over 2,000 members since 1982 with a growth of nearly 3.000 members in 1987. This will remain as an area of major emphasis for 1988. The trustees studied an architectural design 'and fundi n g plan for renovation of AMA's Nationa l headquarters intended to provide space for an American Motorcycle Heri age Fou ndatio n mu seum .
