In what was th e closest a nd fiercest race o f th e day, th e ar ch rival s co ntin ued the ir yearlong struggle a nd ra n side-by-side for th e fi na l three o f five laps. Kut ch er held th e edge a nd secu red th e cha m pi onship. H ouston sett led for seco nd m class a nd second overall as Kaw asa ki rider Gil Griggs stead ily worked hi s way up through th e pack into third.
