Jones sizzles af OIR By Peggy Ad(lm ic Ro dney Farris cruised to the 250cc Pro class victory at the Timonium Short Track. a nd Cycletronics of New Bern Husky spo nsored Steve Arthur were th e riders wi th a sho t 'a t th at titl e. Arthur's titl e hopes hung on him taking the overa ll and Faddis- placing eig h th overa ll or lower. Both riders remained ca lm 'prior to th e start but with the drop of th e flag all hell brok e loose. Arthur powered into th e fir st turn with the lead with Faddis .in hot pursuit. At th e end of th e first lap, Faddis held 'the edge wit h Arthur breathing heavy down hi s back. Go ing int o th e last lap, Faddis was experienci ng difficulties' and had to divert hi s a ttent io n from trying to bea t Arthur to m akin g su re h e finished hi gh eno ugh in the overa ll for the da y. Art h ur po unced on th e opport unity a nd ra n aw ay with a th ree minute lead a t the fin ish. Wh en th e scores were posted, the closest titl e chase in th e hi stor y of th e series was decided. Arth ur was left reflectin g while Faddis wa lked away sm iling with fin ish es of thi rd a nd fourth overa ll, resp ectively. In the 250cc class Bob Gerk en , three-time Grand Champion David White and Dann y Morrison staye d in close for ma tio n th rough out th e race. While Farris go t the credit, th e credit must also be given to mechanic Mike Wh eeler , wh o prep ared th e M.J. Sponse ller -sponsored H onda. While Farri s was rega in ing th e front posi tion he has held for the last five yea rs in th e ser ies ,' Charlie Maj eski was the on ly winner from the ope ni ng ro und to repea t as he again topped the 360cc class . The sta rt of the 250cc fin al look ed almost identical to last week 's, excep t that la st week ' s winn er, L a rry Sweeten , was stuc k in a first turn traffi c jam, as Dan Reichert took th e' lead, with Ri ch Rowe, Ada m Weiss a nd Mik e Mester follo win g. As Rei ch ert smoo th ly pulled away, Sweeten was riding with a vengeance and stu ffed h is way int o a battle for . third. He th en got by Rowe for second on th e 10th lap. While he cu t Reich ert 's margin down, Sweeten ra n ou t of laps a nd Reichert took th e chec kered flag with a l O-yard margin over Sweeten. After dom in ating th e Pro class for th e last five years on a Gary Nixonspo nsored Bul taco, Farris decided to go with Mike Sponselle r' s Honda for this year's series. In its few appearances thi s past season it proved to be a rock et, but a t Timonium speed is se co n da ry . J ones chased Boyas for hal a lap before regaining th e top spa by passing Boyas in th e sa me turn and using the same stra tegy used t pass Speigle a lap ea rlier. Jones remained ou t front for th e remainde of th e mot o. Bo yas, Speigle, Hatfiel and Cain ro unded out th e top five. Mike Boggi a mounted hi s JB Ra c Products-backed Suzuki and took th overall win in the combined Ligh twei ght/Heav yweight Pro cl asses. Moto o ne was a see -sa w battl e between H onda rider David Han a nd Kawasak i Team ' Green 's Dal Spangler. Hand routed through tum o ne with St eve G ardin er a nd Spa ngler in tow. Spangler quickl y di sp en sed of Gardiner and moved in on Hand. Spangl er routed past Hand to begin lap two. Hand remained clo se as th e two rid ers began pullin away from th e pack. Boggia had m oved into third foll owed by Gre Wh eeler as Gardiner dropped t fifth. The five riders h eld th ei positions for four laps wh en Hand used all the rig h t moves a nd passe Spangler for th e lead and made th m ov e st ic k throughout th remainder of th e race. I Boggia took th e lead off the lin to start moto two with Hand and Gardiner grabbing seco nd a nd third. Honda rider Ken Frankenbery a n Spangler were side-by-side on th first lap until they flew off th downhill a n d collided midair .
